How good is this filly? Won impressively on debut by 5 and is odds on to repeat the dose in race 3 at Canterbury tomorrow.

She could be very good if times mean anything. Her sectionals on a hvy, 33 and change, were phenomenal. By comparison her sectionals were WAY faster than anything else on the day she blitzed them and her overall time and sectionals were also significantly faster than the speedy older horses Puppet Master/All Carisma on a slow last Sat. Looks to have good size about her in the replay.
Only neg is that the rail is back in the true tomorrow which might give leaders an advantage tomorrow?

Red - her two siblings have done nothing (one unraced), hence the cheap price (possibly). Perhaps they both had problems and Goree ran out of patience? She actually beat Red Tracer in one of her wins. Bet they are ruing selling her now.
Yes she's a mudlark but she doesn't need to sprint much faster on good going to be competitive at higher levels (see her Newcastle sectionals). Yesterday her times were better than all other races. Pretty decent effort for an inexperienced 2YO who was allowed to coast home.
Breeding buffs - what does her ancestry say about her possible distance limits?
|
Posted By: djebel
Date Posted: 28 Jun 2018 at 2:16pm
Her pedigree suggest 1200-1400 wet tracker who might get 2000m on a lest testing surface.
Native Partner is the dam of a colt who started favourite in the 1987 English Derby, Ajdal who failed in that race and less than 2 months later won the July Cup 1200m.

They're aiming high. From RNSW website:
Talented filly Smart Melody is likely to tackle at least the early part of the Princess Series as an early three-year-old. Unbeaten from only two starts and very impressive on both occasions – the latest at Canterbury on Wednesday over 1100m in midweek company – the Smart Missile youngster has concluded her current preparation. “Because the spring isn’t too far away, she will have a break of only 10 days out at our Ellalong Farm,” Lees said. “I’m not sure at this stage what distance she will handle, but we will look at the first couple of races of the Princess Series against her own sex and take it from there.” Exciting prospect Smart Melody (Brenton Avdulla) coasts in at Canterbury Park. Image by http://bradleyphotos.com.au/" rel="nofollow - Those are the $200,000 Silver Shadow Stakes and $200,000 Furious Stakes. Both are Group 2 1200m events to be run at Royal Randwick on August 18 and September 1 respectively. The remaining legs of the Princess Series also are scheduled for Royal Randwick; the $200,000 Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and $500,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) on September 15 and 29. To date, only Angst (1993) and Lees’s former champ Samantha Miss (2008) have won all four legs of the series, though a number of fillies have won three legs. And the format has been changed in recent years since its inception in 1989. It was previously staged at 1200m (Silver Shadow), 1400m (Furious), 1500m (Tea Rose) and 1600m (Flight). Understandably, Lees is looking forward to testing Smart Melody in stronger company whilst at the same time pointing out it would be silly to start getting too carried away yet. “She has been able to gallop right from the start, but I’d be lying if I said I thought she would do what she has already,” he said.

Yes. Only small neg is Kmac will want to make sure he doesn't get snookered early from the ace. Fast beginner Americana Magic is drawn outside and Ridicule is no bunny.
Shumookh first up over 1350m is interesting. Wyong suits but thought she'd resume over a shorter distance.

Exactly. Hopefully she jumps clean from the barrier and it’ll be a sit and steer job from the front.

Nice that the leader left the gap inside so Jmac could push through. Didn't see previous races but I gather the inside was not the place to be? She's built like a 4yo this lady and obviously has ability to match the looks even allowing for the class and track today.

Confirmed she'll take her place in the Thousands Guineas. $3 in the all in market.
She's a brilliant filly but the mile is a bridge too far in my opinion.
Good luck to the owners and the trainer. I can see why they want to go there but she won't be winning.

Deep down Lees knows she won't get the mile. Listen to all his interviews. Especially the post race interview today.
She'll be in it for a long way but with 100 to go she'll be swamped.
I just can't see her finding another gear.

Agree. With a half decent run I think Thrillster beats her here. This is a very talented filly who does not look like she wants a mile.

Went quite a bit faster and quicker sectional than the boys and the 1st 2 races of older horses so would not write her off.
If she can get a sit just of the leaders and they don't go hard she will explode. All comes down to how much pace is involved.

I'm inclined to agree about the concern of the 1600. She reminds me of another horse the might have been danglissa or glamma something . . Most brilliant filly but probably won't get the mile. Having said that her spring from the 500 to the 200 was pretty bloody good and was entitled to tire. My assertive play ticket for 20k would be looking good right now if she didn't go amiss .
If I owned her I would go for it and then back up in the coolmore.

Shane Anderson - "Does she give you the impression she's going to eat up the mile?"
Lees' reply - "I wouldn't say eat up."
Look, it just depends on what kind of run she gets. If one or two things go wrong she will be very vulnerable late. I think that's obvious.
If she gets a bum to follow and does no work she might be fine.
Just couldn't possibly have her at $3.00 given the query.
This situation reminds me a little bit of Rich Enuff. He battled evenly to the line but the Sydney horse was stronger at the mile. Rich Enuff was never seen again at the mile.

Drawn well in gate 2.
I think ideally for her it would be best if she didn't lead. A bit of cover would give her the best chance of running the mile.
Looking forward to the race.

Agree. Race is now hers to lose. She can take a sit with cover and won't need to absorb pressure. No need for that kind of language Sunline.
I think she's worth risking at current prices. The Flight has already produced a winner, albeit on hvy track, and it looks the best guide to my eye. If it's not I think Thrillster can also turn the tables.

I was kinda surprised she even started in the Guineas cos she seemed to race keenly at 1400m and did not look like a miler. But even more surprised at how keen punters were on the day- I thought she would blow like a gale.
