Avilius now down to $8 in most markets.
Still value in my opinion.
I think Kings will Dream is way under the odds. More dour type. Avilius can sustain a long sprint.

I see Tosen Basil has drifted to $51 for the CC after his poor run in the MD on Sat. Can he improve enough in the next 5 weeks to win? On best form he would be a huge winning chance.

As far as I know (third hand via a connection) MC still very much on the agenda for TB, wouldn’t say it was a poor run but they did want to see him hit the line a bit better - that said it was fairly fast run and he had the fastest 800-400 split (think it was that).

He is one of the horses who made me think that the middle of the straight was not the place to be.
Kementari and Kings Will Dream, sprinted quickly and looked as though they would push Grunt, but their run came to and end quickly, and to many horses performed like that for it to be a fitness issue.
I still think you needed to be inside three of the fence and forward to have a winning hope.

Hi guys: Quick question if you win the Caulfield cup.is that then like a ballot exempt.race into the Melbourne cup?.
|
Posted By: VOYAGER
Date Posted: 04 Oct 2018 at 5:37pm
No.
That is why horses who win the Caulfield cup, need a weight penalty, to move up the order.
Having said that, I can not remember a Caulfield cup winner who has paid up for the cup, that has not made the field.

I think Voyager you will find the first 4 across the line are exempt from ballot.
Any horse that already has more than 56 kgs will not be penalised.
This is off the top of my head and am happy to be corrected.

BALLOTING CONDITIONS
(1) The Directors may in their absolute discretion exclude any horse or horses from the race, whether the safety limit of 24 horses at final acceptance time shall be reached or not, and if such exclusion occurs, and more than 24 final acceptors remain, balloting of surplus horses will continue in the normal manner to its conclusion.
The winner of the following, if any should be a nomination and a first, second and final acceptor for the 2018 Lexus Melbourne Cup, shall be exempt from any ballot on this race:
- 2018 VRC Bart Cummings - 2018 VRC Hotham Handicap - 2018 MVRC Cox Plate - 2018 MRC Caulfield Cup
(2) Subject always to the Directors' absolute discretion, as stated, remaining final acceptors in excess of the safety limit of 24 horses shall be eliminated in the following order, until the safety limit is reached:
Horses OTHER THAN those that have registered a “Relevant Race Performance”, as set out below:
Relevant Race Performances
A) since 1 February 2017 inclusive, won or was placed 2nd or 3rd in an internationally recognised Group or Graded flat race run over 2300 metres or further; OR won or was placed 2nd or 3rd in the Queensland Derby, Queensland Oaks or Brisbane Cup OR
B) since 1 February 2017 inclusive, was placed 4th or 5th in an internationally recognised Group 1 or Grade 1 flat race run over 2300 metres or further in which horses older than 3 years old could run, OR
C) since 1 February 2017 inclusive, won an internationally recognised Listed flat race run over 2300 metres or further, OR
D) since 1 February 2017 inclusive, won or was placed 2nd or 3rd in the York Ebor (UK) or Champions & Chater Cup (HK), OR
E) since 1 February 2017 inclusive, won the Northumberland Plate (UK), Cesarewitch (UK), or Queen Mother Memorial Cup (HK), OR
F) was placed 6th, 7th or 8th in the 2018 MRC Caulfield Cup, OR
G) was placed 2nd or 3rd in the 2018 MVRC Cox Plate, OR
H) won the 2018 VRC Seppelt Turnbull Stakes, OR
I) won or was placed 2nd or 3rd in the 2016 Melbourne Cup, OR
J) won the 2016 Caulfield Cup
Should the number of such horses exceed the number of horses required to be eliminated from the race, then such elimination shall be effected by order of the lowest appended weight figure against the benchmark weight for individual horses, as the case may be.
Horses in this clause (2) with the same lowest appended weight figure against the benchmark weight for individual horses, as the case may be, shall be eliminated at the discretion of the Directors.
(3) If, after Balloting Clause (2) has been exhausted, excess horses remain, then subject to the exercise of the Directors’ discretion, elimination of such horses shall be effected by order of the lowest appended weight figure against the benchmark weight for individual horses, as the case may be.
Horses in this clause (3) with the same lowest appended weight figure against the benchmark weight for individual horses, as the case may be, shall be eliminated in order of lowest aggregate prizemoney received in “Relevant Race Performances” since 1 February 2016 inclusive. Horses equal in both of these respects shall be eliminated at the discretion of the Directors.

What does it mean ?
Well, if Winx was nominated and paid up she wouldn't get a run unless she won the Turnbull on Saturday or the Cox Plate (the point is moot as she will probably win both.)
Curiously the directors claim the absolute power to exclude any horse/s but not to include them. You must qualify by the ballot or you cannot race. Them the rules.

Youngstar impressive but took a while to stoke up. Distance will suit but I think she may be better at Flemington. Also not much between the placegetters there- horses like Ventura Storm and TFF. Warming to Homesman after today.
Might be seeing two rare birds here- a Williams horse they actually want to win a CC with, and with Youngstar an Aussie horse that might be competitive in the big one.

