51kg in the Mackinnon on Sat Hoping Yendall can nick off on the turn and he gaps them by 5 with the light weight.

On at $7/$2.62. Also on Folkswood at $5. I think one wins and Cliff will prove mighty hard to run down.
He will need all of the weight relief though, don't read too much into it, I have this conversation on here all the time. Weight for age is weight for age - it's not a benefit or a luxury or cheating the handicapper. It's weight relief because they need it.
Look at Shoals. I backed her, yes. And the weight scenario is part of the equation. But she fell in. Otherwise 3yos would win all WFA races they compete in and the scale would be thrown out. It certainly helps though when they can race on speed or lead.

Looks a decent chance in a weak WFA field. I'm backing Cliff & Gingernuts. There looks to be plenty of speed on paper (usual for a 200m WFA race), so i'm risking Folkswood from the wide barrier.

In theory a top 3yo at wfa against a moderate wfa field sounds a good idea, but is he a top 3yo? The filly flogged him. Ace High flogged the colts he beat.

May run a place, but can’t see him winning.. don’t think he’s that good and he’s been fortunate with tracks playing to his advantage

I wouldn't know how many 3yos have competed in this race, but I know you'd likely count them on one hand. The only two of note I can recall in recent memory are Casual Pass and Seaburge.
Seaburge ran a good 2nd to Awesome Rock - no star but a multiple G1 WFA winner and particularly effective at Flemington 2000m - and Casual Pass won. Seaburge had only won a 2yo maiden and the VRC Sires, before running 2nd in the Caulfield Guineas i.e. he was nothing special and has proven as much since. Casual Pass, who I believe was a serious horse but for the breakdown, had won a Geelong maiden in the same prep he won the Mackinnon, and, while he was a leading 3yo, he was winning the State Stakes and Norman Robinson - fairly comparable to Cliffs Edge who won the Norman Robinson equivalent.
My point being these two were hardly dominant, star 3yos. Same applies for the Cox Plate winners - Shamus Award couldn't beat his peers, So You Think had won a Gloaming and was beaten a mile in the Caulfield Guineas, Savabeel a Spring Champion winner who was later beaten in the Derby. I think a lot has to do with it being a 2000m race - anything can happen as we are often weak for depth at that distance in WFA ranks and the 3yos who can win a G1 WFA race over 2000m won't necessarily be dominant by the time they get there as they've probably been beaten by 3yos with more speed.
Cliff's Edge has come into his own once stepped up in trip - a lot to do with his racing style, but also his ability to cruise at a good speed and kick off it. Perfectly suited to 2000m WFA - maybe not so at Flemington where leaders have a far inferior strikerate compared to all other tracks.
Re Aloisia, I can't knock him for being belted by her. She's a star, we all know that. He did the same to the rest of the field in the Vase, including two horses who weren't beaten all that far by Ace High in the Derby.
His biggest danger is if the pressure is on start to finish. He will handle some early pressure if they then back off and let him do his thing. But if they make him work, then go again mid-race or earlier than normal, it will be very hard for him to do it at both ends like it would be for any other leader in this race - 3yo or otherwise.

If he improves like he did into last prep he will be nigh on unbeatable. Sometimes a bit wary of these middle distance that produce great runs over unsuitable distances early. Sometimes flattens them a bit. Ditto Ace High. They have got the runs on the board though and though the margin wasn’t great that looked pretty comfortable.

I watched a show called Winning Post on CNN the other night, they done the show at a stud farm in South Africa, low and behold out comes Canford Cliffs for the camera, looked magnificent, rich in colour and glowing with health, how come we lost him? today his son ran 1200 in 1-8-93, that's a v/g horse time, looks like his dad too .

They are what they are..racehorses, and this one's a little above the average imo, if the programme fits into his fitness schedule take it, that's what it's there for, it's the trainers call, no good to die wondering when it's on your doorstep.

Djebel, correct me if I'm wrong, thinks the way we campaign our horses is silly. In Europe they spread races over a season so that horses are generally kept at their preferred distance range, rather than the staggered approach of our carnivals that sees a horse like Ace High kicking off in a 1200m race he can't win.
Look at Cliffs Edge's sire, Canford Cliffs- pretty much exclusively run at a mile after his juvenile days, in races spread over a season.
He has a point.

Because he's going better, has had a better prep for this, and this isn't a 4 horse field at Moonee Valley where she can box seat and sneak up the rail with her turn of foot.
This will likely be pace on first 400 then back right off and brakes go on. Half the field will cop horses in their laps, some horses overracing, and most of the field eager to settle off the speed and get their horse relaxing to ensure they see out a strong mile.
Cliff out of all that scrimmage and doing the racking and stacking before winding up and making it hard for something to catch him. With even luck Grunt can run him down but I'm not sure there's an even chance he gets even luck on what I'm seeing unless they burn him early.

