Subject: Social Media - Kings and Queens of Fake News

Philadelphia president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo quit yesterday after it emerged his wife operated fake Twitter accounts to praise his work and criticise players.

The 76ers commissioned a New York law firm to investigate.

Colangelo's wife Barbara Bottini admitted setting up the accounts and posting content, but the  investigation found no evidence of Colangelo's involvement. ( Herald Sun )

I like that her name is Bot( tini ). Quite apt. After all the problems with the US elections and various other polls around the globe the fake news from social media keeps on keeping on ( until exposed ).

There used to be a universal (all times and places) concept of "natural law." We must be making great progress to have evolved beyond that.

Slavery, just to name one thing off the top of my head, must be a natural law. There is nothing natural about natural law.

Slavery gets brought up a lot in natural law scholarship. An interesting one. But I don't want to derail the thread, and I doubt there'd be enough people here with an interest in the topic to start a new one. Just a comment about something someone posted, probably best left at that.

Maybe one relevant link to the thread - 2 of the only things all cultures seem to have agreed on are that lying and theft are wrong. Social media, fake news... a lot of both going on maybe more than ever these days!

Young Trump staffers in D.C. are having a hard time dating and socializing because most of this city loathes them https://t.co/4Jv8A5w2iy" rel="nofollow - - - politico.com/magazine/story -

A brief section of the article ....

One beleaguered 31-year-old female administration official described at length her “very, very frequent” scraps with her matches on dating apps. “You do the small talk thing, and you have a very good conversation, and then they might say, ‘You didn’t vote for Trump, right?’” she says. “As soon as I say, ‘Of course I did,’ it just devolves into all-caps ‘HOW COULD YOU BE SUCH A RACIST AND A BIGOT?’ And ‘You’re going to take away your own birth control.’” In one recent star-crossed exchange, the official told a match she worked for the federal government. When he pushed, she revealed she was in the administration. He asked her, “Do you rip babies from their mothers and then send them to Mexico?”

Evasive answers will get you only so far, though, since many dating apps provide enough information for inquisitive users to sleuth out their matches’ identities. “I literally got the other day, ‘Thanks but no thanks. Just Googled you and it said you were a mouthpiece for the Trump administration. Go kiss yourself,’” says the official. It’s all enough to drive her and some of her colleagues away from at least some of the apps. “I’m no longer on Bumble,” she says.

My cat would be smarter than some of the weirdos that are dreaming up all the nonsense these days, like not referring to people as "him" or "her " .

I would certainly have to wonder about the ethics and morals of a Trumpie. But aren't there Republicans on those dating apps?

Live report from Bear News .....

Mrs Bear and I often stay at the Royce Hotel on St Kilda Rd when we're in town. Last week we saw Senator Derryn Hinch looking bloodshot and bleary eyed moaning into his phone on one of the outside tables at the bar. Not the first time either. He's keeping that donated liver in good shape.

There was also a Real Estate seminar in one of the conference rooms this week with the speakers sounding more desperate every time we walked past. One was telling a story about another agent present where the fellow had managed to get a listing standing in the queue at a supermarket.

Trying to impress the others present the speaker exclaimed "Howzat?! Howzat?!"

Mrs Bear couldn't resist and called out through the open door "NOT OUT" and kept walking.

I think one or two agents will be OUT of business soon if they're scrounging for sales in supermarket queues.

Republicans don't seem to have to use online apps for dating as much as the Socialists, who have been taught to lodge a rape complaint if someone from the opposite sex makes eye contact for more than a few seconds ... and Democrats can't hook up with each other, because they can never agree who is going to be the victim!Cry

Hunky Tory? Attractive people more likely to be rightwing, study finds

It is a finding unlikely to prove popular with Guardian readers, but a study has concluded that attractive people are more likely to be rightwing.Cool

Previous research has found that those who are good-looking are generally treated better, achieve higher social status and earn more money, leading them to see the world as a just and fair place.

