Secret Gesture: demoted to third after passing winning post in first PICTURE: Mark Cranham (racingpost.com/photos)Drama as Secret Gesture demoted in Beverly D BY NICHOLAS GODFREY7:20AM 16 AUG 2015 Report: USA, Saturday Arlington Park: Beverly D Stakes (Grade 1) 1m1½f, turf, 3yo+ f/m AS TORRENTIAL rain hit Chicago, a storm came down on Arlington Park as an eventful Beverly D Stakes ended in drama and controversy - and a huge slice of disappointment for Ralph Beckett and Jamie Spencer. http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=811020#topHorseTabs=horse_race_record&bottomHorseTabs=horse_form" rel="nofollow - Secret Gesture passed the post a clear winner, only to get thrown out for alleged interference in the final strides, leaving US-trained http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=807952#topHorseTabs=horse_race_record&bottomHorseTabs=horse_form" rel="nofollow - Watsdachances (Chad Brown/Joe Bravo) as the fortunate winner of the $700,000 contest. With Spencer riding for his old retainer, Sheikh Fahad, Secret Gesture hit the wire a length and a quarter in front of her rivals in the Grade 1 contest. However, she had drifted out a little under a left-handed drive from Spencer, who did the correct thing and switched his stick - but not before Irad Ortiz, on the closing Stephanie's Kitten, had stopped riding and forfeited second place by a neck to the late rally of her Chad Brown-trained stablemate Watsdachances. "I'm sorry there had to be a loser in here, but I do think the stewards made the right call," said Brown, the number one turf trainer in North America. "We were lucky both of our horses fired today." The question for the stewards was whether Secret Gesture did indeed impede Stephanie's Kitten, as Ortiz appeared to exaggerate the effect of the leader's manoeuvre. But the officials adjudged that the US filly had been interfered with and therefore had to demote Secret Gesture. The 9-1 chance Watsdachances, a winner at Navan as a two-year-old in 2012 for original trainer Ger Lyons, encountered precisely none of what little interference there may have been. But under the rules, he had to be promoted to first place once the stewards ruled interference had taken place. Ortiz, who rides Acapulco for Wesley Ward in this week's Nunthrope Stakes, was adamant that Stephanie's Kitten had suffered to a significant degree. "The winner kept coming out and it definitely cost me second," he claimed. Be that as it may, winning jockey Joe Bravo had reason to thank his lucky stars. "You can't make this game up!" he said. "With the rainstorm we got, and they had her ready to run and she just loved the distance." For Spencer, the decision must surely have had echoes of one of the unhappiest moments of his career when the Ballydoyle-trained Powerscourt was disqualified after passing the post first in the Arlington Million in 2004. Racing on rain-softened ground Secret Gesture had tracked the favourite Euro Charline in the early stages before being produced by Spencer after they turned for home. Under a strong drive from Spencer, she was always holding the closing pack - only for the stewards to have their say. http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=845942#topHorseTabs=horse_race_record&bottomHorseTabs=horse_form" rel="nofollow - Euro Charline weakened to fourth under Jose Lezcano, who said: "My filly really broke sharp and never relaxed she just pulled me the whole way and when the other came I tried to give her a kick but she was just too tired." Colm O'Donoghue rode Wedding Vow to finish fifth. "She gave me a great one but she's too good of a mover and the ground was too soft, too deep," said the jockey. The Dermot Weld-trained Carla Bianca was sixth. "This filly likes it very fast and she couldn't get any traction at all," said Pat Smullen. "It's just deep and she wants fast ground. We had lovely position behind the winner and I knew between the two turns I was in trouble." >>The Beverly D. is a Breeders' Cup Challenge 'Win and You're In' race for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

