If this colt goes on to win the VRC Derby......don’t steal my kudos Djebel
Posted something in the ‘bred to stay’ thread on him earlier today. Great pedigree.
But on a serious note he did round them up nicely today. Here’s hoping he works his way through the grades, not overtaxed & lines up in the 2500m Classic

I posted a tweet discreetly bagging the placement of the horse, thinking the race was over 1200m, And I have never been a fan of the surface.
I look at the result and see he won and was heart broken. Than I watched the replay and was quite impressed.

what is going on with this king? Saw he was nommed MV last week but didn't accept, can't see noms for this week. I've dropped between 20 and 50K on him for the Derby, I need to know if I should start to book the catering for the celebrations or whether I have been led astray by a false idol.

He’s entered for the trials at Cranbourne on Monday. So hopefully that means he’s still on track for a VRC Derby campaign.

Entries have not been taken for the Derby.
The only way he will be in markets is if you ask your bookie to put him in.
And we all know they throw them in well unders when you do that.

He wouldn't have qualified for HK after that win alone. If he runs top 3 on the weekend then expect some offers to come rolling in.

Are you sure ?
What are the qualifying conditions ?
I know they take unraced horses and I am sure I have seen once raced horses.

He must stay here race here as a 3yo.
If he's a gelding then take the HK offers next year as their Derbies are for Southern Hemisphere 4yo's

Entries don’t need to have been taken. There are markets up but he’s not in them as far as I can tell so just must not be on the radar enough yet. Which is a shame because I would probably have a speculator on him.

Not sure if you read my whole post.
I know when I ask a bookie to add a horse it is nearly always at some shorter quote than I'd expected.

Yes I read it and replied appropriately.

The rules have recently changed where a raced horse needs to receive a HK70 rating at least to qualify. This is at the discretion of the HK handicappers and sometimes to the frustration of myself lol. We recently had Traminer qualify for a 70 rating after one start one win but also had a UK horse knocked back with a record of 5 starts: 1 win, 2 placings.
The old rule was win a race worth at least $17k or something like that and you qualify. New rule was bought in to increase the quality of the raced horses entering HK but all I've noticed is they now cost more money lol.

Unfortunate to miss out on a run in the Derby Trial but a horse that has run 12th, 2nd last and last at it's past 3 starts and isn't even nom'd for the Derby gets the top weight all because of a Tassie Listed win over 1200m.

Colt had a setback. They'll be pushing it for him to be seasoned enough for a 2500m race in 4 1/2 weeks time.

The slight set-back was about two weeks ago, and they're into catch up for the Derby.
That said is well and truly up for the race over 1600m or so at Benalla.

It is an interesting one. If he goes home and eats up and has taken no harm from the run he should push on, maybe something a little below Derby standard.
What is there for 3yos over 2400m just below Derby standard around that time ?

I thought it was a nice enough effort from a Derby perspective. He's not bred to be doing much over 1600m or less and given his size a bigger track would seem a big plus.

He is nominated for a Class 1 over 1600m at Ballarat on Wednesday, although that was probably just a safeguard in case he didn’t run at Benalla.
If he’s come out of the Friday’s run ok, there’s plenty of options open to connections over the next month or so.
The Hill Smith Stakes over 1800m at Morphettville would be a perfect test of whether it’s worthwhile to keep going the VRC Derby path or just pick out some BM races.

I don’t see why he wouldn’t get a run. He was rated 62 before today. Will be several points higher now. The lowest rated horse in the capacity field last year was rated 58.

it is fair to say we have stumbled across the new king here, forget waller being scared to race TAS against winx in the cox plate, what truly keeps him up at night is what Alessandro would do to TAS in the derby.

Who above him currently won’t go to the Derby? Surely several will drop out after yesterday and then again after the Vase on Saturday?

