Just thought I'd ask the community what their favourite travel destinations and holiday spots were and why. I was reading Nocci's thread on Kangaroo Island which got me thinking.

I personally like going to Hawaii. It's got great weather, very relaxing or you can go off and do so many other things.

I've seen many rave reviews on Vietnam being apparently less touristy than the Balis etc but if anyone is thinking of the latter & wants an elephant experience with happy, well cared for & loved ones this place deserves all the PR it can get: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Elephant-Safari-Park-Taro-Ubud-Bali/272219652810670" rel="nofollow - Elephant Safari Park-Taro Ubud-Bali

A friend wrote this to me on seeing my crying emoji Wink

Gay you wouldn't believe how amazing the elephants were, we went to the elephant sanctuary, all of the elephants there are rescued elephants from places that didn't look after them & abused them, they have 29 in total, 6 of them they have bred at the park, the eldest bred there being 7yo. Every elephant has its own human who looks after it every day, it cost around $150 per person but what you get to do is amazing, we spend around half an hr washing them before then sitting on them in their pool while they have fun splashing about, dunking under the water & squirting water everywhere, then they have a feed while we have breakfast & then they saddle them up & we go for a ride which is a half hr walk through beautiful jungle type walk, then we get to feed them their favourite fruits & vegetables, they are the most amazing animals ever!!!
I was the same as you until a month ago when 1 of the guys from work went to Bali & did it so he told me all about it & I was sold...
The guy who started the sanctuary is an English man who married a Balinese woman, it's amazing, such a great place, the elephants are so happy & they are slowly re-breeding the native elephant population that would have been lost!!!
Unfortunately majority of the elephants in Bali were either killed or majorly malnourished because they were destroying the farmers livelihoods so the killed them or chained them up
Now the elephants get to live in a nice environment where they are looked after & the sanctuary even buys food off all of the local farmers to feed them so it's a win win situation for the elephants.

We want  to do some animal experiences in the South Africa area, you  know the safaris/game parks etc, and want to use the parks and drives that are ethical in their treatment of the animals, and the local community, so if anyone has any suggestions as to how one finds these things out, please let me know.
Sorry to hi-jack , Toll Road .

Heading off to Bali in about 4 weeks for the first time.

Did Vietnam & The Phillipines last year. Vietnam absolutely delightful, will be going back for sure. Phillipines is ok, but won't be going back in the short term. Manila is a nightmare!

Also went to Koh Samaui, an island of Thailand recently, a beautiful place and will be heading back there again next year. Have a few neighbouring countries on the radar as well - Cambodia, Laos etc.

Heading back to England and Europe (Croatia) in 2018 .....

Went there about eight years ago and it was great. If people want to go there I'd be going now, because in 20 years it'll be just like any other island in the Caribbean.

Not snobbery, just wanting to travel in comfort which I think any sensible person should want to do. I made a decision about 5 years ago that I didn't want to travel economy class anymore. I don't (long haul anyway) and anyone willing to put in the effort doesn't have to either.

I won't fly anywhere anymore, they have made economy so bad nowadays it's too painful for me to sit in those cramped conditions, I'd rather drive or sail these days...I've done enough international traveling to last me ten lifetimes anyways, happy to just travel locally in oz now, perhaps if I won the lottery and could pay for first class I'd consider going to a few places I missed earlier in life, but unless that happens count me out..

Like I said Fiddles, anyone willing to put on the effort can fly in those premium cabins. And I'm not talking putting in the effort to work hard and earn a lot of money. You can easily travel to the UK in business class for less than about $600.

it's a terrible position to be sitting in for so long, I am usually totally uncomfortable for the entire journey if I have to sit upright, my legs and back go numb from lack of circulation..old injuries particularly back injury are awful to take with you on long haul flights in economy..

my home studio where I do all my production/media etc I have no chair and the bench all the gear is on is quite high, too high for most arm chairs, so I have to stand to work, it's designed like this on purpose, I have a small IKEA bar stool off to the side so I can rest my legs occasionally but sitting for long periods is the new smoking imo..