In a dominant performance as the rain started to pour in Chicago, the son of Galileo made all to score by five and a quarter lengths to become Ballydoyle's fourth winner of this $450,000 contest following Ciro (2000), Treasure Beach (2011) and Adelaide (2014). Highland Reel was allowed to set easy fractions (24.53s, 50.09s, 1m14.72s) after being sent straight to the front by Seamie Heffernan and not being put under any sort of pressure, though admittedly he was helped when leading home contender Force The Pass, the Belmont Derby victor, jumped in the air at the gate and missed the break. After that it was plain sailing for Highland Reel, sent off a generous 2.4-1 second favourite. Kicked on from the turn, he won in totally emphatic fashion in the Derrick Smith colours. "There was so little pace in the race, if we couldn't make the lead and then make all, we didn't deserve to win," said O'Brien's on-the-spot assistant TJ Comerford, who said Highland Reel could follow in Adelaide's footsteps with a Cox Plate bid. Seamie Heffernan was having his first ride in the States. "I was hoping to jump and have someone lead me, but when no one went, and he was doing it easily, that was fine," said the jockey. "I couldn't see much pace and he did it easy. I was very confident." Domestic pair Closing Bell and the favourite Force The Pass took second and third, with Italian Derby winner Goldstream meeting the first defeat of his career in fourth place. Also on Saturday Arlington Park: American St Leger (Grade 3) 1m51/2f, turf, 3yo+ European visitors got off to the perfect start at the Arlington International Festival of Racing with a one-two as http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=835819#topHorseTabs=horse_race_record&bottomHorseTabs=horse_form" rel="nofollow - Lucky Speed (Peter Schiergen/Andrasch Starke) struck for Germany, getting the better of Ireland's Panama Hat in the fourth running of this $350,000 event. Both visitors were sensibly ridden in mid-division as the locals set too fast a tempo before Chris Hayes produced the Andy Oliver-trained Panama Hat (racing without Lasix) as they entered the stretch. But although the Irish gelding ran on gamely, he could not hold 3-1 chance Lucky Speed, whose CV features a victory in the German Derby two years ago. The winning margin was three-quarters of a length, with the favourite Hyper four lengths back in third. "We knew he needed more distance and that's what he got today," said jockey Andrasch Starke, winning his first race in the US. Chris Hayes, who rode Panama Hat, said: "We had a lovely smooth trip all the way around and he kicked off the turn but I probably just met a good one on the day."
Saratoga: Fourstardave Hcap (Grade 2) 1m, turf, 3yo+ Beaten a neck in last year's race, 8-1 chance Grand Arch (Brian Lynch/Luis Saez) went one better this time around by the same margin, running down front-runner King Kreesa before holding the late run of Ironicus to claim this $500,000 event.

