Isn't it nice seeing Star Shower and Sir Dapper in a pedigree like this.  Sir Dapper was one of my favourites in the 1980 with his battles against Emancipation.  While Star Shower was a brilliant 2yo with speed to burn.  One won the Golden Slipper and the Spring Champion Stakes and had stakes wins from 1000m to 2100m while the other won the Blue Diamond.  But very few pedigrees would see them on the page today.  So I find it both interesting and nice.

Absolutely a freakish run today.
Lucky to stay on all fours after Ef Troop came across and speared into her.

She kept her mind on the job ahead and gave him a cold in the straight.
We'll be seeing a lot more of her this year on that run.

As a 3YO she won the Listed Crown Lager Stakes (now G3 Alexandra Stakes) when it was run in the spring.

I thought she may have started in the early season 2yo races.

I always remember her racing in the same crop as Show County and others.

Very relaxed and professional for a 2yo. That combined with her racing pattern and obvious ability will make her very competitive in the big 2yo races.

Stable going very well but get the sense it could be on the verge of something big. Certainly the ambition seems to be there.

Top runs at Rosehill Saturday had to be shared by Sunlight & Estijaab.    Getting over the 1100 in best of 4 races over that distance.
Pointer for the Golden Slipper.    Every bit as impressive as the Blue Diamond winner in Melbourne.

Even better Macca, pretty much every article about the race is about how Estijaab was a better run than Sunlight. Keep buttering up on the horse who actually wins whether she leads or stalks rather than the allegedly unlucky and you'll make plenty!

GOOD ADVICE was from the famous Pittsburg Phil,   Winners keep on winning , losers keep on losing,    Most run pretty true to their form when we allow for the luck in running , rider decisions , suitable draws etc.
As Mrs Barnaby said, only recently , Thoroughbreds are much more reliable than the Spouse.

A very professional filly but let's remember she won a MM by 2L (from a 100-1 pop) when half the field including the second fave was taken out.

Many seemed convinced those two fillies have the measure of Written By by I'm not.

Written By did it at both ends from a wide draw & was dominant to the line.   The Slipper is wide open at this stage IMHO.

Few decades ago Macca I had a new flatmate who developed a sudden interest in horse racing. He read one of PPs books and promptly went out and backed a 10/1 winner knowing virtually nothing about form class etc. All pretty much based on winners winning. Don't know how he went subsequently because I politely asked him to find alternative digs when he bought a dog and it dragged its bum around the floor.

She ran one fast sectional 1000-800, then coasted home in 35+. Written By had to run 5-6l fatser over the last 600m to hold off Sandbar. Advantage Sunlight imo but I won't be surprised if neither wins.

She’s definately run to a level I didn’t think she was capable of.

And it’s always good to see a filly win a ‘stallion making’ race

The last thing we need are more overhyped 3yo colts.

I think most thought she was not up to top class racing after that defeat.

However against those opinions Tony McEvoy said she would improve a heap after the run and boy was he correct.

She was outstanding yesterday. Fought off a good colt - a bit of a gunna, but a good colt nonetheless.

To do what she has done this prep off an arduous 2yo campaign is just sensational. She's one of the better 2/3yo fillies in the last so many years.

Is she the first Magic Millions / Coolmore double winner?

Didn't think she'd get to G1 level against her age group even after the second up win but her Manikato run showed she had more than I thought as a 3yo. She was brave yesterday sitting on Written By's flanks with no cover. Her size helps. Apart from our mate TAS it looks like another thin crop. Hopefully something might emerge in the autumn.

Since her win last night djebel I have tried to rate her in order of the best Magic Millions winners ever, and if she is not the best she is in the grand final!

I have her just in front and then I have got General Nediym and Snippets.

Brave Warrior is somewhere next, and Assertive Lad sits somewhere on the next line with Phelan ready.

But she has claims to being the best!

A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be 1/5 lame in the off foreleg. Co-Trainer Mr T McEvoy advised given the position of Sunlight in that it raced further back than anticipated he was satisfied with its performance. Co-Trainer Mr T McEvoy was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Sunlight barrier trailling or racing again.

The future of three-time Group 1 winner Sunlight remains in the air following back-to-back poor performances.

Having run last in the G1 TAB Classic (1200m), Tony and Calvin McEvoy made changes in an effort to see an improved performance in The Goodwood (1200m) last Saturday, but the mare failed again, finishing six lengths adrift of Trekking.

"She was obviously disappointing again on the weekend and she'll go to the paddock now," Calvin McEvoy said.

"The owners will make a decision on her future while she spells."