I don't drink booze period and I've upped my water intake the last year or so, my eating has changed from 3 meals a day to 2 and one of those is just fruit, usually fruit salad, it's amazing how better you can feel when you shed those annoying few extra kilos, my BMI is coming down closer to 25 all the time..

If you are dieting the easiest one is the 2day/5 day diet. You don't have to sttarve yourself, can eat 600 calories and is said to lower cholesterol, blod sugar, blood pressure. I am not o'weight but recently put on 5 kg suddenly don't know why. Have been doing the diet for 2 weeks and have lost 2 kg so far, it is easy, you don't even feel that you are dieting.

What would a Whale know about air travel ?
Whales spend their time in the sea with no size restrictions placed on them.   Al they have to do is pop up and flick their tail .
Its not the seat width that gets me.   Its the leg room.
Scoring the exist row is brilliant.
Waiting waiting to know who the boilers are ???

Have any of you guys/girls been to any sporting events while on holiday? I've been to the NBA, NFL, & NHL. I really did like all of them but the ice hockey was fantastic. It was so fast and high impact. The NBA game I saw was Sun's v Bulls. It was the first year MJ had retired but we still got to see a lot of the old guns in action Scottie Pippen being one of them. The NFL was good but it took a while to complete with all the stop starts. The tail gate party was pretty good as well Thumbs Up

World's Worst Holiday Horrors

Monday 31st October at 10:53 pm (61 minutes)
Chaos erupts on a cruise liner in the Gulf of Mexico when a fire breaks out, causing massive power loss. Thousands of holidaymakers are stranded on board with food and water running out, backed-up toilets and sewage running down the corridors.

AA have a read of this and watch the YouTube clip. A small croc attacks in the pool at a Zimbabwe resort.
When I lived in the N.T. they said that crocs could travel a fair distance to find a new waterhole or dam. A resort pool is a little different

Darwin Cup/Palmerston Sprint   A blast all week long . Done that one a few times and never get tired of that place.  See so many people you know from other places .
Kalgoorlie Cup was interesting and lots of fun.  Fights all over the place LOL and quite e few in costume similar to the M.C.
Launceston Cup and meeting Slowdown and the Child Bride was great fun.  Shame it rained for the Cup.
French Oaks at Chantilly would have to be the prettiest track and setting I have ever seen, and just trying to work out a bet was quite an experience. The town and Equestrian Museum in what was the original stables of the Chateau are very good.  Thats it you always see at the back side of the track as they race past it.
Royal Ascot , great to have been there but not as much fun as other places.  Would not have gone the 2nd time if Black Caviar hadnt been there .  Too much of a hassle to get from the parade ring to the track to watch the race so you have to decide if you want to watch them parade and the presentation, and watch the race on the big screen, or be trackside to see the race live and miss the other stuff. Unless you are upstairs in a room, but for me thats too far away from the action.
Irish Derby at The Curragh, now there,s a laid back place, and very different the way they go way across this little path thru the middle of the track to get to the start.  I liked the casual atmosphere and getting really close to the horses.
Both tracks at Newmarket.  Different and some serious gradients . Tests of stamina for the horses.
Naas evening meeting. Great fun and amusing watching kids who,s head didnt even top the counter , up at the window putting bets on and running off with a fistfull of tickets .
Lone Star Park, Texas.  Different seeing each horse with its lead pony, and the clerk of the course,,sort of, on her grey with no bridle or halter.  Took us ages to work out what barrier the horses had, and asking a local only got blank looks.  They are gates, and whatever number the horse is in the race book is what gate he jumps from.
Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby.  DONT go if you cant handle crowds.  There were 158 thousand the day we were there, and it was raining.  Can you imagine the state of the port-a-loos ???Sick No hope of getting near a horse and about the only time we saw them was as they went past us on the track.
Keenland but only for trackwork.  very pretty. Would love to go to a race day.
Thats about all I can think of at the moment.
The usual ones here at home of course, lots of country cups.
Might try and fit in a race day in South Africa when we do get there .  Who has been and whats it like ?  Any hints or suggestions ?

