I would lay 4 of the 1st 5 on TAB's market-Yankee,Hartnell,Sacred Elixir and Prized Icon. To have any of these(apart from Hartnell) less than 50/1 is criminal.

I was impressed with Sacred Elixir in the Derby.

I was impressed with Kinema today.

Of Lloyds I like Morning Mix and Our Century.

Of course you are not going to take anything short this far out.

I've not heard any news that Qewy, Oceanographer, Francis of Assisi or Second Wave are staying.

Go back the first page of the 2016 Melbourne Cup thread which was opened immediately after the 2015 edition.  In the early market you have to go down to the 12th horse in order to find one that actually ran in the race - Bondi Beach at $26.00

Most of horses in the market right now, will be retired, injured or worse on cup day 2017

Anyone betting right now on next years cup is a mug

If that is a fact the Sydney Cup should be a good race.

Be interesting to see how they map their racing program to the Sydney Cup.

No way will i be touching the early market, for exactly the reason Lordy stated.

I actually went through that list a couple of weeks ago, i think bondi beach was going to be the only value bet, with a couple of others borderline, otherwise you either got unders or, like 95% of them, didn't run.

I'd be curious about a horse like Kia Ora Koutou, Authoritarian if they were insane odds.

Yankee Rose will not stay. Prized Icon will not stay. Hartnell will have too much weight.

Looking at the top hopes in tomorrow's Sydney Cup in the Betfair Melbourne Cup market.

Last price matched:

Big Duke $55
Penghlai Pavilion $100
Polarisation $100
Harlem $95

What price these if they win or run well tomorrow?

Could be a couple from this that could end up in Melbourne Cup.

Red Verdon is same connection as Red Cadeaux, first race of season.

The second, Duretto, has lots of German breeding,so may appeal to an Australian buyer, I'd have thought.

I'm fairly sure I heard Saeed Bin Suroor say that Beautiful Romance will go back for the Melbourne Cup again, but I can't find any confirmation of that, so could just be my dodgy memory.

Charlie Appleby said that they'll sort out his Australian raiders in July.

In he meantime, this was a nice performance by one of his, which will be aimed at European Pattern races in the meantime.  Appleby said that they hadn't been thinking about the Melbourne Cup or Australia for Frontiersman, but maybe this performance may've changed his mind.

Or did Victoria just fly that story to try to take publicity away from NSW Racing?

An example of if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

something about them wanting to attract more Japanese, and more Japanese betting.

What they could do, is have a 12 furlong G1 WFA 3 weeks before the Caulfield Cup, so that it would be 5 weeks before the Melbourne Cup.  5 weeks between races is a nice gap for stayers.

not sure if it has been noted too much but a Horse has won the last 6 out of 8 cups so with that stat unless you have nuts intact I am ruling a line through them and backing horses only at 4 & 5 yrs of age with balls.
i SUPPOSE Its not a stat you can sproose too much but with the amount of horses winning the cup why is it that we dont have stallions  siring future cup stars and they still come from overseas, Llyod would be best to answer this one, oh of course you can spend a Million to get a fit ready to race horse as opposed to try and breed one over 4 or 5 years makes good economical sense, money buys a cup!

anyway back on topic a HORSE will win the cup.

Purchased by Australian Bloodstock and will be coming to Melbourne for both races. Will be trained by D Weir

Posted By: Magnolian Khan
Date Posted: 16 Aug 2017 at 10:12am
Talented Japanese stayer Admire Deus remains on a path to the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups but will now fly the Australian flag.

The multiple Group Two winner is second favourite ($15) for the Melbourne Cup, where he may go head-to-head with former stablemate Albert – the horse central to his sale.

Australian Bloodstock pulled off the purchase this week in Japan after convincing Riichi Kondo, owner of 2014 Caulfield Cup winner Admire Ratki, to part with one of his premium stayers.

Their first offer was turned down before Kondo’s organisation elected not to take two stayers to Australia and picked Albert over Admire Deus as their sole competitor.

“At that point, they came back to us and said if you’re still interested, they would sell this horse and it evolved from there,” Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett told Sky Sports Radio.

It sets the scene for a clash between the former stablemates, with Australian Bloodstock and new trainer Darren Weir buoyant about a run towards the spring’s two big staying handicaps on October 21 and November 7.

The Australian-bound seven-year-old had the better of his stablemate in the lightning-quick Group One Tenno Sho in April, finishing fourth.

William Hill
Japan’s stand-out stayer, Kitasan Black, won the two-mile race in 3 min 12.5 secs – almost four seconds faster than the Melbourne Cup record set in 1990.