The Pizza Man flashes home in the Arlington Million PICTURE: Four-Footed PhotosThe Pizza Man delivers in Arlington Million BY NICHOLAS GODFREY8:25AM 16 AUG 2015 Report: USA, Saturday Arlington Park: Arlington Million (Grade 1) 1m2f, turf, 3yo+ A FIVE-STRONG European team were whitewashed in the 33rd running of the Arlington Million, which produced a popular hometown victory for a Chicago-based, Illinois-bred gelding as http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=816547#topHorseTabs=horse_race_record&bottomHorseTabs=horse_form" rel="nofollow - The Pizza Man (Roger Brueggemann/Florent Geroux) brought home the dough. A standing dish at Arlington Park, the six-year-old extended his record at the track to ten wins from 13 starts in the $1 million contest, in which he was making his Grade 1 debut. Available at 14-1 with British bookmakers on Saturday, the winner was just short of a 6-1 shot on the Arlington pari-mutuel, where the diappointing Slumber was narrowly made favourite. Best of the visitors was Irish-trained Elleval, who earned $27,500 for finishing fifth after making late ground from the rear under Pat Smullen. Belgian Bill was seventh but well-fancied Maverick Wave flopped, fading to last place in a 13-runner field. The Pizza Man was settled in fifth place, in the third flight of horses about six lengths behind Shining Copper, who posted really strong early fractions ahead of Maverick Wave and French-trained Bookrunner. Both of them were spent forces as The Pizza Man was asked to make ground four wide on the far turn before being driven to lead inside the final furlong, and then receiving more firm handling from regular partner Florent Geroux to hold Big Blue Kitten by a neck, with Shining Copper gamely holding for third place. "I'm always confident when I ride him," said Geroux. "He loves to win and knows where the wire is. But I had no horse the whole way - it looked like he was struggling over the very soft track but when I put him outside he started to hold up and grabbed the bit again and I was thinking. 'Oh boy he's going for a big one here!' He is a local horse and even going to the track there was a lot of people cheering for us and I'd like to thank them." The Pizza Man was doubly declared in the American St Leger, a race he won 12 months ago, and was declared an intended runner in the Million only on the morning of the race. Jamie Spencer reported that soft ground had been "no good" for http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=760206#topHorseTabs=horse_race_record&bottomHorseTabs=horse_form" rel="nofollow - Belgian Bill . "I think we could have placed if the ground was fast," he said. Gerald Mosse said it had also been a "bit too soft" for Bookrunner, who came ninth. "I think the ground is quite deep for him and I'm not sure he handled it too much," he said. "With that ground I feel the distance is too long." William Buick was understandably disappointed with John Gosden's Huxley Stakes winner Maverick Wave. "He is obviously a lot better than that," he said. "I was where I wanted to be but he dropped back so fast. That wasn't him." >>The Arlington Million is a Breeders' Cup Challenge 'Win and You're In' race for the Breeders' Cup Turf. The Pizza Man team of Brueggemann, Geroux and owners Midwest Thoroughbreds won last year's Sprint with Work All Week.

Sheikh Fahad: thought Secret Gesture would lose race in stewards' room PICTURE: Alain Barr (racingpost.com/photos)Secret Gesture camp considering appeal BY DAVID BAXTER10:40AM 16 AUG 2015 CONNECTIONS of http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=811020#topHorseTabs=horse_stories&bottomHorseTabs=horse_form" rel="nofollow - Secret Gesture are considering appealing her demotion in Saturday's Grade 1 Beverly D Stakes, with David Redvers, racing manager to part-owners Qatar Racing Ltd, labelling the situation as "slightly bonkers". Despite crossing the line first in the race, the Ralph Beckett-trained mare was demoted to third as she was deemed to have caused interference with Stephanie's Kitten - who finished third - with Watsdachances picking up the victory. The interference was minimal, and arguably had the race been run in Britain Secret Gesture would have kept the win. However the American racing authorities operate under a different set of a rules. Redvers said on At The Races on Sunday morning: "It's tough, if you'd run the race another ten times Secret Gesture would win it every time, she was given an inspired ride by Jamie [Spencer]. It seems desperately unfair and unjust and we're looking at appealing. "They run by different rules over there so we've just got to see whether or not common sense will prevail."
'Slightly bonkers' Redvers added: "I couldn't see how we would lose it - the best horse won and won comfortably - but Sheikh Fahad thought we would lose it. It doesn't make any sense in my head. Wouldn't it be a wonderful utopia if we all raced by the same rules? "It's a frustrating state of affairs. We left it last [Saturday] night that we were definitely appealing, but we're taking advice locally and if it's clearly a waste of time we won't waste everybody's time."

I think the Brits have the protest position the horse in front too much -perfect eg is Jacqueline Quest beating Special Duty. Rules at time saw correct demotion of the winner, we had people saying JQ was best horse and should have kept the race, ignoring the fact that the line she took was metres longer than a straight line. In doing so she dragged SD the same way. yes, she was best horse, but SD goes in a straight line, she wins. Rules got changed, so now JQ very likely have kept the race and very hard to win on protest. Saw one example last year at Ascot of a head winner messing up the 2nd and keeping the race to the surprise of most pros given how slim the margin.
Secret Gesture's contacts I think are right to feel aggrieved - to me Stephanies Kitten's jockey made a total meal out of it - akin to his Latin American soccer playing compatriots calling for a foul after not being touched. He would have been hoping for 2nd and being promoted to winner, instead when he pulls her, he drops to 3rd and SG is hugely unlucky. Chad Brown luckiest of the lot, training the eventual winner and not enough grace to say so.

