I was looking at the program for Victoria Derby Day and I noticed something interesting.

The 2500m race which the winner earns an automatic entry into the Melbourne Cup....since 2009 it has been known as the Lexus Stakes and before that the Saab Quality and before that many other names.

The race name has reverted back to its original registered name this year which is the Hotham Handicap, which I think is great

For those interested in this info.

Cheers.

The Empire Rose Stakes has also reverted to its original name, no doubt it is just that they're yet to find sponsors for either race.

I would say that they haven’t updated the sponsors.

the sponsors names should always just be added to the race name.  The way they switch the names around can course alot of confusion.  One stallion got a G1 put next to his name when a race sponsor switched from a G2 to a G1 race and the wrong race was credited to him at stud.

1979–1993 - The Dalgety
1994–1995 - Crown Quality
1996 - Ten News Stakes
1997 - Lean Cuisine Quality
1998–2008 - Saab Quality
2009 onwards - Lexus Stakes

The Hotham will always be remembered for the triple dead heat.

The new HOTHAM is being run today. race 5 at Ballarat

And what a finish at Ballarat !

They were all trying their best not to win but Nathan Hobson's Henry's Affair did not try nearly hard enough and ended up winning the $30000.00 first prize.

It was a coup for Hobson who finished last in last years race with Srathern.

Helen Burn's 6YO It's Got Lip finished 27 lengths last.  Expect improvement at its next start,

The time for the race 1.12.3 for the 1200m, 3.7 seconds outside the course record.

Wouldn't that throw a spanner in the works for the MC these days.

Looks like the race this year will be known as the Hotham Handicap. I checked the Racing Australia websitr and it had "Hotham Handicap"so looks like there is no sponsor for the race as has been in previous years

From what I’ve been told, it will have a sponsors name when acceptances come out on Wednesday

Aren't Lexus the sponsor for the cup from this year?

VRC leaving it a little late re: trying to find a sponsor for a race? Normally all of that ground work is done by now

I believe the deal was done a while ago, but hasn’t been made public yet.
Seems odd though.
I’m only going off what I’ve read on another page though.

Love the Lexus, always a fantastic race with the ‘last ditch effort’ to make the field