“They do run on quite fast tracks and the tempo is set up to run those fast times but they’ve still got to do it,” Lovett said.

“Clearly, Admire Deus runs the two miles and he does profile as the right horse (for the Melbourne Cup) but as we all know there is a lot to do to get a horse here and to race travelling horses.”

If something were to go wrong, Lovett says Admire Deus will be saved for next year.

“But certainly, at this stage, all roads will lead to Melbourne,” he said.

Australian Bloodstock also owns Melbourne Cup favourite Red Cardinal who is with Andreas Wohler who trained Protectionist for them to win the 2014 Cup.

Weir has sent staff to Japan to begin preparations for the spring carnival campaign.

Admire Deus is expected to arrive in Melbourne in late September or early October.

They have a very good process with buying overseas stock. Something seems to go awry with applying that process to purchasing yearlings though.

^ Yearings are a lottery.
Tried horses have been exposed and they find the ones that can improve over time. Plenty of work involved including stride analysis, handicap ratings, age, distances they've won/raced over etc etc, then they can ustilise the processes used with yearlings and eliminate the ones that fail vet tests.

Current Melb Cup favourite, RED CARDINAL, goes around at 1.10 am AEST in the Kergolay over 3000m.

Apparently if he wins, he'll be down here for the Herbert Power Hcp and then the Melb Cup.

I saw Red Cardinal's run, looked a bit dour and raced like a 3200m horse.

The other thing to keep in mind is had he won thst race then his rating may have gone up which could of meant more weight for the Melbourne Cup.

I suspect he will be running without winning in whatever he races in leading in to the Cup.

CUP PROGRAM STILL ON FOR RED CARDINAL
August 21, 2017 5:21 pm.AAP
Red Cardinal racehorse
2017 Melbourne Cup favourite Red Cardinal (in front).
Red Cardinal has been displaced as the Melbourne Cup favourite following his fifth in the Prix Kergorlay at Deauville but his owners remain upbeat.

Trained in Germany by Andreas Wohler for Australian Bloodstock, the combination successful with Protectionist in the 2014 Cup, Red Cardinal will still head to Australia.

He is now on the second line of TAB betting at $21 with Godolphin’s Hartnell and Japanese horse Admire Deus, a recent acquisition for Australian Bloodstock, at $15.

Australian Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett said the shifty track at Deauville on Sunday (Monday AEST) was a factor in Red Cardinal’s performance and the plan was to contest the Group Two Herbert Power Stakes won by Protectionist on his way to the Cup.

“On face value, it probably looked a bit disappointing,” Lovett told Melbourne’s RSN 927.

“But Andreas wasn’t overly concerned. They were a bit concerned before the race. The track was very shifty and chopped out a little bit.

“He was always going to get back and there was no speed, typical of those races in France. They jog to the corner and sprint home.

William Hill
“But I would have liked to have seen him pick up a bit better, but as I say, Andreas wasn’t overly concerned, so I’ll take reassurance from that.”

Lovett said he and others involved in the horse would head to Japan this week to see Admire Deus who is at $15 for the Caulfield Cup with Hartnell the TAB’s $9 favourite.

“We think a bit of him, given he’s got that profile through those staying races in Japan,” Lovett said.

Lovett’s company also races the Darren Weir-trained Group-winning stayer Big Duke, a $21 chance in the Melbourne Cup.

He resumed with a midfield finish over 1600 metres at Caulfield on Saturday, beaten less than two lengths.

“We were thrilled with him. Darren’s been really happy with him leading into his first-up run,” Lovett said.

“In a pretty decent race, to finish just on their heels, he’s in for a very good prep.”

Nominations are really quite disappointing.

I was hoping there'd be one or two that knock Order Of St George from the honour of top weight.

Good for you, hopefully exciting times ahead. The bookies have it well up in their early markets, so hopefully that assessment is proved justified.
We will follow with interest.

Only the best for top Melbourne Cup hope before Melbourne raid

https://plus.google.com/107245497963057655283?rel=author" rel="nofollow - Brad Waters  - 30 Aug 2017

If training conditions mean anything, Melbourne Cup fancy Admire Deus has a distinct advantage over his local rivals before he makes the trip to Australia.

Syndicator Australian Bloodstock completed a deal to buy Admire Deus for the 2017 Melbourne Cup from Japanese owner Riichi Kondo, the owner of Caulfield Cup winner Admire Rakti, after his fourth in the Group I Tenno Sho Spring (3200m) in April.

