Hi all,

Reading on Racenet today about the Inglis Sales and a filly bought by Sir Owen Glenn and there was mention that Criterion had issues in his first season. I can't find any news or reference to any issues. Going by the Australian Stud Book he only served 65 mares.

Also found out that the 2015 Blue Diamond Prelude winner by Starspangledbanner, Of The Brave is dead. I remember he had a bad run in the Blue Diamond win by Pride Of Dubai, but also heard nothing about the colts passing.

Can anyone kindly shed any light on these above topics. Any information would be appreciated!

Cheers
SF

I heard that Criterion was shooting blanks, so that would be why he didnt serve many mares.
Suppose it was true.

With Of The Brave, and i could be completely wrong so don't take this as gospel, but i think i remember hearing something like, he got inured in a race, and they tried for some days afterwards to save him, but had to put him down because of his injuries.  I'm pretty sure he wasn't put down on raceday.

Judging from the info on studbook , could be as little as 35 in foal out of 65 mares served, or less .

Of the Brave had a knee infection but after six weeks of treatment at Werribee equine he had to be put down

Thanks re Of The Brave. Never read anything about his loss :( Hopefully they can get Criterion sorted out re fertility, was a great racehorse on his day.

In his first season, Criterion covered 70 mares, 66 mare returns show 14 live foals.  12 of those are parentage verified, 2 are still pending and one of those was covered by Sebring after she was covered by Criterion, so fair to say he ended up with 13 foals from 70 mares.

So far season 2 looks like this:  27 mares covered, 20 returned, 12 foals.  BUT when you look into them, 10 of the 12 were covered by other stallions after Criterion.  So, 2.  2 foals.

Bet he throws a good one.

22.7% in 2016 at $35,750. Straight away service fee switched to 'private' on the website but really it's just foal on arrival.

Hopefully pulls a starspangledbanner and ups that strike rate. Would really like him to succeed. Winner over 1100m and also ran 3rd in a Melb Cup

Depends what the issue is. If its because he was given something while racing, they usually take a few seasons to come right. If its just genuinely low sperm count, they can only hope nursing him along may increase it.