Mohaymen, Tapit's $2.2 million son continued his undefeated streak as the 2/5on fav in the G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park. He now leads in the point table for qualification to the Kentucky Derby.

Nice that you mention Songbird who cruised to victory in the GII Las Virgenes Stakes at 1/10on.
But its a bit curious how the World Rankings have ranked her so high @ #4 in the world as the highest 3YO and much higher than the leading 3yo on the Triple Crown trail Mohaymen. (equal 17th)
It would be really competitive of the connections to face the C&G in the Triple Crown races but it is more likely that they will point to the Kentucky Oaks where she is a solid morning line 3/1 favourite in the upcoming Future Wager coming up this weekend.
Going back to the world rankings our own Chautauqua is in 11th, while Bow Creek, Holler, Japonisme, Lucky Hussler and Terravista are all 17th. A few of the a running this weekend so it will be interesting to see how they are ranked the next time these World Rankings are published in mid April.

Nyquist easily from Exaggerator, Gun Runner and Mohaymen ....
No big shock for the second largest crowd (167,227) except for the thunderstorm which let loose 1 hour before the race!

As expected the 3 placegetters from the KD are expected to enter the Preakness Stakes. There are other runners from the Derby and also the also eligible that didn't get a start. A few of these are over their heads.
Nonetheless, the race will get plenty of focus.

When a Maiden Isn’t a Maiden
The sixth race at Belmont Park on Sunday, May 15th, was a $75,000 maiden special weight that was run on the inner turf course with a field of eleven. The race was won in an impressive time of 1:59.94 by Mongolian Prince. The four-year-old New Zealand bred, who is owned by the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry, paid $35.60 to win, while earning the $45,000 winner’s share of the purse.
Mongolian Prince came into the New York race with just one other listed race in the United States and that was a fifth place finish, beaten by 14 lengths, in a March 18 maiden special weight on the Gulfstream Park turf where he was bet to be the 4.00-1 third choice.
What makes this particular maiden victory unusual is that Mongolian Prince was not a maiden at all. Mongolian Prince had already raced five times in China and had recorded three victories. As a matter of fact, he was regarded as one of the most promising three-year-old stakes winners in China.
The Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry is one of the leading owners of thoroughbreds in China. In recent years Lin Lang, the head of the IMRHI, has spent millions of dollars to bring almost 1,000 horses, bred in New Zealand, to race in China. The group was very excited to bring one of their best runners in Mongolian Prince to compete in the United States and his arrival was announced in two prominent American racing websites in January.
Clearly, the fact that Mongolian Prince managed to run at Gulfstream as an apparent first time starter and then at Belmont with only that distant fifth place finish listed, raises many questions. The most important question is why did his races in China not become part of his race record when his paperwork went through the Jockey Club offices in New York.
The betting public did not have the appropriate information and the other ten horses in the Belmont Park race were not actually running against a second time maiden starter. Mongolian Prince won that race by a head over Revved Up, who runs for the prominent American barn, the Phipps Stable.
At this point it seems probable that nobody was trying to intentionally perpetrate a betting coup, but more likely that this is one of those unforeseen situations that come along for which none of the governing bodies was prepared.
As we have seen with lots of horse racing issues, the many and varying official organizations, be they domestic and/or international, have trouble working together to do what is best for racing.
On the other hand it also seems like nobody outside of the official organizations was willing to make sure that the American racing public got all of the information about Mongolian Prince. Did they all think that somebody else would take care of the dissemination of the correct information?
Obviously the ownership group knew his past record and did not make sure that Mongolian Prince’s past performances were complete. Should they be held accountable for that lack of full disclosure of that vital information?
No doubt that all of the groups involved, from the race tracks to the Jockey Club to the individual state racing commissions, had a roll in what happened when Mongolian Prince was allowed to run in the two American races. At the very least, provisions have to be made to prevent this from happening again and there should be consideration about whether any kind of official action be taken about the recent maiden victory.

