With the rumour mill in overdrive, and plenty of social media opinions, Ben should probably be very diligent in following the rules. This is another problem for him.

If something like this happened in Sydney or Melbourne the stewards would have scratched all his runners on the day.

Trainer goes on front foot against whispering campaign Ben Currie.

Queensland trainer Ben Currie says it is time for the whispering campaign against him to stop.

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission on Tuesday took the extraordinary step of issuing a statement to quash rumours one of its stewards was under investigation for tipping off Toowoomba-based Currie about stable inspections.

QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett insisted the rumours were baseless.

ā€œI would like to make it categorically clear that there is no foundation to these rumours whatsoever,ā€ Commissioner Barnett said.

ā€œItā€™s grossly unfair to the steward concerned to tarnish his reputation in this way.ā€

Currie, who won the Queensland premiership in 2016-17 with 103 winners, told Racenet he had nothing to hide and did not have an improper association with the steward.

ā€œI was at the stables when that inspection took place and I was even drug tested myself,ā€ Currie said.

ā€œThe steward and I are not even that close.

ā€œI donā€™t know where all these whispers and rumours are coming from but I want them to stop.

ā€œI run my own business and maybe some people donā€™t like me for some reason, but itā€™s not as if Iā€™ve been pushing my success down anyoneā€™s throat.

ā€œI donā€™t think I have been unfairly treated at all by QRIC and Iā€™m not hiding anything.ā€

Barnett explained why he had taken the step of putting out a statement.

ā€œI have decided to release a statement to put these rumours to rest because of the adverse way they reflect on the reputation of the Commission, the individual officer concerned and Toowoombaā€™s thoroughbred industry,ā€ Commissioner Barnett said.

ā€œIt is vital that industry participants have faith in the work of the Commissionā€™s Authorised Officers.ā€

Yep, this is no new revelation. The big difference here is QRIC actually pursuing the matters now.

Toowoomba races used to be an option for SEQ trainers. They donā€™t even bother sending horses up the range any more.

Are they pursuing it? Or is it just an illusion to appease?

Horseshoe, your reply is rubbish.....The only runner that Baldwin and Lockwood have had there in their last 50 runners were yesterday. Oā€™Shea has not been there, but you probably meant Oā€™Dea. Lordy means that trainers used to regularly go to race in Toowoomba, but no longer more. Many feel there is not a level playing field.

Yesterdayā€™s meeting was a stand-alone Saturday metro meeting with several stakes races. Those guys you mentioned are very rarely seen at the regular provincial meetings there. Baldwin used to send horses there quite regularly. Been nearly 12 months since his last one. Most SEQ trainers donā€™t even bother looking at the Toowoomba calendar these days.

Dorries has put an incorrect gloss on what QRIC has said.

Barnett's statement (per the article) was: ā€œThe allocation of prizemoney won by the horses under investigation has been suspended pending the final outcomeā€.

Dorries has taken that to mean (again per the article): Prizemoney won by Currie-trained horses at Toowoomba last Saturday ā€“ including Weetwood Handicap winner Amanaat and Toowoomba Guineas winner Hang ā€“ have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

As a shareholder in a Currie runner that won prizemoney last Saturday at Toowoomba and has been paid (presumably meaning she is not a "horse under investigation"), the article is not 100% correct. Or maybe they'll be asking for a refund shortly!

Toowoomba trainer suspended over treatment of horses

QUEENSLAND Racing Integrity Commission stewards have suspended trainer Mark Currie after charging him with 16 counts relating to race day treatment.

Currie is a licensed trainer but often works as stable foreman for his son Ben who is the state's leading trainer on winners.

Stewards interviewed both men after opening an inquiry into activities at the stables on April 7, the day of the Listed Weetwood Handicap.

Two of Ben Currie's stable staff have been stood down pending further inquiries.

QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett yesterday said Currie senior had been charged with 12 counts of race day treatment and four counts of improper practice.

Barnett said Currie had entered a plea of not guilty and the matters have been adjourned for hearing on a date to be fixed.

He said Currie had his licence suspended until the matters were determined.

"The first treatment allegedly occurred pre-dawn that morning and the second was the suspicious activity the QRIC Integrity Investigations Team (IIT) members witnessed while monitoring the premises," Barnett said.

"It was also alleged that race day treatment occurred at the same stables before Ben Currie trained horses were transported to race at Doomben and Gatton on Saturday, March 24, 2018.

"Today's outcome is not the end of the investigation, the focus of these continuing and protracted enquiries is the involvement of other racing industry participants and the outcome may not be known for several weeks."

I find it a bit strange that they have allowed his Weetwood winner Amanaat run today considering it was of the morning of this horses win that the inspection took part, sat 3and4 wide and bolts in as fav. very easy in the betting to day and drifting.

Because he hasnā€™t been charged, and generally (although not in this case) people arenā€™t suspended or disqualified until found guilty.