This appears to be an example of what frequently irritates me about balloting.
Alessandro is rated higher than two who've made the field, and on face value he appears to have missed out because the other two have won more prizemoney. Surely rating should the prime determinant?
|
Posted By: Speediskey
Date Posted: 30 Oct 2018 at 12:57pm
Why? Rating is up to the discretion of someone that can be bias or wrong and makes it unclear what trainers need to do in order to get into a field. Prizemoney is black and white, completely fair as everyone knows exactly where they and the competition are at.
|
Posted By: Second Chance
Date Posted: 30 Oct 2018 at 1:06pm
It doesn't make any difference whether ratings are right or wrong. They're just as crystal clear as is prizemoney, and for that reason trainers similarly are in a position to determine what they need to do in order to make it into a field.
Win or run a good race to increase prizemoney, or win or run a good race to lift rating, there's no difference in the purpose and intent. And that's why class should ultimately prevail before prizemoney imo.
But over to others.
|
Posted By: Progold
Date Posted: 30 Oct 2018 at 1:28pm
Prizemoney includes bonus payments like Vobis etc, so they are hardly a reliable figure any more.
On the other hand, trainers are paid good money to care for their horses and to program races. The failure to make the field is clearly the responsibility of the trainer rather than the system.
All of the horses above him came through city races or the Geelong Classic, the traditional lead-up for the Derby, so it is probably hard to make a case that whatever rating is obtained in a BM64 at Cranbourne or Benalla is sufficient to gain a start.
|
Posted By: djebel
Date Posted: 30 Oct 2018 at 6:45pm
I am disappointed he has not made the field but I have no issue with the trainer not running in the Geelong Classic.
It's an interesting conundrum he runs at Geelong he is probably over the top for the Derby, he doesn't run at Geelong he is not in the race at all.
Hopefully he gets to the ATC Derby.

That's a shame missing out by having $1110 less prizemoney than the the 18th horse. Oh well, the trainer/manager could've place him better to guarantee a start.
Some of the horses in the Derby field would get beat by 20L, real shame.
Why couldn't VRC start with all 20 runners? Melb Cup has 24

Given the way the Derby was run to suit, he really missed a big chance he may not get again. Sure there are other races later in the season but it only gets harder from here. He'd have to travel for the ATC Derby which means Sydney colts at home plus it gets supplemented by NZ horses. Then when he turns four he has to face hordes of Euros/imports in any decent staying race. If I had a half decent staying 3yo I'd throw it in whatever needed to get a run in the Derby because it's the best chance most of them will ever get to win a million dollar race.

I tend to agree Carrot but perhaps his scratching today and his very light campaign indicates there may be other impediments ?
I don't know, but I am not sure Griffiths would have been content with $28,000 in the bank to get a Derby run if he had a viable alternative. Reading between the lines it seems they ran out of time to get the horse right for the Derby. He looked a run behind where he needed to be.
Today's race looked very winnable. There must be an issue.

Yes it seems could be he wasn't quite ready anyway. What I meant more though was no backup plan after the Geelong Classic. A top 8 finish there would have gotten him into the Derby. But if he had to be scratched there then even a placing in any country race 2000m+ would have been sufficient. As it is he's now missed what was likely his best chance at a race worth that much. Future staying contests won't only be full of local horses, half of whom will probably never run past 2000m again.

There are plenty of races for him.
I am kind of glad he missed that slugfest and was not raced into the ground to get into the race.
Hopefully whatever caused his scratching today is not too big an issue.

There are "plenty of races", the thing is how many $2 million dollar races is he likely to be a realistic chance in over his career? Unlike in decades past, once they hit 4 it's basically game over as they run into a heap of imported and European horses. See former useful 3yo Sir Charles Road as an example, 7th in the Cup on Tuesday at 100-1 that would have been a 2nd to Youngstar in a pre import era. Even the Sydney Cup is a risk to attract overseas raiders at times, albeit they avoided it last season-SCR probably doesn't run 3rd in that vs decent European stayers. For that type of horse Alessandro seems to be the Victoria Derby is about as good as it gets-locals only and many non stayers.

ATC Derby, SAJC Derby, WATC Derby, QTC Derby and Rosehill Guineas would appear five alternative targets at 3.

1stly the good news he only had a snotty nose.
The bad news, he will be aimed at the VRC St Leger and South Australian Derby.

Sounds like a sensible program to me.

Is he going to spell now or will he be racing on over summer?

Surprised they are not thinking ATC Derby.
Wins in the above 2 races will see him needing to race in everything as a spring 4yo to get into the Cups.

Spelling.
Which is another thing these European racehorses do not do.