Reefer Madness: Lynch, Private Zone Penalty is Insane
Wednesday, June 8, 2016 |

Private Zone | Sarah K Andrew
By Bill Finley It’s
2016 and, so far as crimes go, smoking a little weed is somewhere up
there between littering and jaywalking. In Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and
Washington, smoking marijuana isn’t even illegal. Yet, according to the
Daily Racing Form, since trainer Brian Lynch allegedly tested positive
for marijuana, the New York Gaming Board has ordered that his Grade
I-winning sprinter Private Zone (Macho Uno) has to be scratched from
Friday’s GII True North S. at Belmont.
Consider the crime. Consider the punishment. The two don’t come anywhere close to fitting.
“I think it shows a rather extreme and not thoroughly logical
application of racing regulations,” said Frank Becker, an equine law
specialist in Lexington, Kentucky and author of “Equine Law,” the
leading treatise on the subject.
It seems that the Gaming Board can test any licensed backstretch
worker anytime it wants. With Lynch, his attorney Drew Mollica and
Gaming Board officials all keeping quiet Wednesday, we’re left to
speculate that the trainer was chosen at random to be tested. In the
wrong place at the wrong time.
Lynch is a licensed trainer in New York, so he has given the Gaming
Board the right to test him, but why did the Gaming Board bother to do
so? Jockeys? Yes. For safety concerns, they can never be allowed to ride
under the influence of anything stronger than a Mountain Dew. But
trainers? For pot? Who cares? There just isn’t any justification for
going around and testing them to see whether or not they had done
something as innocuous as smoking a joint.
Perhaps an owner should not want his or her horses being trained by
someone who smokes an illegal drug, but that should be between the
trainer and the client. Rene Douglas, who represents Private Zone’s
ownership group, Good Friends Stable, apparently isn’t concerned about
Lynch’s habits as he told the DRF, “I’m not mad at Brian, I’m human
too.”
The real problem here, though, is not that Lynch personally got hit
so hard for such a minor offense, but that the owners paid such a steep
price. This is a Grade I winner that was going to be the favorite in a
$250,000 race. The Good Friends Stable did nothing wrong, but it has
been levied what amounts to one of the most substantial penalties you’ll
ever seen in racing. They didn’t have the opportunity to transfer the
horse to another trainer because it had already been entered under
Lynch’s name for the True North when he allegedly tested positive for
marijuana. That’s not right. If they want to continue going around
digging under rocks to find people who committed the most minor of
infractions then they’re going to have to find a way to not make the
owner and the horse pay the price for something they had no control
over.
And how ironic is it that they nailed a trainer who appears to be
perfectly legit when it comes to what drugs he uses on his horses? Lynch
has just one violation on his record, a Class C positive in 2012 in
Kentucky that was such a minor deal all he received was a $500 fine. In a
game overrun with cheating, they nailed a guy who doesn’t appear to be a
cheater. Perhaps their resources could have been better spent going
after the real bad guys, the people that dope horses, and not some poor
guy who smoked some pot.
When someone there is ready to speak, the Gaming Board may tell you
that rules are rules, that Lynch tested positive for marijuana and
therefore had to temporarily give up his license, that a horse entered
under the name of an unlicensed trainer can’t run. Yes, there are rules,
but there’s also common sense, not to mention what’s fair and what’s
not. For so many reasons, this is idiotic. Private Zone should never
have been scratched.