Steve Herbert distances himself from racehorse he co-owned with businessman Tony Khoury

EMBATTLED Andrews government minister Steve Herbert has moved to distance himself from the brother of a Mick Gatto associate with whom he owned a racehorse.

The Herald Sun can reveal that Mr Herbert and wife Liza McDonald had a stake in Gold Coast thoroughbred Sea Devil, along with Melbourne businessman Tony Khoury ā€” the brother of powerful underworld figure Gattoā€™s close mate John Khoury.

Tony Khoury had assets including luxury cars, betting accounts and 10 racehorses, frozen by the tax office in 2012 following a joint investigation with Victoria Police anti-gangland detectives.

The ATO applied to restrain nearly $8 million worth of his assets, alleging $4 million in bank deposits could not be explained.

The matter settled and Mr Khoury, a long-time gambler and horseracing enthusiast, remains an active horse owner. Neither Tony Khoury, nor John, have any criminal convictions.

The Sea Devil syndicate was then formed in May 2015, with its composition being public since then.

But Mr Herbert yesterday moved to distance himself from Tony Khoury, whose tax office tangle had made headlines in 2012.

The minister, in trouble for using his taxpayer-funded chauffeur to ferry his dogs between his city and country homes, has insisted he had no idea of Khouryā€™s involvement in the syndicate.

The horse was retired last year and Mr Herbert, who took on the Corrections portfolio in May, says he sold his share early this year.

ā€œMy wife and I had a small share in a horse syndicate,ā€ Mr Herbert said through his media adviser.

ā€œWe have not had the financial share since early this year. Myself and my wife were unaware Tony Khoury was part of the syndicated horse nor have we associated with him.ā€

ā€œMyself and my wife were unaware Tony Khoury was part of the syndicated horse nor have we associated with him.ā€ Picture Norm Oorloff
While it is not uncommon for members of large syndicates to be unaware of other shareholdersā€™ identities, other Sea Devil owners told the Herald Sun they were aware of Mr Khouryā€™s stake.

State Parliamentā€™s register of membersā€™ interests shows Mr Herbert cancelled his declared share in the horse.

A share in the horse Gorgeous Gal is Mr Herbertā€™s only current declared share in a racehorse. He routinely declares Racing Victoria tickets among his gifts worth over $500.

Tony Khoury told the Herald Sun that Sea Devil was retired, saying: ā€œI donā€™t think it was much chop.ā€

Of Mr Herbert, he said: ā€œNever met him, donā€™t know him ... Iā€™ve got nothing to say.ā€

Opposition leader Matthew Guy said Mr Herbert had to go.

Mr Herbertā€™s embarrassing decision to have his chauffeur drive dogs Patch and Ted around the state has made headlines around the world ā€” including China, the United States, Germany and Israel.

If they let his horses run for the next 6 months, racing in Qld should just shut up shop. Trainer is responsible for what happens under his banner, not his father and not his stable hands.

In general the notion that there should be a blanket ban on horses because of the actions of individuals is a load of shyte. If owners are knowingly involved in shonky practices then provide the evidence, convict and ban them and withhold their share of any prizemoney it earns in their absence.

Some owners just follow the gear, if not provide it. Thatā€™s why occasionally, instead of just banning trainers, they should look into banning horses.

Thatā€™s already started with some like steroids hasnā€™t it? Agree though. Start with a 3 month ban on a horse similar to bleeders.
In general the notion that there should be a blanket ban on horses because of the actions of individuals is a load of shyte. If owners are knowingly involved in shonky practices then provide the evidence, convict and ban them and withhold their share of any prizemoney it earns in their absence.Ā

What is the current disincentive to owners to use cheating trainers?

Non really.  Its just a matter of conscience.  Thats why I suggested a 3 month ban, which basically equates to spelling a horse.  If a horse returns a positive then it cannot race again this prep.

Problem is when a case is appealed.  This is particularly an issue in QLD in the current set up where appeals are directly referred to QCAT.  The wait list means they take at least 6 months to be heard.

Maybe a sliding scale of bans depending on substance - culminating in long bans for blood doping. And maybe racing authorities all need to have a proper appeal system in place. Cheating needs to be eradicated, racing taken into the 21st century and what is happening here is cheating encouragement. Unfair to connections of cheating horses? Doing nothing is unfair to everyone else.

Trainer Ben Currie buoyed by integrity meeting

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/author/Brendan+Cormick" rel="nofollow - BRENDAN CORMICK

Queenslandā€™s leading trainer Ben Currie felt a momentum shift for the better yesterday when he received encouraging news on a couple of fronts.

Currie appeared at the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission yesterday and left feeling upbeat about the ongoing investigation into alleged race day treatment at one of his stabling complexes during the past month. ā€œI had a meeting with them today which I thought was very positive. Hopefully weā€™ll have it all cleared up,ā€ Currie said. ā€œIā€™ve been saying the whole way through that I havenā€™t done anything wrong and thatā€™s what will come out I guess. Obviously itā€™s ongoing so itā€™s tricky to know what to say.ā€

Currieā€™s father Mark has had his trainerā€™s licence suspended while he faces 12 charges of race day treatment of horses on April 7 and four of improper practice. Two stable hands employed by Ben Currie were stood down on April 13 as the QRIC delved deeper into possible breaches of the rules of racing.

