But it's not only the senators themselves that are dimwits- why doesn't someone in the Parliament bureaucracy check these things? The Parliament could be full of double agents for all they know.

You have to produce birth certificates for many purposes, not sure why they don't impose that requirement.

Sounds ambiguous.

Are you a citizen of any other country?

Is that exclusively or as well as Australia?

The constitution disqualifies potential candidates from election if they hold dual or plural citizenship

The former Queensland senator was tearful when she apologised to her constituents for her oversight.

In a statement, Ms Waters said she had not visited Canada since leaving as a baby and believed she had naturalised to Australia.

She sought legal advice after Mr Ludlam's resignation and said she was shocked and saddened by the result.

"I was devastated to learn that because of 70-year-old Canadian laws I had been a dual citizen from birth, and that Canadian law changed a week after I was born and required me to have actively renounced Canadian citizenship," she said.

"It is with a heavy heart that I am forced to resign as senator for Queensland and co-deputy leader of the Australian Greens, effective today.

Piss them off, record a conviction for fraud, fine them, and stamp their papers never to represent again.

They were both previously challenged and put on notice publicly about their fraud, and both chose to run the gauntlet.

Game over, you lose Thumbs Down.

It is rumoured there are a number of others from all over the spectrum that may have problems with dual citizenship. It is up to Bookshelves Brandis to determine what happens to ''offenders'', so I would think with the govt having a one seat majority, it will depend on whether there are any lower house Liberals as to the punishment. Maybe like the travel rorts they will just do nothing or give people the opportunity to update their details.

There is a sitting National Party govt minister who is in trouble under the same section 44 of the Act but not citizenship. It is the same clause that forced Bob Day out of his Senate seat.

You cannot nominate for the Senate or the House of Representatives if you are

*  disqualified by section 44 of the Constitution

That advice is at the top of the list on the Electoral Commission's nomination guide for candidates, followed by detailed instructions to read the electoral backgrounder on constitutional disqualifications.

Easier than you might think. My sister is going through the process for her and her 2 adult kids. A year into the process and neither kid has had any involvement in the process My sister has done everything, and is just awaiting final approval now. Getting a passport will be different as you have to attend interviews yourself but getting citizenship not so

Plausible that a mother would obtain citizenship of another country for their adult child without ever telling them? Plausible that they would neglect to tell them when they became aware that they intended to run for parliament?

That sounds insanely implausible to me. It could only occur with a collective, family madness.

The remedy is simple.

We should make dual citizenship illegal.Thumbs Up

If you are an Aussie and want to be a citizen elsewhere - good luck, off you go, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way!

... rescind your Australian Citizenship and all of the benefits that go with it ... simple!

Likewise, if you apply and are lucky enough to be granted Aussie Citizenship (and the test needs to be MUCH tougher) you must immediately rescind any other citizenship.

You are either here to stay, or a visitor, simple, easy, no confusion for dumb politicians.Big smile

Sorry this party in one I would never vote for anyway.  They think they are right on so many things which break people.  A cousin in the country on 25 acres has been told to fence a creek as the sheep might poo in it!  Um, the sheep need to drink and it rains and the poo is in the creek anyway.  They don't live in the county but think they know how everyone should live!

Well they don't.  Like the rest of us they muddle along and can't see the hurt they are causing.

This is so sad as so many things need to be done and they concentrate on the mundane stupid rules which are breaking people.

I'm sick of this modern world.  I wan't to go back to when we helped each other went times got tough.  When we didn't judge someone because their house was simple and they didn't have a car.  When we could trim back a tree without being taken to court.

Every time they think up a new law things just get worst!  Don't judge people unless you've lived their life and struggled through every day with them.  We all have our good points and bad but you just have to let people be different (well not the murdering types I agree) and live on a house boat, in a tree, underground etc.

And we also have to remember the accidents we have before judging that a parent already heartbroken over a childs accident may of only turned away for a split second.  I've done that with mine and luckily didn't pay a heavy price.  Some of the things they tell me they got up to scare the living daylights out of me - but I didn't know at the time.  I got lucky.  Don't jump on someone who didn't have that luck.  But the modern texts etc seem to jump on and have their say about things they know next to nothing about.  They drive people to suicide who are already broken.

Sorry to sound so down but boy the wrong people just keep getting stomped on these days.  I know I can't help them all,  I know I'm powerless, but that doesn't make the feeling go away.  I'm crying inside for a friend who is totally broken at the moment and the modern world couldn't care less about her.  But unfortunately I'm not built that way.

Quite the opposite- they are miserable gits. Correct me if I'm wrong- this may have been corrected since I last paid attention but then the Pom policy was to pay the pension to those living overseas not indexed to inflation- e.g. you start on the 1983 rate of pension you're on the 1983 rate of pension for life. So you're going backwards every year

For a while thought the Red Terror was the most inappropriate politician in Australia. But after the un-argued and unpopular decentralisation move of APVMA to his own electorate, then Canavan and lastly Murray Darling, Barnaby Joyce must surely now wear the undisputed Crown.  Dead

If the Italians can produce his application, and it is unsigned, it appears a significant "clerical error".

SENATOR Matt Canavan has been listed on the Registry of Italians Residing Abroad and Italian voting forms were automatically sent to him at his mother’s address for the past 10 years.

But the rising LNP star, who resigned from Cabinet on Tuesday due to the dual citizenship scandal, yesterday reiterated he has never received or even viewed a ballot.

Laurie Oakes says he believes Canavan, on the basis it would be futile to lie, when the facts are bound to come out.

I loved the Black African stand up comedy man who said he didn't agree about the good old days .
He said, " as he was Black if you go back,    he wouldn't have been there earning , he would have been up for auction " .

Give the benefit of doubt, but some stories are too far fetched to believe.
I can't see any judge finding in his favour.

I'm confused. Is it a document not requiring the prospective citizen's signature, or a document left unsigned which the Italians let go anyway, or a document where Mum forged the signature?

Roberts seems confident that he did nothing wrong.

He has also requested a formal independent review of eligibility of ALL MPs, PLUS, all FORMER MPs who are receiving a parliamentary pension ... now THAT would be an interesting can of worms, don't we think???Embarrassed

The ALP have said they would not support any such review ... why not?Confused

Might find that we could balance the budget very quickly ...