Not to hijack the Private Zone incidence which is bizarre to say the least I want to make another comment about this same Belmont Stakes Racing Carnival meeting this weekend.
NYRA has scheduled some very interesting races which really go back in time. On Thursday they had a race over 1 15/16 miles (~3100 metres on the Inner Track) Belmont Coronation Invitational Stakes for Fillies and Mares.
Today Friday, the same day as the scratching of Private Zone in the G2 True North Stakes, a 1 1/2 miles dirt race for Fillies and Mares (Rags to Riches Invitational Stakes) and lo and behold rare as rare here in the US the 2 miles Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes on the Widener Turf Course for the stakes amount of US300,000.
Tomorrow there are two 1 1/2 miles races - nut they are on the dirt - the open Brooklyn Invitational Stakes and of course the last leg of the Triple Crown - The Belmont Stakes.
Going back to today's 2 mile Gold Cup which is attracted 12 starters with several European breds is finally a sign for US breeders and owners that long distance racing is needed for the breed, especially for here in the US which is predominantly speed based on the dirt. The winner of today's race is worthy of a mention because maybe one day a horse from the US can also perform and impress at this distance in the Melbourne Cup. The winner ran the 2 miles in a not too shabby 3:17.29 (NTR).
Now lets go to the video! http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/race/USA/BEL/2016/6/10/10/belmont-gold-cup-invitational-s

Won in a canter, the rename Hollywood Oaks now the Summertime Oaks since the track is closed now and all the Graded races moved over to other tracks including Santa Anita where this race was held.
She started at 1/20on and paid the same for place and show bearing a negative pool which cost Santa Anita $201,400.83 because of a
negative show pool—$1,017,594 of the $1,081,223 pool was wagered on
Songbird. Here in the US tracks have to pay a dividend - no money back.

The Coaching Club American Oaks since 2011 is run at Saratoga on opening weekend, July 24. Before it was run at Belmont Park.
Possible plan after that is : Aug. 20 Alabama (gr. I)—also at Saratoga —followed by Sept. 24 Cotillion Stakes (gr. I) at Parx Racing (near Philadelphia) and the Breeders' Cup back at Santa Anita.

Agreed, I'm the first to admit that without Sky we would have no live coverage of some of the best international racing on the planet. On the same weekend when Winx extended her streak, here in the US, 3YO filly Songbird also won her 10th straight in the GI Alabama Stakes (~2000m) at Saratoga.

Another easy win for her but really until she beats the boys as easily as Winx does I cannot see how she could get a higher world ranking.
Proof even more that Beholder, Champion mare from last season was 5 lengths behind California Chrome.
From the last World Rankings (Aug 11)
California Chrome #2 Winx #3 Werther #5 Chautauqua #11
Songbird #24

Just as a note. Although this is about Australian Racing, it deals with simulcasting of he Australian Racing Product here in the US.
I have noticed that simulcasting of Caulfield last week and Moonee Valley this week is not on the program.
In fact only Flemington is scheduled for the next month.

Another commanding win by California Chrome as he keeps on tweaking for the Breeder's Cup Classic with an easy win in the GI Awesome Again Stakes.
The big shock of the week was Flintshire getting beaten in the GI Turf Classic at Belmont Park as the 1/5on favourite. Anyone who backed him on the rain affected track was taking an enormous risk knowing that he was sent from Europe to get a way from those soft tracks. It will be interesting how the Breeder's Cup Turf shapes but and whether Found enters that race or sticks to the F&M Turf.

I thought that it was embarrassing that a horse making his sixth lifetime start, with a few wins in very small fields, crushed a track record that has existed since 1979 (and set by a really good horse, at that). It was a souped-up day at the Spa. Like I typed above, it was embarrassing.

Nearly time for the main race.
A real Winx Vs Hartnell sense about it.
Will California Chrome and Arrogate bring each other undone ?
You'd imagine California Chrome with his vast maturity will be able to with stand the pressure from the young upstart.
Keen Ice was slightly disappointing on resumption but could enjoy the drop on these two and Frosted also dishing it up to a fast pace.