With respect, why couldn't Sunlight shine at stud, given her:

* dam has produced two stakes-winners and a stakes place-getter;
* grand-dam has produced two stakes-winners and a stakes place-getter;

Sunlight sets Magic Millions record

Brad Bishop

Sarah Rutten was by Sunlight's side for most of her brilliant racing career, so it was therefore appropriate she was next to her when she set a new Magic Millions record as the National Broodmare Sale began on the Gold Coast on Monday.

The three-time Group 1 winner became the dearest horse ever sold through the Magic Millions Sale ring when knocked down to Coolmore for $4.2 million.

It eclipsed the $3.4m that Listen Here, the dam of Deep Field and Shooting To Win, fetched when sold in-foal at the 2016 National Broodmare Sale.

The highest price ever paid for a mare straight off the track, as Sunlight was, having been retired after contesting this year's The Goodwood in Adelaide, was the $3m paid for Princess Coup in 2009.

Rutten, who works for Sunlight's trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy, performed the role of handler as the four-year-old daughter of Zoustar was offered for sale and did not hide how sad she was to say goodbye to the mare, a $300,000 Magic Millions yearling graduate who won $6,575,950 on the racetrack.

"Everyone who knows me would know I would get emotional to have to say goodbye to her, but to know that she's going on to do something that I can see her babies and that I can go visit her wherever she goes is amazing," Rutten said.

"It's a very sad day, because she's not going to be in the stable anymore. For me and for Tony and Calvin and the whole team it's a very sad day."

Sunlight was not the only seven-figure lot of the opening day of the sale, which continues on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Invincibella going for $1.3m in the first 20 minutes of selling.

The former Chris Waller-trained mare, who won a G1 Tatt's Tiara and was a three-time winner on the Magic Millions rich January race day, was also bought by Coolmore.

Both Sunlight and Invincibella will be served by American Triple Crown winner Justify, who stands at Coolmore.

Give us a spell? Stupid money. Yes good mare who was made to dance every dance! Gee she would have to be exceptional at stud to recoup in these times?

I saw that Magnier also brought Champagne Cuddles for $2 million.

Great for the previous owners of all three mares!

If she was mine she'd be straight on a plane to New Zealand if it was possible in todays climate to visit Ocean Park. This is a wonderful mating that is full of female family duplication. Just in the first 8 generations you have duplications to Special, Lalun, Neocracy, Teresina, Democratie, Tara and full sisters Minnie Hauk and Show lady.
The resultant foal/s will also be a realistic chance to be effective over a mile.

A girl and her best friend - the story behind the Sunlight tears

A girl and her best friend - the story behind the Sunlight tears

It wouldn't have mattered if Sunlight had sold for $420,000 instead of the https://www.racenet.com.au/news/sunlight-fetches-$4-2-million-at-magic-millions-sale-20200727" rel="nofollow - $4.2million she fetched - Sarah Rutten's reaction would have been the same and the tears would have flowed just as freely.

Mare of a lifetime Sunlight, the three-time Group I winner and earner of more than $6.5 million, was a lot of things to a lot of people.

But what she meant to long-time strapper, track rider and travelling companion Sarah Rutten was brilliantly captured and highlighted in an emotional and extremely moving image on Monday.

The photograph of Rutten breaking down and weeping was taken in an unguarded moment just two minutes after the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained mare had gone under the hammer at the Magic Millions National https://www.racenet.com.au/tracks/vic/sale" rel="nofollow - Sale on the https://www.racenet.com.au/tracks/qld/gold-coast" rel="nofollow - Gold Coast on Monday.

Magic Millions themselves probably summed it up best when they later tweeted the photo, which went viral on social media, with the caption "the photo says it all."

And they were right - in a time when racing has often been hammered with bad news stories like the ugly https://www.racenet.com.au/trainer/darren-weir" rel="nofollow - Darren Weir and Aquanita affairs - this was a moment where the pure and unadulterated love of a horse took centre stage.

Rutten, 27, told Racenet on Tuesday that her emotions had overflowed because of one simple factor.

Sunlight was her best mate. She has spent more time with Sunlight than any person over the last three years.

"I do wish more people would understand how strappers and stable staff absolutely love horses - Sunlight was my best friend," Rutten said, her voice cracking with emotion.

"I don't have a (romantic) relationship because I travel so much with the horses, Sunlight was my life.

"I'm obviously quite upset in that photo, which I knew was going to happen.

"People came up and talked to me afterwards but I didn't really know what I was saying, I was still in shock as to what had just happened.

"When Sunlight left the stables they kind of prepared me five days in advance so I went and spent a lot of time with her before she left.