Questions were also asked of Currie by stewards about the improved performance of With A Promise, shock winner of the Tails Stakes at Doomben. Backed from $61 into $19, With A Promise produced a dramatic form reversal, having beaten one runner home in two starts leading into the race.

ā€œShe was third-up from a spell, stepped up to a mile (1600m) and was suited by a heavy track,ā€ Currie explained. ā€œI would have told the stewards on the day but I had to get the other horse into a truck and get it home.ā€

The other horse was Amanaat, who incurred ghastly injuries by smashing his head against the metal partition between his and an adjoining barrier stall while wrestling a barrier attendant on Saturday.

ā€œThe damage was slightly better than first thought. He has fractured his jaw but it will not require wiring,ā€ Currie said.

ā€œHe lost several teeth and received cuts and bruising. He needed some antibiotics and something for the pain and weā€™ll keep him at the stables and look after him for the next few weeks.ā€

Currie said the difficulty may centre on getting the talented sprinter to eat initially.

Originally with David Hayes and Tom Dabernig in 2016 and a winner on debut at Pakenham for the training partnership, Amanaat has won a further seven races from nine starts for Currie.

Currie hopes he can get Amanaat back racing toward the end of winter.

An unfortunate choice of words.

"Mark Currie appeared today at the QRIC Brisbane headquarters to answer to 12 charges under AR 178E relating to the administration of a medication to a horse on race day without the permission of the stewards and four charges under AR 175 (a) relating to improper practice," Barnett said.

Currie is the fourth person connected to the Ben Currie stable to be banned in the past few weeks.

Greg Britnell was last week suspended for 18 months and in doing so became the third stablehand to be suspended since Currie's Toowoomba stables were the subject of suspicious activity on Weetwood Day on 7 April.

Cameron Schwenke was suspended for three months on 11 May after being found guilty of assisting in the administration of a substance to seven race horses on Weetwood Day and Silde Canda was found guilty of providing false evidence during the investigation and suspended for three months on 15 May.

You are right TJ!

You would think that if are employed in his stable, you are a chance of being thrown under the bus the next time something takes place, and he has no more relatives to ask to step up.

His local, must have some tall stories to tell!

Stewards have to make sure they get it right these days, It is not as simple as it was in the old days when Stewards would see something that looked fishy and the protagonists would be out for a year or two, They have to cross their i's and dote their T's first.

That seems to be the case here. When they finalise it I suspect it will be big.

The long term inuendo has been about the performance of Ben Currie's horses has it not?

Presumably all the horses involved in the recent suspensions were not his otherwise RQ has some questions to answer.

Absolutely 3bm, he's the licence holder and yet everyone around him is going down? something not right here, however, the stewards did say more to come.

I have no doubt their legal team may find a loophole to allow Ben to walk free. But is that right? All owners continually supporting the stable, must either believe he is a genius, or they do not care by what methods they achieve success. Personally, I prefer a trainer that always abides by the rules and tries to win by being a good horseperson. I will never condone cheating, and find these recent cases all leaving a very bad impression of this industry. Good lawyers might get them off, but hopefully honest owners will leave the stables to let them know itā€™s unacceptable.

Some owners are prepared to let the legal process take its course without pre-supposing an outcome Batman. In any case my filly with the stable broke her leg at trackwork a few weeks ago which I suppose the likes of you would consider to be karma for my "support of the stable".

Itā€™s not Karma, itā€™s what overuse of PEDs does - puts too much stress on their bodies.

No, I do not wish harm on any horses, no matter who the trainer is. Trying the sympathy card is pretty odd behaviour for you though. The enquiry will take place followed by the legal process of appeals if required. But if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it might just be a duck. šŸ¤“šŸ¤“šŸ¤“

Wow. Toowoomba is really getting a shake up. Could be a positive thing

Toowoomba track workers stood down after positive drug tests
Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) stewards have today stood down three track workers after testing positive to illicit drugs during no notice testing at Toowoomba.
The track riders tested positive to methyl amphetamine, cocaine and cannabis and have been stood down pending the return of secondary testing.
QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett said the Commission had adopted an anywhere anytime approach to drug testing of racing participants.

Those shockwave treatments could explain why the filly broke down - numbs the area and if there are skeletal issues - well I donā€™t need to elaborate.

Only incredible thing is that they let this rubbish go on for so long! But what do you expect from people who gave a Sydney trainer no penalty for raceday treatment before a group 1 and gave a few pathetic months to his strapper instead.

Interstate stewards might wonder why Currie is unable to nominate any runners, yet the bloke who has been found guilty & penalised accordingly carries on.

Currie will get his, in due course, however there is a clear double standard in the Qld stewardsā€™ treatment of their own collar.
