Williams in clear as Howley takes over

Andrew Eddy

24 November, 2017

Liam Howley officially became Lloyd Williams' private trainer on Friday after Racing Victoria announced it was comfortable with the training arrangements at the millionaire owner's Mt Macedon property.

Chief executive Giles Thompson earlier this week announced that RV would 'revisit' the training regime after claims on radio from Williams that he was in fact the trainer of the team.

But on Friday RV declared: RV Stewards remain comfortably satisfied that Mr Williams is continuing to operate in the role of an Executive Chairman of Hudson Conway Racing and that Mr Howley, as general trainer, will be responsible for the day-to-day management of all horses in training at Macedon Lodge - Hudson Conway Racing's private training property."

Howley takes over the reins immediately from Robert Hickmott, who is leaving Mt Macedon after nine years as a head trainer.

Williams was inducted into racing's Hall Of Fame last year and earlier this month won his sixth Melbourne Cup as an owner when the Irish horse Rekindling nosed out his stablemate Johannes Vermeer.

It looks like the "revisit" of the situation, was a 1 hour wine and dine, at Crown Casino and a few questions over the lobster bisque.

Seriously, if they think this situation does not bring racing's image into question, then they need to look up the word integrity.

So the exact situation as we are being told sits like this.

1. Lloyd decides when and where the horses are going to run. Okay no problems there.
2. Mr Howley, where ever he has sprung from, is in charge of the everyday operations of the stable, and the care of the horses. This means that if the horses are presented at the track with a substance, then it is Mr Howley, who will be charged and investigated. Okay that is fine.

The problem I now have is if a horse has accepted for a race, and then for some reason, is scratched after the deadline, or misses the race, say in a similar case to Night's Watch on Saturday at Doomben, then who gets the breach notice and who gets charged?

This is doing my head in, I am just glad it is RVL's problem and not mine!

I would like to know from those closer to the stables if arrangements like this have happened before.

Does Godolphin tell their trainer where and when to run?

Does David Moodie from Contract Racing tell his trainers where to run?

Yes he has. At the moment he has taken over John Sadlers team as he is suspended until February

Voyager, whether they tell their trainers where to run or not is totally up to the owners.

If Trainers are big enough they can also tell the owner where to shove their horse.

Sheikh speaks out on Cecil

Richard Edmondson reports from Dubai on the latest twist to the public split between a top owner and leading trainer

Sheikh Mohammed, and the Maktoum family as a whole, handle their trainers like some people treat their training shoes. They will only get rid of them as a last resort.

The simple logic applied is that Dubai's rulers are happy to grant loyalty as long as it also comes to them on the other side of the carriageway. Last year, though, Sheikh Mohammed felt Henry Cecil's steering had become too erratic and, on the night of the long line of horseboxes in Newmarket, he removed all his horses from Warren Place. Yesterday, sitting in the middle of a mound of cushions in his tent at the Al Quoz stables, he explained why.

The single incident that provoked the split came just before the Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot last year. Cecil said he wanted to run the promising colt Mark Of Esteem but could not gain Sheikh Mohammed's permission. The owner replied that the horse was injured and should never have been a consideration for the race. "I can cope with most things but I can't cope with somebody letting the whole world know that I'm stopping a horse from running in a big race and yet the horse is lame," the Sheikh said yesterday. "I can't take that. When that trust goes everything goes.''

The discord between the two men had been in place for some time, however. While for some the racehorse is a rich man's trophy, for Sheikh Mohammed, who is just about the wealthiest of the lot, the sport is about participation. He likes to put in his 10 dirhams worth, and his thoughts were not always in line with Cecil's.

"The problem is that I am a horseman, not just an owner," he said. "Therefore I want to know. I want to get involved, I want to interfere. The pleasure is being part of my horses, not just turning up in a smart suit and watching them at the racecourse.

"Before I went to Henry Cecil he was champion trainer, a great trainer, and he was when I was with him and I'm sure he will be in the future. But Henry wants his own way. I kept tackling him and a friendly fight was always there.

"He would not come my way and I would not go his, so I knew neither of us would enjoy it. So I decided it would be better to cut it clean. It was for my sake and his sake. I have nothing personal against Henry Cecil. If everything changed, and he understood the way I think, there is nothing stopping me going back with him.''

Mark Of Esteem is still bothered intermittently by an arthritic spur on one of his knees, but he has thrived in Arabia this winter. "We are very happy with this horse and I think that he is good," the Sheikh said on an inspection of his Godolphin-owned three-year-old.

This plain statement was enough to prompt Mike Dillon, representing the bookmakers Ladbrokes, to cut the colt's price to 7-1 (from 9-1) for the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on 4 May, which will be his first race of the season.