Admire Deus's effort against the best stayers in Japan has him at $21 in Sportsbet's latest Melbourne Cup market while Albert, who finished fifth in the same race is a $26 chance.

Australian Bloodstock co-founder Luke Murrell said the operation was able to send Admire Deus to one of the world's great thoroughbred properties, Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm to prepare for his Melbourne raid.

Admire Reus has been able to train in perfect conditions irrespective of the weather with Northern Farm hosting both indoor and outdoor uphill gallops to get the seven-year-old fit to travel.

"They have been great to deal with. They have let him stay at Mr Yoshida's farm and have the advice of Mr Yoshida's foremen, which has been terrific," Murrell said.

"Mr Yoshida is in Tosen Stardom with us and he bought a couple of German Oaks winners off us and we have a good relationship with him."

Murrell said Admire Deus's new trainer Darren Weir has started the process of working out the entire after sending a senior member of his staff to Japan to work with the stayer before he goes into quarantine.

"Weiry sent one of his foreman over and we are just trying to learn as much as we can, just about the horse's idiosyncrasies and little habits that might give us an edge," Murrell said.

"We're trying to learn everything and not leave anything to chance."

Murrell said Admire Deus's Melbourne Cup lead-in was not set with Weir to consider the seven-year-old's competitive nature before deciding on his Australian debut outing.

"He'll go into quarantine and be here on the first shipment (in late September)," Murrell said. "There are two possible paths. One would be a Caulfield and a Melbourne Cup.

"The mail on the horse is that he just absolutely gives his all every time he runs so if Darren didn't want to have a complete gut buster with him first-up, Darren could go to a Caulfield Stakes or something shorter and use that as a pipe opener for the Melbourne Cup."

Tiberian seeks to give teaser stallion unlikely Melbourne Cup triumph

Tue 29 Aug 2017

By Andy Stephens

Who said equine romance was dead? One of the most unlikely tales of the turf will be complete if  https://www.racinguk.com/horses/tiberian" rel="nofollow - Tiberian  wins this year’s Emirates Melbourne Cup.

The five-year-old advanced his claims for Australia’s iconic race when winning the Group Two Grand Prix de Deauville under Olivier Peslier on Sunday and is a general 25-1 to land the $6.2 million two-mile contest on November 7.

It is fair to say his connections did not have a Melbourne Cup winner in mind when he was bred.

Indeed, the liaison between his little known sire, Tiberius Caesar, and his dam, Tomasina, was more a marriage of convenience than anything else.

Tiberius Caesar won only one of his 25 races during a five-year career on the racetrack and was once a purchase from an £8,000 claimer. A stallion? The only thing he had going for him was that he had not been gelded.

His principal occupation had long been as a “teaser” for his more popular stablemates such as Derby winner Authorized on the stallion roster at Haras Du Logis, the French establishment which has been home to many Darley sires over the years.

The role of a teaser can be unfulfilling and, no doubt, more than a little frustrating. They merely have to help the dam get in the mood before the stallion is ushered in.

In an attempt to maintain his libido, Tiberius Caesar, was allowed a one-off dalliance with the mare Tomasina.

The result of the union was  https://www.racinguk.com/horses/tiberian" rel="nofollow - Tiberian , who is trained by Alain Couetil and has now won six of his 17 starts. He is set to go into quarantine at Newmarket next month before his date with destiny Down Under.

For part-owner Julian Ince, manager of Haras Du Logis, it has been almost like a dream. "He is running well, and we feel he will like the conditions in Melbourne later in the year," he said.

"We are going to do it the right way. We plan to send him down to Australia on the first shipment and see what unfolds from there."

Now 17, Tiberius Caesar is listed as having one other offspring - the three-year-old Yellow Storm, who won a minor event at Senonnes-Pouance in June.

https://www.racinguk.com/news/nakeeta-and-order-of-st-george-feature-among-melbourne-cup-entries" rel="nofollow - Tiberian featured among a total of 140 horses nominated for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday . Should he win, you fancy his Dad may get more opportunities to show that champions can be produced in the most unlikely of circumstances.

Could he be a Bart Cummings type horse or a Lexus Stakes (Hotham) type horse to get into the Cup field.

On paper he looks like a staying handicapper....hes paying big odds ($151 on Super TAB) but you never know..

For some reason (and i dont know why) Red Cardinal continues to just be in my mind.....so for people who follow overseas racing - what are your thoughtsnon Red Cardinal? Should I be looking at other horses? Is Red Cardinal good enough or not good enough do do well in the Cup?