It is rare but:

2009: Shocking ran 2nd in the QLD Derby (beatem by 0.4 lengths) and went on to win the Cup later that year

Winx aside, Youngstar was pulling away from that field on the line. I see nothing behind her beating her in a Caulfield Cup. She will get better as the distances get longer. The 2400m will be more suited in the CC. It will take a special horse to beat her, as it did on the weekend.

Kings Will Dream put an extra K on his back to 53 on Saturday. How do they beat him with the 5K drop in the weights . Keep in mind his sensational time to win over 2400m ( 2.28.67 )on a slow track in Mornington Cup. 5L The Turnbull had several great runs against the sectionals Saturday. Winx was bluddy lucky to get out in time. The Youngstar run was Cups material too.
Placed to WINX is the best form you can get ( especially for the big R'dwick miles aye.)

I don't make a lot of his run. I think it was a solid run, but he was fading going to the line. Youngstar was actually pulling away from that field on the line. We saw a horse step up and try go with Winx when challenged. It was a gallant effort by Youngstar. She is very tough. I think she wins the Caulfield Cup fairly well. She will be suited over 2400m and further. Very special horse and is being overlooked right now because of how great a performance Winx was.

You need to stop looking at it like fading and more like not having the top speed they had. The horses were running the quickest sectionals of the race at the end. It will be completely different in a race like the Caulfield Cup with some modicum of pressure.

Given the sectionals , the first two's runs were sensational. I erred early , Kings Will Dream drops 3.5K.
Great example of how horses need to get the breaks .
Only the greatest middle distance galloper of my time , could have won that Race from where she was , inside the 800m.

So now with the final decision to not run Yucatan. What are everyone's thoughts on the race? I've been a big supporter of KWD for a long while and see no reason to jump off. Youngstar the obvious danger but reasonably confident KWD can turn the tables.

I'm with you Cupper!... KWD from Youngstar ... Cliffs of Moher did enough to be considerred and the Japanese horses always attract my attention - Chestnut Coat will be in my exotics. The rest are a dartboard job of chances really ... wont leave any Waller or Weir runners out either!

KWD has only been marking time his last three runs. He hasn't gone forward since his first up run. However I think Weir has just been keeping him ticking over. Expect him to go to another level in the main target race.

I like him a lot, very honest, a winner too, has come back well, def in the mix, but the other two just seems too well weighted ... barrier draw could change things too.

I like Youngstar. Her QLD Derby run had CC/MC written all over it. She improved every run last prep and improved as distances increased. Her last run behind Winx, where she went with the champion near the line is being massively underrated. The market hasn't underrated her though. I think she wins. She may even win very easily.

Was Fawkner already holding a MC slot the year he won the CC? But in general you are right, he generally uses this to get them in for Flemington like he did with Green Moon the year he ran 2nd in it.

Is this the same Youngstar that raced past KWD last start? KWD looks to be too have come back more as a 2000m horse than a 2400m horse.
Anyway this is how I see it. Youngstar and KWD are the 2 best weighted imo. But if Jaameh gets a run then he could well blow them all away.
Most of the internationals have to carry more weight than the Aussie horses, and are very capable. But they are used to carrying 60kgs against others with 60kgs.
Best Solution gets top weight 57.5kgs with Sound Check and Duretto both weighted to beat him on their last meetings. Duretto especially.
Homesman is the best of Lloyds horses. Melham riding and his Caul Stakes run was merely a pipe opener.
Youngstar to win. Light weight ,top jockey and peaking for this after her 2nd to Winx. KWD, Homesman, Duretto next in no particular order.
Jaameh if he gets a run.

Im starting to change my mind for the Caulfield Cup.
I had The Cliffsofmoher on top.
Something bothers me about the race this year. I think the swoopers are going to be too far back.
I keep watching the replay of the 2018 AJC Derby. Ace High is so bloody tough. He and Levendi streeted the field, and Ace High looked like he could do another lap.
If Ace High corners anywhere near the lead in the Caulfield Cup, lets say 3 lengths from the lead, you can just see him chiming in at the 400m, lengthening, and getting a gap from the field and being too hard to run down. Those coming from the back, are going to have to run a very very serous race to catch Ace High at the 100m
Somewhere within the final furlong, Ace High is going to look the winner. In fact, I simply dont think they will catch him. He will be the winner.
At around $13, plus odds boosting, maybe $15/$16, he is the value bet. You just know he is going to keep going.

Agree with this. I think that was a strong race last week and that was a perfect trial coming out of it. Seen enough internationals over the years put in an eye catcher like that first up in Australia before winning (or at least running very well) at their next.

A gentle word of warning too. Dont be so fast to rule a line through outsiders in the Caulfield Cup.
Just some off the top of my head.
1996; ARCTIC SCENT $60
1998 TAUFAN'S MELODY $80. LISA'S GAME ran 2nd at $80
2008: ALL THE GOOD: $40 NOM DU JEU ran 2nd at $40
2009: VIEWED $40
2010: DESCARADO $40. HARRIS TWEED ran 2nd at $40.
2017: BOOM TIME $100
and in between those years, others paid upward of $8, many of them $15 and $20 Dunaden paid well too, as did Railings and Admire Rakti. I think Fawkner was big odds too??
The shorter ones were Sky Heights at $5, Mongolian Khan at $5. Mummify at $5. Northerly at $4
Ethereal was around $8, although $10 was available at the track that day.
So the race is more than capable of producing $15 plus winners, and even large quinellas have been achieved.
So if you glance at a horse paying over $40, dont be too quick to rule it out.
Now having said that, the top 4 in market will run the box first 4. LOL.