The favourite at 5-4 is Alhaarth, who is owned by the man who used to stick up for Sheikh Mohammed in the playground, his elder brother Sheikh Hamdan.

Mark Of Esteem apart, the Godolphin wintering unit has yet to unearth the same sort of talents that swept the board in Europe last season.

"Last year was wonderful and that doesn't happen every year," Sheikh Mohammed said. "We have good horses but we don't have another Lammtarra. These horses are more exposed and I would be happy if we win one Classic anywhere in Europe.''

With the Emirates' worst spell of weather for 60 years now behind him and the runners for tomorrow's inaugural Dubai World Cup all in place and bedded in, the Sheikh's pulse has slowed. "I promise you I am not nervous any more," he said. "I am very relaxed.''

He will, however, have to face a conundrum when Godolphin's forces have to be restocked later in the year. "There is only one big problem left," he said. "There are no more Henry Cecil horses for me to take away.''

I can easily side with Cecil here, the boss said the horse was lame ( spur on knee) but as we know some horses can handle a little pain when the crunch comes , just like a fair dinkum athlete, adrenaline kicks in but the weak will fold up, Cecil would know this but the boss thought otherwise, nuff said.

The Australian Guineas is hardly a Classic, it’s only a relatively new race. But I know where you’re heading with the comment.

The two-year program, which was founded by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum of Dubai is open to just 12 candidates each year from a selection pool across the world.

When he was selected he got an around-the-world crash course in all aspects of the racing industry, from training to stud management, business and veterinary care.

SURREY - a 5yo by High Chaparral x Makybe Diva

I’d be surprised if he ever saw the race track.

My guess, Almandin and Aloft will run in the Peter Young Stakes in 2 weeks then the Australian Cup, The Taj Mahal and Rekindling will run in the Blamey and spell for the sring, Johannes Vermeer I reckon he'll run in the Queen Elizabeth. Maybe he goes to the Aus Cup with the other two then either BMW or Ranvet on his way.

Only a few weeks ago, the stable advised media outlets that Rekindling would be aimed at the Sydney Cup, via either the Aust Cup or Tancred Stks.

Yep we all know the setup. Nick does admin etc?, Lloyd decides races and routines, Liam follows orders. Beautiful spot to train, minimal stress, decent folk, probably decent reward, no worries about funds for feed vets etc, good learning experience. Without actually knowing, it sounds like a great job for a horseman/woman.

So what is his actual strike rate ?

2 runners in the race, Is he 100% or 50% ?

Who is Liam? Never seen him, what does he look like?
Just trained his first winner with his first runner in a listed race, and the ‘media gag’ meant that he was not allowed to be interviewed. Instead they had that big fat slob who lives off Daddy’s Visa

What's everyone's opinion on Harrison's chances of winning the 2nd at Flemington on saturday?

$14 available with a Boost. Stable in form. Ben Melham riding. Won at the distance.

Looks like good odds.

The horse needs the boost , not the Punter.

Thought I would play with the No 7 ... Williams ride .

I've had the practice so an expert on this one..     Wouldn't be the first one Craig has thrown a leg over either.   GET ON Scamanda , a special.

Like trying to find a needle in a haystack with this mob Scamanda, running over 4000mts in G1s and he's rated an 86, been off the scene for a while, one thing I'm certain of that's your guess will be better than mine , wonder if he's been bought as a chopping block for his nice ones in trackwork, over to you my friend.

Graeme Rogerson has his eye on training a second Melbourne Cup winner after securing a deal to buy ready-made stayers.
The New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame trainer has negotiated a deal to purchase five proven gallopers from leading owner Lloyd Williams, the majority owner of Rogerson's New Zealand-bred 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient.

Among them is dual Group 1 winner Gallante, a winner of more than $2 million from just 20 starts.

The seven-year-old Montjeu gelding holds a nomination for next month's $2m Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick, a race he won in 2016, though Rogerson was cautious about tackling the April 14 feature.

"He's a proven mud runner. He's unbeaten on wet tracks. We might kick him off at Awapuni on the 31st (March) and then think about whether we go to the Sydney Cup or not," Rogerson said in reference to the G2 Awapuni Gold Cup (2000m), a race in which Gallante would carry just 55kg under set-weights-and-penalties conditions.

The other four horses that will join Rogerson and his training partners - wife Debbie and granddaughter Bailey - are G2 Herbert Power Stakes winner Assign, two-win galloper Pattern, Galileo six-year-old gelding My Bantry Bay and Surrey, an unraced five-year-old son of High Chaparral and three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva.

"Makybe Diva didn't win until she was four so we think this horse might have just needed time as well," Rogerson said.

"Assign has only had 20 starts and was fourth to Winx in the Turnbull last spring. He's won a Herbert Power. My Bantry Bay is a beautiful big horse and Lloyd said he's always liked him, but he's had a few feet problems along the way."