Now an American study published in the Journal of Public Economics based on comparing multiple surveys has concluded that the attractiveness of a person can correlate with their political beliefs.

Various studies over the years have shown that a person’s physical appearance significantly colours their life experience, and Peterson and Palmer say these life experiences mould our political views.

A few quotes from Henry Louis Mencken an American writer of the early twentieth century. He was known as "The Sage of Baltimore" and "The American Nietzsche"

Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

DO YOU EVER VOTE IN TWITTER POLLS?

The diaries show Mencken as an antisemite, a paternalistic racist, a mean-spirited critic of colleagues who considered him a friend, and a Germanophile who never denounced Hitler but ranted against American participation in World War II. On the subject of Jews, Mencken wrote in December 1943 that the Maryland Club had no objection to a Jew from out of town eating there occasionally. "There was a time when the club always had one Jewish member, but the last was Jacob Ulman. Ulman was married to a Christian woman ... and had little to do with the other Jews of Baltimore. When he died the board of governors decided that he should be the last of the Chosen on the club roll. There is no other Jew in Baltimore who seems suitable," Mencken wrote. Of blacks, he wrote in 1943, "... it is impossible to talk anything resembling discretion or judgment to a colored woman. They are all essentially child-like, and even hard experience does not teach them anything." On Oct. 24, 1945, he wrote, "... The course of the United States in World War II ... was dishonest, dishonorable and ignominious, and the Sunpapers, in supporting Roosevelt's foreign policy, shared in this disgrace." Mencken scholar Charles A. Fecher of Baltimore, who edited the book, writes in his introduction that Mencken's hatred of Franklin Roosevelt "was, indeed, maniacal -- there is no other word to use."

An overly simplistic reflection on Mencken typical of the cut and paste era of analysis. The man advocated against all religious belief.

Read some of his actual work instead of some lame analysis by third parties.

I enjoy Mencken. He certainly has a gift for compressing ideas into short, memorable phrases. Perhaps he held some opinions that might seem “unenlightened” by today’s standards, but that’s a charge you could level at quite a few historical figures.

And probably more unfair with Mencken, as he seemed to pretty much not like anyone.

Some?LOL The man was a racist, extreme Social Darwinist who hated the poor, democracy, Jews, America, but loved Germany and the Prussian ruling class and didn't mind the Nazis.Wink

With someone so prolific, you need to be careful cherry picking singular quotes. Gore Vidal:

Far from being an anti-Semite, Mencken was one of the first journalists to denounce the persecution of the Jews in Germany at a time when The New York Times, say, was notoriously reticent. On November 27, 1938, Mencken writes (Baltimore Sun), "It is to be hoped that the poor Jews now being robbed and mauled in Germany will not take too seriously the plans of various politicians to rescue them." He then reviews the various schemes to "rescue" the Jews from the Nazis, who had not yet announced their own final solution.[52]

As Germany gradually conquered Europe, Mencken attacked President Roosevelt for refusing to admit Jewish refugees into the United States and called for their wholesale admission:

There is only one way to help the fugitives, and that is to find places for them in a country in which they can really live. Why shouldn't the United States take in a couple hundred thousand of them, or even all of them?[53]

"The Jews could be put down very plausibly as the most unpleasant race ever heard of. As commonly encountered, they lack many of the qualities that mark the civilized man: courage, dignity, incorruptibility, ease, confidence. They have vanity without pride, voluptuousness without taste, and learning without wisdom. Their fortitude, such as it is, is wasted upon puerile objects, and their charity is mainly a form of display."

And that’s a sentiment he disowned.

Again you need to look in a broader context. Churchill once said he was all for gassing “uncivilised tribes” of northern India. How much does that define the man?

As I said earlier Tlaz you're a copybook Google expert with no idea on the subject.

And a quote from Gore Vidal on the subject of Mencken's so called anti semitism -