Jaameh has shown he needs a fast speed, tick. He got nosed out by a horse who would have started fav here. He is a dead set 2400+ horse. He is placed well here (the race suits, if it was Flemington he would be about $16 to $21. If he gets the run, and draws well, yes he could finish top four and if you are a top four hope you only need others to have bad luck to win.

Jaameh - does this horse fit the profile of Shocking and Brew? These horses won the Hotham Handicap (Saab Quality/Lexis Stakes) on Derby day and got into the Melbourne Cup field and carried light weights to win (Brew: 49kg and Shocking: 51kg)
He has 50kg in both Cups...probably wont get a run in the Caulfield Cup but Melbourne Cup could get a start...may need to wina race and the Hotham Handicap could be the one.

I bloody hope JAAMEH gets a run. Still spewing about that bloody protest and how quickly it was dismissed
I'm always wary of anything Cosgrave is riding.. even from barrier 17 he could win this with one of his peaches. I'll be taking a few bets into BEST SOLUTION. SOUND CHECK should run a ripper. I'm more keen for SC in the Melbourne Cup as 2400 is too short. He's a ripping stayer imo.
I think VENTURA STORM is the best roughie in the race. Has been building very nicely this prep.
DURETTO's another I could see winning this, especially drawing the pole. Will need luck of course but the horse does like to be cuddled up and inside of runners from a few races I've seen. Definitely having something on at 20-1.
Then there's the locals, IMO KINGS WILL DREAM wont run top 5. 1 run too many imo. on the other hand, ACE HIGH looks like he's dead set primed 100% for his grand final. I'm pretty keen to back him too. The is fine, excellent jockey on and he hasn't had to run in the slop in NSW, which I think is a massive plus.
Great race to have a bet on a few and come out on top. Am hoping JAAMEH gets in, otherwise I'm already on and keen to back; ACE HIGH BEST SOLUTION SOUND CHECK VENTURA STORM

KWD should get a good run from his barrier. Maybe around 6th on rails or one off. I've looked at Weir's horses in Cup races (including country Cups) over the years and when they've been set specifically for a Cup they normally find around 3 lengths. I expect he will be heavily backed for the race and start a clear favourite. He's been ticking over very nicely and with that 3 lengths I think he'll find I'm pretty confident he will win.

I think Kings Will Dream and Youngster are way unders.
I can understand Youngstar, at such a lightweight, and went with Winx for a little bit.

Ace High is going to be super hard to catch at the 200m. Just think he will keep going. and break their hearts.

Very interesting horse Ace High. Lazy bugger at trackwork. When revved up in a race, you just see him say, "okay, Ive got this", and you just get the feeling he wants more and more revving, almost like as though the longer he is revved, the more he will eventually give.
Kind of like a Northerly. Just doesnt want to be in it, but when decides to, there is plenty in the tank.
Ace High has plenty in the tank.

Gotta agree with the Williams on KWD. I just don't understand it... He doesn't ride for Weir. It's Yendall, Rawiller, Allen or Lane. I thought it was a very tough run he gave KWD last start. I watched the horse pretty closely and am in the opinion that it should be in the paddock. That last run seemed to take a lot out of him.
But I suppose if anyone can get the horse to peak again it's Weiry. I just don't think KWD will run top 5. Massive lay.

I have COM on top of the ratings, so for me he is going to beat RV home.
The reason is that I have watched RV's last three runs, and he loomed up to win, but he just faltered late.
His form is fantastic, but I think he is about 12 months off being a fully matured galloper, and for me he will run well but can not win.
I might be wrong, but that is why it is called gambling.
I also think he will be better for the run here in Australia and be better suited at Flemington over the 3200m.
The CliffsofMoher can not run 3200m, so I think this is the race he has been set for, he has proven he has settled in, even though he has not won at 2400m, his form has been in high quality 2400m races, where as RV's 2400 form includes wins at a lower level early in his career.
I just think RV will be better suited at Flemington, and that he is 12 months off being a consistent winner at this level.
If people like him I am not going to say do not back him, but he is one I am taking on.

RV and it's simply 2 reasons why -
Lloyd doesn't care about winning CC but the major reason RV will be in blinkers. They have held off using them all prep back home till Saturday. This is RVs GF.

I have read the many posts on the various forums and no one has really touched on the rail being out 6m for the Caulfield meet, last time it was out 6m it had a huge bias for on speed runners, CC is a race for well handicapped horses and those who had Yucatan as a moral then you could easily pick Gallic Chieftain making good ground into 4th finished a race strongly enjoys the back up gets a luxury weight and draws 2 which i an guessing maybe 4 pairs back the rail which is about as far back as i would want to be with the rail out 6metres with the bias. Good luck all with your selections