Gallante and Assign have already contested three Melbourne Cups between them and Rogerson believes each of his purchases can prosper with the change of environment in New Zealand.

"We flew to Melbourne last Monday and spent the day with Lloyd at Mount Macedon," he said. "We've bought five horses off Lloyd and we think this will be a great lift for New Zealand racing.

"We've got a couple of genuine Melbourne Cup hopes among them. We're sure these horses will only help our staying ranks. Our Oaks and Derby horses are strong, but our older staying horses are a bit thin on the ground."

All five horses arrived in New Zealand on Thursday and Rogerson has already sold four of the six shares he is offering in the partnership.

"I've put a partnership together," he said. "I didn't want to split the five horses up because this way it covers the risk for shareholders if one or two of them don't come up."

I'd be pretty sure that 4000m barrier trial was to get him fit for the race tomorrow Carioca. 9 month to  'freshen' him then hit the ground running.Big smile

He'll run imo, probably weighting up the o/s raiders (if any) all his other imported hopes have their feet up waiting for spring to be sprung, could a nice race for Ace High btw.

All I know is not to take early odds on anything from that stable. Looks like it’s going to be a pretty thin race. The Oz Cup horses and I can’t see anything in Sydney 2400 WFA. Looks the perfect race for him but I’ll believe it when I see it.

He’s said numerous times Almandin isn’t a WFA or at least alluded to it.. Almandin is the stables premier horse because Nick and Lloyd have trained him for over a year now, whilst others are mostly Aidens progeny.. likes to keep him safe for Cup

Most would probably agree in vintage years but you don't have to be a "WFA" horse in this country if you're a decent stayer. Arguably might have won the Australian Cup with a clear run, at a distance well short of his best.

Which trainers are they ?

How much say do you think Australian Bloodstock have in the placement of their horses ?

Like ALL trainers, Liam Howley does as he is told.

I don't understand why Lloyd stirs up so much angst here yet Stan Johnstone in Qld doesn't worry anyone, tall poppy syndrome I guess.

I’d say it’s reverse tall poppy- I would like the training genius behind the wins of iconic races like Melbourne Cup to be recognised as the trainer, not an interchangeable middle man.

Interesting runner entered for Lloyd in the Irish Derby this weekend named Latrobe. Another 3yo NH horse trained by Joseph O'Brien for the Cup this year?

Because nobody even knows who Stan Johnstone is.
People just don't like bullgelati.

The stable has an interesting entrant in the BM78 over 2400m at Sandown on Wednesday.

An Irish horse called STREETCAR TO STARS, a rising 8yo by Sea The Stars, who has a couple of black type placings back in Ireland in a 5 start career.

Lloyd imported him to Australia way back in October 2014.......so what on earth has the horse been doing for the past 4 years?

Doesn’t turn 8 Until April

Fair chance he's had a number of races down here, just none officially

And win he did at 17/1. We wont be seeing Latrobe downunder any time soon unless he makes a stud visit.

It was a Coolmore boat race with the three up front pretty much keeping their positions throughout the running. Saxon Warrior had every chance trailing the first two with cover and in third place he remained.  SW simply doesn't stay 2400m IMO. Back to ten furlongs for him and a race like the Juddmonte at York.

Probably understandable to run out of condition late first up over 2400m for 203 weeks

RESIGNED to almost certainly being without last season’s Melbourne Cup stars Rekindling and Johannes Vermeer, owner Lloyd Williams’ search for replacement spring firepower will turn to Flemington on Saturday.

Rekindling and Johannes Vermeer, last year’s Cup quinella, are unlikely to be seen until the end of the spring carnival — if at all — after suffering minor setbacks.

The pair’s absence means six-time Cup-winning owner Williams will now rely on familiar and unseen stock.

Sir Edwin Landseer, a Galileo four-year-old, is first emergency in the 2000m Allsop Handicap.

Exemplar, a lightly raced five-year-old who has been placed at Group 2 and 3 level in Ireland, is in the 1700m VRC Members Handicap.

Belgravia, who has form around Rekindling in Ireland, has been scratched from the same race.

Despite the likelihood of Rekindling and Caulfield and Melbourne Cup placegetter Johannes Vermeer both being absent until late in the carnival, Macedon Lodge still has enviable options.

There is a chance Irish Derby winner Latrobe, trained by Joseph O’Brien in Ireland, could fly the flag for Williams and his co-owners in either the Cox Plate or Melbourne Cup.

Almandin, the 2016 Cup winner, remains a chance to contest the Cup again. Williams’ trainer Liam Howley will saddle imports Kilimanjaro and Crocodile Rock in the 2500m O’Connell Handicap at Flemington on Saturday.

After suffering minor set backs.

That is bad luck for the horses but serves Williams right for throwing away a lucrative autumn for no good bloody reason.