"When she left it was early in the morning and I was a mess the whole day.

"But it still felt a bit surreal to me - almost like she was in the paddock having a spell - so taking her through the sales ring on the Gold Coast really made me feel as though it was goodbye.

"I did say goodbye to her - I just went in and sat with her while she was eating and I think she knows how much she meant to me and how upset I was.

"I've had a few moments like those with her, obviously life has challenges sometimes, but whenever something has happened I have always gone and sat with her and life has suddenly felt better."

Sarah was by Sunlight's side through the whole journey - here they are pictured in Queensland before Sunlight won the 2018 Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Photo: The Courier-Mail.

It was obvious to all and sundry what made Sunlight so brilliant on the track, in a grand career which was sparked when she won the 2018 Gold Coast Magic Millions as a two-year-old and continued on to three rampaging Group I wins.

But what made her so special off the track?

Rutten describes her unshakeable bond with the mighty mare.

"Very early I rode her in her first day and I thought she is so quiet - I normally like horses which have a bit of fire in them," she remembers.

"But she was just quiet as a baby.

"She had her first start at https://www.racenet.com.au/tracks/vic/flemington" rel="nofollow - Flemington and I pretty much never left her side after that.

"She made everything so easy, obviously the pressure was always there, but nothing was ever hard for her.

"Even though she could be a bit cranky, in the times that she wasn't she was lovely."

Strappers spend hours nurturing these equine athletes. Sarah Rutten has been with Sunlight the whole way, this is special. ?? https://twitter.com/mcevoymitchell?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" rel="nofollow - @mcevoymitchell https://t.co/K5YwkPkoAG" rel="nofollow - pic.twitter.com/K5YwkPkoAG

Rutten's favourite racing memory of Sunlight wasn't one of her three Group I wins.

It came when she finished second as an unfancied $26 chance in the 2019 Golden Eagle after she had been well beaten into 10th place behind Yes Yes Yes in https://www.racenet.com.au/the-everest" rel="nofollow - The Everest .

Such was Sunlight's profound impact on Rutten, she was unable to go out after a rare Sunlight flop and remained in her Sydney hotel room after things went wrong in The Everest.

"The Golden Eagle is probably my favourite memory of Sunlight, as far as racing goes, winning the Coolmore was amazing, but the Golden Eagle takes the cake because there was negativity when she didn't run well in The Everest," Rutten says.

"The night of The Everest, after she didn't run well, I didn't leave my room that whole night even though I got invited out for dinner.

"I took it so personally, I just wanted to stay home.

"When the Golden Eagle came around and everyone said she was no chance to even run a place. I knew she was going to run well and she proved me right. I was just so happy."

The photo says it all.

The hardest thing for any strapper is often letting go of their favourite horse but Rutten's sorrow has been somewhat numbed because new owners Coolmore have promised she can visit whenever she wants.

She will take them up on that offer, whenever possible, and also can't wait to see a generation of Sunlight's babies.

"They came straight up to me yesterday and said I am welcome whenever, just to call up and they will give me a tour of the farm and I can come and see her," she said.

"That makes me feel good because it's not like she is completely gone.

"I thought she might go overseas and you don't really know what happens overseas.

"But the fact that she is here and at such an amazing place like Coolmore is fantastic."

Queensland photographer Michael McInally was the man who snapped the photo of Rutten and told Racenet about the lead-up to taking the emotional image.

McInally, working for Magic Millions, realised many hours before Sunlight went through the ring that Rutten was very emotional and knew he had to be in the right place at the right time to capture her unguarded reactions after the star mare was sold.

The picture of her in tears – one of a quickfire series he took – was snapped barely two minutes after Sunlight went through the ring.

“Sunlight came out early before she went into the ring and Sarah was full of emotion then, she might not have been crying but you could see that a couple of hours later when the horse was going to go through the ring she was going to be very upset,” McInally said.

“She has had such an incredible bond with that horse.

“I just knew I had to be here after the horse went through the ring.

“It was only two minutes after - Sarah walked back from the ring into the stall, Sunlight was in a barn right next door to the ring.

“I literally took a picture of Tom Magnier and then ran straight over to take a picture of Sarah.

“She just burst into tears and that’s when that picture was taken.”

Great article and the photo is the best racing photo of the decade.

I suppose the dogooders will say she was just upset at not having dominance over an animal, as people in horse racing do not love the horses they have contact with Wacko

All the animal rights supporters and their media friends max feel that all animals should be free, and so they hate anyone who houses animals.

Trust me when they get through with the racing codes they are coming after your canary, german shepherd and siamese cat, because anyone who  "keeps a animal against their will" is inhumane.