Great write up AA. It would be great to go and see all those tracks with all that history. Sounds like in the USA they pull some really big crowds to the big meets
I've been to the races in Hong Kong that was very different with all the high rises around the track It looked awesome at night with all the lights on. I also went to the Wellington Cup in NZ it was very much like going to a big meeting here in Australia
Here is a link to an article with pictures to some of the tracks mentioned, plus some others

I haven't been here but it's just across the causeway from Singapore so no need to stay in Johor. Just make it a day trip when you visit Singapore.

Thanks E&E. If it's that close and there is more to do in Singapore, then that sounds a day trip is the way to go. Is there more to do in Singapore than Malaysia? I've never been to either. The Disneyland is in Hong Kong or just off Hong Kong in China

There is plenty to do and see in Malaysia, probably more than in Singapore to be fair. So this is just my personal opinion that I much prefer Singapore to that southern part of Malaysia. Much safer, cleaner, more modern etc. Thats why I personally would just visit the Legoland attraction as part of a Singapore trip.

I guess it what you've got in mind for your trip. What you said is exactly what other have said to me. That Singapore is a very safe & clean. Have you done the tour of Changi prison? I think that would be good to have on the list.

Haven't done a tour of the prison. I've been to Singapore 5 or 6 times and done most of the tourist things the first time I went. There isn't heaps of them anyway. What brings me back is that I stay with locals in local areas away from tourists. Love being able to eat cheap local food etc rather that the high priced offerings and attractions you get in places like Orchard & Sentosa.

Getting off the beaten track is a good idea. You must really love Singapore to go back that many times Smile I When you get out of the tourist area's I'll bet you can see so much more and interact with the locals a lot better. They say the food is really great in Singapore.

My neighbour,s son and family live and work in Singapore, and he has just come back from a visit, and he was saying how expensive groceries, especially meat, is to buy.
He also said his daughter in law had her jaw X rayed and it cost over $400 !!
He was staggered at the cost of a bottle of Aussie wine, but he said they went to Legoland with his grandson and it was just a day trip . Worth the look he reckoned.
Said the rain hadnt arrived on time , as it usually does, and the humidity was 90% !  OMG !!!

There is no middle ground in Singapore. It's either cheap hawker food, or expensive dining.
I was disappointed with the hawker food in Singa. Went to numerous places in all corners, but found everything to be cooked with far too much oil and with little love. Just a different kind of fast food for me.
Food is much, much better in Malaysia.

Yes there can be quite a difference in quality between hawker centres. Usually go to Whampoa food centre and food is great. If you're in the area go to balastier rd for bak kut teh. One in particular is quite famous for it - forget the name but has photos up all over the walls of all the celebrities who have come to eat there.

No argument about Malaysian food. Definitely better and also cheaper which is a bonus. Last time I was there we went to a place (again local) and shared a full suckling pig for about $60. Fantastic!

Geez Noccy!

Not what I wanted to hear!

Maybe, I should take my ancient surfboard over there and ride those waves all day long?? Mind you, I'd probably only last a wave or two these days!!

Decided to hire a car for 5 days with my partner navigating, will let you know if any corrupt police decide to pull a swifty on us!

We won't be hanging around the Bogans! I can assure you of that!!

Anyway, in all seriousness what you put into a holiday is what you take out of it!

I'm looking forward to this venture good or bad!

Thailand was booked last night for next May for about a month, love it there and can't wait to get back! Burma, the neighbour requires a Visa. Need to sort that out shortly. Plan on spending about 2 weeks on Koh Samui. Absolute paradise there! A favourite spot of mine ......