Bizarre story.

Some people would have been happy.

In Bacchus Marsh, Dosen used the victim’s credit card to buy more than $2000 worth of goods at a petrol station, including purchases for other customers.

Plan Ciel & Yogi were obviously great runs in the last at Caulfield today.

But I thought HARRISON ran a very good race in finishing 4th over a distance massively short of his preferred trip.

His form back in the UK over 2400m+ was actually pretty good around the lines of St Michel, Dal Harrild & Housesofparliament.

Maybe this guy could be Lloyd’s ‘sleeper’ for the Cups.

I’ve had a little go at HARRISON at big odds for both the AJC Metropolitan & for the Melb Cup.

But even if he doesn’t measure up to those races, I think he’s Lloyd’s best chance today at MV.   Excellent run when resuming over 1600m beaten only 1.1 lengths by PLAN CIEL and the step up to 2040m now. Drawn well and has weight advantage over main rivals.

Haven't had a winner since May. Still to early for Lloyds horses to hit form for mine. With the two stable heavy weights out for most of the spring will be interesting to see if any of the current cattle measures up over the next month or so.

Not that Lloyd would be concerned. He will just buy something that O'Brien has entered.

Lloyd will just keep throwing money until he buys another cup.

Lloyd’s ranks are looking a bit thin for the Melb Cup this year.

With doubts over LATROBE (7th in order of entry) making the trip down under, the only other horse he’s presently got qualified is THE TAJ MAHAL (23rd).

His next highest ranked horse is VENICE BEACH at 51st.

The likes of HOMESMAN & co are going to have to lift over the next month to make it 3 Cups in a row for the Navy + White Armbands.

His recent sales suggest to me that he is taking this year off, and readying for next year.

Williams bolsters Cup numbers

Six-time Melbourne Cup-winning owner Lloyd Williams could be one of the big winners out of the Federal Government's decision to allow international horses out of the Werribee quarantine centre a day earlier than is normal policy.

Williams, who is aiming at securing a third-consecutive Melbourne Cup win next month, confirmed on Wednesday that he had purchased 50 per cent of the Aidan O'Brien-trained Cliffs Of Moher and 100 per cent of stablemate Yucatan.

The Melbourne Cup fortunes of both horses could hinge on them running on Caulfield Guineas Day on October 13, the day they are scheduled to be released from quarantine.

Cliffs Of Moher, who is currently sixth in line for a Melbourne Cup start with 56.5kg, is expected to take the same path to the Melbourne Cup as did last year's runner-up Johannes Vermeer, who kicked off his Australian stint with a Caulfield Stakes run before backing up into the Caulfield Cup a week later and then onto the Melbourne Cup 17 days after that.

Yucatan, who is 72nd in order with just 52kg in the Melbourne Cup, is expected to try and clinch a Cups berth via the G2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) on Guineas Day.

The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources confirmed on Wednesday morning that it would allow the 24 horses currently serving their quarantine period to be released on Caulfield Guineas Day after 13 days instead of the compulsory 14.

Nineteen of them had to sit on the tarmac at Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates for nearly 20 hours last weekend due to a cracked windscreen and they did not arrive in Melbourne from Europe until Sunday, which left just 13 days until the Caulfield Guineas meeting.

Williams has a handful of locals aiming at the Cups including 24th-placed The Taj Mahal, as well as Underwood Stakes winner Homesman, who needs to run top four in the Caulfield Cup to qualify for a run in the big one at Flemington.

However, Williams' Melbourne Cup hand could strengthen noticeably depending on which horses currently in quarantine in Europe step onto the plane for Melbourne late next week.

He already has the Irish Derby winner Latrobe in quarantine and may yet be involved in the ownership of O'Brien's trio of Idaho (ninth in order), Rostropovich (19th) and the unqualified The Pentagon.

None of those sold were contenders this year anyway, hence why they were sold. Lloyd wants to won the cup every year!

Only Midterm left in the cup from the Howley team and he needs to win the Lexus Saturday, he's on the edge of even getting a run, of course he also has Yucatan and Cliffs of Moher with AOB so still has a good hand, just won't have a quarter of the field like the last couple of years.

And Afros that is why I said he is taking this year off.

I do not believe either of those O'Brien horses will win, they might run well, but if Lloyd was serious about this year he would have run Midterm in the Bart Cummings, and not the Metrop, and they would not have sent The Taj Mahal around in the Caulfield Cup. I think Lloyd knows that his Australian trained horses were not up to it.

He is relying on the two of AOB's, and if he wins, all well and good, if doesn't, next year is yet to come.

I don't buy into that idea, Lloyd loves winning the cup,I don't think he'd purposely take a year off, he has a runner in the Metrop every year anyway so Midterm running there is not unusual.