G2 Holy Bull Stakes over 1 1/16 mile at Gulfstream Park - Curlin's son Irish War Cry (4/1) defeated last years 2YO champion Classic Empire into 3rd place

Undefeated McCracken continued to roll win as the 6/4 fav. in record time of 1:42.45 by 1 1/2 lengths. Impressive and looks next to the G2 Tampa Bay Derby (Mar 11)
G2 San Vicente Stakes @ Santa Anita Park 7 furlongs
5 starters only in a race which last year featured Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. His trainer Doug O'Neill saddled this year's winner Iliad who won impressive by 3 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:21.62. Unfortunately this race does not carry any points towards Kentucky Derby qualification. Probable next race is the G2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 11.
Next weekend:
G3 El Camino Real Derby (1 1/8 miles) @ Golden Gate Fields G3 Southwest Stakes (1 1/16 miles) @ Oaklawn Park

Rank outsider (48/1) Zakaroff cause a major boil over on the synthetic surface winning in 1:51.34. Connections have not nominated their horse to the Triple Crown so it remains to be seen if this race has any impact for qualifying.
G3 Southwest Stakes (1 1/16 miles) @ Oaklawn Park
Undefeated One Liner (12/5) bolted in by 3 1/2 lengths in a time 1:41.85 in his first stakes victory. Next weekend:

G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes (1 1/16 miles) @ Gulfstream Park

Gunnevera (6/1) improved to a commanding 5 3/4 length victory in a time of 1:44.25 for a big win and now leads the 2017 Road to the Kentucky Derby point table with 64. Rival Irish War Cry (Evens) was most disappointing weakening to 7th place.
G3 Gotham Stakes (1 1/16 miles) @ Aqueduct
J Boys Echo (6/1) swept four-wide around the turn and romped home for a 3 1/2 lengths victory in a time of 1:46.34. Short odds on El Areeb faltered and finished 3rd.
Listed John Battaglia Stakes (1 1/16 miles) @ Turfway Park
The 2/1 favourite It’s Your Nickel routed his opponents by 6 1/2 lengths. No points were garnered by the connections but the colt will be entered for the G3 JACK Cincinnati Casino Spiral Stakes which does carry points on March 25.

Sorry for the late update. Traveling through Europe at the moment.
This weekend:
G2 San Felipe Stakes (1 1/16 miles) @ Santa Anita Park
Bob Baffert's trained frontliner Masterly (4/5on) won comfortably by 6 3/4 lengths in a time of 1:42.28. Unfortunately soon after the finish line the colt suffered a condylar fracture in his left front leg and had to have surgery.
G2 Tampa Bay Derby (1 1/16 miles) @ Tampa Bay Downs
Tapwrit (11/10) took advantage of not having to face McCracken who missed this race with a slight ankle strain won by 4 1/2 lengths in a stakes record time of 1:42.36.
Next weekend:
G2 Rebel Stakes (1 1/16 miles) @ Oaklawn Park

Undefeated Malagacy (3/1) continued his climb up the ranks for trainer Todd Pletcher winning his first graded race in fine style in 1:43:00 by 2 lengths. G1 Arkansas Derby probably next.
Next weekend:
G2 (UAE) United Arab Emirates Derby (1900 metres) @ Meydan Racecourse, Dubai

This weekend:
G2 (UAE) United Arab Emirates Derby (1900 metres) @ Meydan Racecourse, Dubai
The first major prep race carrying 100 points for qualification to the winner was won by the Godolphin owner Irish bred Thunder Snow by the Australian sire Helmet over the already KD qualified Japanese entrant Epicharis by a short head margin, with the Todd Pletcher trained, Master Plan in the third. The time was 1:57.76 for the running on a track that was officially rated as muddy.
G3 Jack Cincinnati Casino Spiral Stakes (1 1/8 miles) @ Turfway Park, Kentucky
A massive upset as all the three placegetters were in double digit odds. Starting at 24/1, Fast and Accurate was able to hold off Blueridge Traveller (35/1) by 3/4 length with Convict Pike (10/1) a half a length in third. The final time was 1:50.96 and its another race which will be hard to rate as a form guide for KDerby.
G3 Sunland Derby Stakes (1 1/8 miles) @ Sunland Park Racetrack, New Mexico
Calumet Farm's 10/1 outsider Hence won by 3 3/4 lengths in a time of 1:48.10 defeating local favorite and previously unbeaten Conquest Mo Money (16/5) with Hedge Fund in third place. So it is tough to follow form of Hence given his last start 7th at Oaklawn Park in the Southwest Stakes.
Next weekend:
G1 xpressbet.com Florida Derby (1 1/8 miles) @ Gulfstream Park, Hallandale Beach, Florida
G2 Louisiana Derby (1 1/8 miles) @ Fair Grounds Race Course, New Orleans, Louisiana

