Frequent ejaculation may decrease prostate cancer risk

"Ejaculating at least 21 times a month significantly reduces a man's risk of prostate cancer," is the headline on the Mail Online. This is based on research from the US that asked men how often they ejaculated per month and subsequent reporting of prostate cancer.

They found that men who ejaculated 21 times or more a month were less likely to report  https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/prostate-cancer/" rel="nofollow - prostate cancer  at follow-up than those ejaculating four to seven times per month.

However, it does not prove that ejaculating more frequently prevents cancer, only that it is associated with a reduction in risk. It might be that a range of other factors such as genetics, lifestyle, number of children, diet, nature of sexual activity and education contribute to this risk, but we cannot say for sure what factors might increase the risk.

The researchers offer a number of hypotheses why ejaculation may help reduce prostate cancer risk, such as reducing stress or keeping cell metabolism well regulated. But these suggestions remain in the realm of speculation.

Despite any lurid tales you may have heard growing up,  https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/sexual-health/masturbation-faqs/" rel="nofollow - masturbation is entirely safe. So if you want to do it as a preventative method then it wouldn't pose any health risks.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/prostate-cancer/symptoms/" rel="nofollow - Initial signs of prostate cancer  usually involve problems with urination, such as needing to urinate more frequently, due to the prostate getting larger. While prostate enlargement can occur as men grow older, it is important to check symptoms like these with your GP.

Where did the story come from?

Determining the Fittest Sport

Some of the fittest athletes are said to come from the sports of gymnastics, tennis, cross-country skiing, surf lifesaving, triathlon, basketball, ice-hockey, handball, cycling, boxing, squash, soccer and other football codes, though you could go on and on. That does not stop us from giving these results of comparisons between sports and discussing and confusing the issue even more!

< width="640" height="160" border="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" ="0" ="0" allowtransparency="true" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen="true" id="aswift_0" name="aswift_0" style="left: 0px; : ; top: 0px; border-width: 0px; border-style: initial; width: 640px; height: 160px;">

Using direct measurement and expert analysis, the sports of boxing, skiing, squash and tennis have each been labelled as the fittest, and as you can see no one agrees. I have also a discussion about the  https://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/fittest-sport/index.htm" rel="nofollow - world's fittest sport , and an  https://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/fittest-sport/competition.htm" rel="nofollow - oline vote for the fittest sport , with the winner ironman triathlon. See also the discussion about the  https://www.topendsports.com/testing/fittest-athlete.htm" rel="nofollow - Fittest Athletes , who may not necessarily come from the fittest sports.

Direct Measurement

One way to determine which sport is the fittest would be to directly test a group of athletes from different sports on a range of fitness tests, and then rank them on the performances in the tests.

Alpine Skiing wins the Canadian Experiment

In October 2003 a large group of more than 1000 amateur provincial Canadian athletes competed in a series of fitness tests at the Toronto Sky Dome. The athletes were aged between the ages of 6 and 19, representing 16 sports (Alpine Skiing, Archery, Basketball, Bowling, Boxing, Cycling, Fencing, Gymnastics, Lacrosse, OFSAA School Sports, Rowing, Snowboarding, Swimming, Synchronized Swimming, Tennis and Track and Field). The aim of the day was to crown the "Fittest Sport in Ontario," while also promoting physical fitness for Canadian youth. The athletes completed 13 tests to determine their overall fitness level, and the winner of the title "Fittest Sport in Ontario" at the end of the day was Alpine Skiing. This was no fluke - they won the award the following year too. In the table below are some of the tests that were used to determine the fittest sport! As the tests cover the full range of fitness components, the competition was aimed at finding the sport that had the best overall fitness. Individual athletes and sports may stand out in specific tests, but they needed to be good at most of them. There is no doubt that skiing is a very demanding sport. I can imagine that they performed very well on tests of upper body strength, power, agility, lactic and strength endurance.

Fitness ComponentTest

Expert Analysis

Getting a group of elite athletes from a large range of sports to undertake a series of standardized test would be practically impossible. The alternative is to get experts in sports science, physiologists, trainers and coaches, to rate how they think the athletes would perform in the tests and determine the fittest sports that way. A few groups have tried this approach.

stopwatchBoxing tops the ESPN List

ESPN decided to determine which sport is the most demanding. First it identified ten skills that go into athleticism, then asked a group of experts to assign a number from 1 to 10 to each of these skills (see more details and the  https://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/fittest-sport/espn.htm" rel="nofollow - ESPN full list ). This analysis was applied to 60 sports, and the sport of Boxing was determined to be the most demanding. Here is their list of the top ten most demanding sports: Boxing, Ice Hockey, Football (Gridiron), Basketball, Wrestling, Martial Arts, Tennis, Gymnastics, Baseball, Soccer.

Forbes thinks Squash

According to Forbes Magazine, squash is the healthiest sport an individual can undertake. Forbes consulted with fitness experts and asked them to score a selection of sports in four areas - cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility, and also incorporated scoring on calories burned and injury risk. The winner was the sport of squash - out of a possible five points, squash scored 4.5 for cardiorespiratory endurance, 3 for muscular strength, 5 for muscular endurance, 3 for flexibility, 5 for calories burned in 30 minutes, and 2 for injury risk (total 22.5). Rowing and rock climbing tied for second with 22 points each, with swimming, cross-country skiing and basketball not far behind. See more about the  https://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/fittest-sport/healthiest-forbes.htm" rel="nofollow - healthiest sport list .

tennis playerPete Sampras Says Tennis

In a statement made in 2009 sure to spark debate among the sporting stars and followers, Tennis ace Pete Sampras claimed that Tennis players are the best athletes in the whole wide world. It is all personal opinion of course.