$53 million upgrade: Great Ocean Road to reopen after landslips

ONE of Victoria’s most popular tourist attractions is to benefit from a $53 million upgrade after being ravaged by bushfires and landslips.

Urgent repairs will be made to the Great Ocean Road near Wye River, including new rock fall netting, retaining walls and armour stone to prevent erosion by waves.

The section of road is due to be reopened to full traffic from Wednesday, having been down to one-lane after heavy rains prompted more than 120 landslides.

The State Government says $53 million will be invested to improve the surface of the famous coastal route, and reduce the risk it will be closed in the future due to landslips.

Closures have already disrupted the visitor economy and operators have been nervous that more would follow heading into the peak season.

New traffic management technology — including electronic traveller information signs, CCTV monitoring devices, real time traffic counters and more signage will also be installed.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan toured the Wye River region on Tuesday, almost a year to the day after the devastating Christmas fires.

This State Government funding is on top of the $50 million the Labor Government is joint funding with the Commonwealth for capital works and maintenance on the Great Ocean Road between Apollo Bay and Allansford.

The work will complement the $2 million emergency project announced by the Government in November to build a concrete wall to stabilise the embankment between Wye River and Separation Creek.

This will allow two lanes to be opened to traffic from Wednesday.

“The Great Ocean Road is one of the nation’s most iconic destinations and Victoria’s top tourism drawcard — we’ll do everything we can to support local communities and attract visitors from all over the world,” Mr Andrews said.

“It’s just not good enough to lock out tourists and locals every time there’s an extreme weather event — we’re doing the work to make sure this beautiful part of our state is always open for business.”

Cheaper airfares to Vietnam. Jeststart to start flying direct into Vietnam offering direct airfares from $159 in a 12 hour sale today

Vietnam just a bargain away with Jetstar to offer direct flights

VICTORIANS will have cheaper access to a rapidly growing tourist market with Jetstar to start flying direct to Vietnam.

The budget airline will fly non-stop between Melbourne and Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, from May and will offer $159 one-way fares in a 12-hour sale today.

Jetstar will be the only low-cost carrier flying direct to Vietnam, with three weekly services from Melbourne and four from Sydney using Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Australia had a big rise in Vietnamese visitors over the past year with Melbourne the top destination.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle welcomed the announcement that is due to be officially made today.

“Vietnam is a growing tourism market for us and I commend Jetstar for initiating a low cost direct route to Ho Chi Minh City,” he said.

The City of Melbourne’s city ambassador program includes two Vietnamese speakers.

Jetstar Group CEO Jayne Hrdlicka said Vietnam was one of South East Asia’s fastest growing holiday destinations.

“Vietnam has the potential to become as popular as Bali or Thailand for Australian travellers,” she said.

“Aussies love exploring its pristine beaches, discovering delicious cuisine and taking advantage of the wide range of experiences the region has to offer.”

“From Ho Chi Minh City, travellers can fly to 15 other destinations within Vietnam on Jetstar Pacific, which offers the same low fares that Australian’s have come to expect from Jetstar.”

Ms Hrdlicka said she expected the new route to boost inbound tourism to Australia.

“In the last 12 months, there has been a 21 per cent increase in visitors from Vietnam to Australia and we expect to see that increase with the introduction of our low fares on the route,” she said.

Flights from Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City will start on May 10 and from Sydney on May 11 subject to regulatory approval.

The sale will run from midday today.

Can recommend Death Valley in Southern California near the border with Nevada. Expected a desert wasteland but was spectacular. Only got to spend a few hours as I was basically driving through but Artists Palate and Zabriskie Point are amazing to see. Furnace Creek the hottest place on earth for some interest. The Joshua Trees by the side of CA190 are very cool too. If you look hard enough you will find the lone Joshua Tree from the U2 album as well although it's dead now.