Haha very true. I'm not so concerned by one run into it for a horse of her quality and a genuine miler. For me it's more a question of is she fit enough for second up into a G1 mile here - her trial and first up run tell me that's a risk. She has bigger fish to fry in the Sydney autumn and I feel they've been ambitious that she's good enough to beat a horse like Cliffs Edge when underdone here.

Guineas was always on the program but Aloisia's main aim is Sydney. Deane Lester mentioned one particular race but I can't recall which. Vinery then Oaks? She goes well second up but hasn't looked quite there as Sunline said.
Plenty of get back run on horses in this race, might be a boon for on pacers like Cliff's Edge.

You can't ride them like that at Flemington... The splits will be interesting. .

Given no chance there. They were always going to roll forward but Addictive Nature and Levendi fixed his little red wagon. Pity.

So Bailey has called J Allen into the room and asks " were you the pacemaker for the stablemate", Allen replies " this is not a maiden in the bush, this is a G1 lol, of course not,Cliffs Edge runs unconfirmed first 1000 in 58-92, with 2 splits OF 10-76, and 11-33, , straightens up 3 in front and bang into a 40 kph headwind , its has to be a forget run , imo the best horse won the race, it's just such a shambles when these two race clubs can't come together for one really competitive GNS, they are the pits when it comes to common sense, rant over!

The 22sec from the 1400 to the 1000m spelt the end for Cliff. The winner went forward too and had the perfect sit 1 out , with the field spread out. The heavily backed runner up improved on his previous .
I split the sides laughing at their benchmark ratings . When Grunt beat Cliffs Edge previous they gave Grunt a rating of 69 . Peaceful State 3.5L away they gave him 77 (Why) Yesterday they gave Grunt 84, Peaceful State 77 ????? My ratings Grunt 69.5 Peaceful State 69 = Doesn't that make more sense. Bring Me Roses 65.5 etc.

i think Cliff's Edge has a more suitable race, the Alister Clark Stakes at MV Friday night. He has placed over the course to Aloisia. Will be an interesting Race, especially with the early pace in question.

Geez hard seeing him get beaten tonight. The only on pace runner in the field. Just has to go at his cruising speed and no one will best fast enough to run him down.

Agreed. Very short but it wins. J Mott is such a smooth jockey. He's all about timing and rhythm. I'm sure he'll rate it well. What was that gelati from J Allen last start?

J Allen just lost thr plot last time usually a vety good jcokey though.
Agreed with Mott he is very smooth when in front and knows when to lift the tempo when needed.

Punters see no pressure whatsoever on him early which means Astoria and Levendi will have to run good late sectionals to beat him. Not interested at the price but if he gets to 1.80+ (possibly tote) I might be

This horse will always be extremely hard to beat on the short straights due to his cruising speed.. Rosehill, MV, Caulfield.. just run him there

Perfectly rated by Mott so no-one would bother trying to take the lead. Good job those who got in early. Looked a treat in the parade, almost asleep.
Belfast was good enough late also whereas Astoria ran as his form suggested.

Might not have the highest ceiling but you know what you’re going to get and he keeps giving it to you. Puts a slice of honour into the game, a horse like this.

He’s as tough as they come. Reminds me of horses from 20-30 years ago, they don’t make them like that anymore.
They’re unsure what to do with him now, Sydney or give him a break.

Reminds me of Weir's other 'limited' horse Stratum Star. They'll be happy to emulate him I reckon.

They'd be mad not to have a crack at the Rosehill Guineas before a spell. The horse is a deadset 2000m horse.

Opened 1.85 wow. Took some of that quickly. I havr rated him 1.40 in this field. Is a genuine Group 1 horse and rest are benchmarkers to be.

I saw the $1.75 with Tab after they opened $1.85 and thought he wins but I’m just buying money so left it. Then I saw the $1.85 with 365 and nailed some of it for an interest at Caulfield!

Bahahahahahaha, you blokes are Red Hot.
Blaming greedy owners, and a Jockey who last rode the Colt a month ago in a Gr1 mind you, beaten under 3lengths, against competition up to a 106 rating, and first time on the opposite leg!. What about putting a little bit on a trainer who couldn't get the Colt to beat a group of 57-69 raters, and couldn't work out that it should have been in a paddock!. If went around again in a fortnight and snapped a cannon, you'd be blaming the on-course Vet. fiddlesticks