"I think tennis players are the best athletes, in my opinion. I'm not being biased. I know what it takes, I know hand-eye coordination. In an individual sport, you can't hide." Sampras said. He may well be biased, but with his record his opinion is worthy of respect. "People don't talk about it. I mean, in tennis, these athletes are incredible, ... what these guys do on the run ... the guys that aren't maybe playing well and they come back - they're down two sets to love and they have the resolve to come back and can go on and on".

Conclusion

When comparing sports or athletes to find the fittest, the most important thing is to first define what is fitness, before trying to measure it. It will be hard to find anyone to agree on any of the above sports being the fittest, so this debate will always continue. What sport do I think is the fittest? I don't think it has definitively been answered - I'll have to come up with the ultimate test and find some willing athletes ...

Tennis over squash

Posted By: Whale
Date Posted: 23 Jul 2019 at 2:18pm
I think it depends on the level of squash. I remember games where my opponent lay on the floor totally exhausted during the game, the reason being the low standard  our inability to hit a winning shot, therefore interminable rallies

I ventured into a university sports facility the other day. Some old blokes , stagnant, spooning the ball back to each other
Hardly what I’d call exertion. The corresponding squash courts painted a very different picture

Totally incorrect, it is harder to keep a ball in play in tennis, poor players hit the ball into the net, out of court ,don't reach it. As a matter of fact the better the standard the longer the rallies, especially since serve and volley is out of style

Suspect there it is not quite that simple and you get to a level of play after which any improvement makes for shorter rallys. Most common length of rally on the pro tour is 1.

fair enough,Djoker must be an exception as are Nadal, Federer  Smile
I have played both tennis and squash at a low level, squash was far more taxing aerobically, no comparison, often ran till exhaustion.
I guess the study I posted focussed on elite athletes

Not many sports are easy at advanced level when measured by the endurance required.      No surprise to hear Whale suggest Squash as being very exhausting ,   I've never played it but have witnessed physical wrecks coming off hard games.
Boxing, Rowing , Bicycle racing, are just a few that leave you stuffed.

Most can be Played if not so fit, as the only penalty is fatigue & defeat.

The one I can assure you , Where superb fitness is a MUST, or there is a terrible price to pay , is Boxing.     Probably the hardest of them all for that reason .
The only place on earth where an hour equals 3 minutes , is in a Boxing ring.

How Fast You Walk May Predict How Long You'll Live

Can't believe how slowly people walk, my casual speed is 4 mph, faster on a long walk

The walking speed for those with the average life expectancy was about 0.8 meters per second (about 1.8 mph) for most age groups of both sexes. Walking speed was a more accurate predictor of life expectancy than age or sex, the study showed.

Why Men Who Can Do 40 Pushups May Have Better Heart Health

The ability to do a lot of pushups may be a sign not only of strength, but also of good heart health, a new study suggests.

The study tested the stamina of middle-aged male firefighters. It found that those who could do more than 40 pushups in a row had a 96 percent lower risk of being diagnosed with https://www.livescience.com/34733-heart-disease-high-cholesterol-heart-surgery.html" rel="nofollow - heart disease or experiencing other heart problems over a 10-year period, as compared with those men who could do fewer than 10 push ups.

However, because the study looked at only male firefighters, who have very active jobs, it's unclear if the findings apply to average Joes. [ https://www.livescience.com/60718-new-ways-to-keep-heart-healthy.html" rel="nofollow - 9 New Ways to Keep Your Heart Healthy ]

But the findings suggest that "pushup capacity could be an easy, no-cost method to help assess cardiovascular disease risk," study lead author Justin Yang, an occupational medicine resident at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2019-02/htcs-pcl021219.php" rel="nofollow - said in a statement .

The study was published Feb. 15 in the journal https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2724778" rel="nofollow - JAMA Network Open .

There is also another  test of longevity and chances of dementia. The length of time you can stand with one leg off the floor, eyes shut. On that measure I will be gaga in 23 days and dead in 38.

I am amazed at the reaction to what I consider standard physical activities, especially the walking. I am guessing there would not have been that reaction 50 years ago.

It  shows the appalling lack of fitness in our pampered modern existence

BTW ...   Anyone see the superb effort of the lady who went all the way on the Ninja show last night ...   SUPERB , I couldn't believe it.

I didn't think any lady could defeat most men in such a grueling event ..
Nothing special about her outward , visual strength .     More a stylish feminine type ,   BUT her strength & endurance , blew me away.

Diverticulosis.
I recently found out a relative suffers from this (severely) and didn't realise it was so common.
Western diet induced, I would recommend Millet as a fibre alternative.
But do your own research, as many of us over 50 probably have it.

Seen her before.  Its obscene.,  No human is meant to be like that.  WHY would you do that Confused
I was always a fast walker, and walk for miles non stop.   Especially sight seeing in UK.   Only way to see the real UK was to walk around the back blocks.    And if I wasnt walking I was riding.   I do think any sort of physical exercise helps you to age a bit better/slower.

We didn't have a car so always walked everywhere.  At high school I hated waiting for the bus and used to walk fast to try to beat it.  Sometime I did.  So far as running was concerned - last every race I was hopelessly slow.  Then after the children I've found I slowed down.  Whether to walk with them or what I don't know but I've never got that speed back and now ever 7k sees me out with blisters and hip aching.  Old age sucks and I'm not even into it yet. Only just 60.