Second favorite Always Dreaming (11/4) bolted in by 5 lengths in a fast time of 1:47.47, in fact fastest in the Fla Derby since Alydar won 1:47 in 1978. Trainer Todd Pletcher is starting to have multiple entries as far as qualifiers for the Run for the Roses. State Of Honor continued his good form while favourite Gunnevera came from well back to just grab third place.
G2 Louisiana Derby (1 1/8 miles) @ Fair Grounds Race Course, New Orleans, Louisiana
Favorite Girvin (11/8 fav.) outclassed his eight rivals taking the lead in the straight and winning by 1 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:49.77. Patch finished second and Local Hero was in third. Girvin takes over the lead in points gained to qualify for the Kentucky Derby.

This weekend:
G1 Santa Anita Derby Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, California (1 1/8 miles)
Gormley (6/1) outbattled his rivals in 1:51.16, the slowest Santa Anita Derby time since 1957. That's not promising but he ranks second on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 125 points.
G2 Wood Memorial, Aqueduct Racecourse, New York (1 1/8 miles)
New Jersey bred Irish War Cry rebounded from his debacle last start in Florida and won by 3 1/2 lengths in 1:50.91. Its been 25 years since a NJ bred has started in the KDerby.
G2 Blue Grass Stakes, Keeneland Racecourse, Lexington, Kentucky (1 1/8 miles)
Longshot Irad (31/1) stunned the crowd by being the first maiden to win the event in 1:50.39.
Next weekend:
G1 Arkansas Derby, Oaklawn Park, Arkansas (1 1/8 miles)
G3 Lexington Stakes, Keeneland Racecourse, Lexington, Kentucky (1 1/16 miles)

Champion 2YO last season Classic Empire (8/5 fav) came back to form to win by 1/2 a length in 1:48.93 over Conquest Mo Money and Lookin At Lee a length away in third. The win firmly places Classic Empire back into the KDerby picture.
G3 Lexington Stakes, Keeneland Racecourse, Lexington, Kentucky (1 1/16 miles)
A late charge by Senior Investment (11/1) defeating West Coast (2/1) by a head with favorite No Dozing (9/5) in third in the time of 1:45.05. The winner does not have enough points to qualify for the KDerby but connections have indicated The Preakness at Pimlico as a possibility.

Multiplier (9/2) improved off his maiden victory at the Fair Grounds (March 17) with a desperate lunge at the finish over favourite Hedge Fund (9/5) in 1:47.98.
Federico Tesio Stakes, Laurel Park, Maryland 1 1/8 miles
I forgot to mention this race last week because it has lost its class grading and is only considered a Black Type. The race was once a G3 and was well regarded. Nonetheless, the race is an automatic entry for The Preakness (2nd leg of the Triple Crown) for the winner.
The Chad Brown trained New York State bred Twisted Tom won by 2 1/4 lengths in a time 1:53.60 in the slop. The horse was not Triple Crown nominated but the win nullifies a $150,000 supplemental fee.

Well Done. Don't know price you got in OZ but the pool (WP & S) at Turf Paradise for the race was about $29,000 which was way below the stakes offered for the race ($45,000).
Such is the demise of racing and real question about the sustainability of the sport here in the future.
