Facebook: www.facebook.com/pages/Echuca-Horse-Sales/157582900972357 www.facebook.com/echucahorsesale Try those 2 & the only reputable group who'll bid for you are: www.facebook.com/HorseAtAuction?ref=br_tf Friends can't speak more highly of them. Poor Little Critter was 'saved' by a friend last sales, definitely from the knackery as he was a real mess in terms of soundness & a rig tho very quiet

Yes, you will have to go through Horses at Auction - bidding group Gay linked too. They usually have the photos still up of previous sales, but they are not always id'd. I try to id most of the tbs that i see the photos of, but some do get missed.

I want to Firstly congratulate the team at HAAP, Today they bid and won on 30 horses for other people!! This Team led by https://www.facebook.com/belinda.goyarts" rel="nofollow - Belinda PugRescue Goyarts
are AMAZING! They are professional and cover all bases for their
clients, They travel a long way each Weds sale eve, photograph and put
up details of the horses, provide assessment of horses by an experienced
horseman, spend all day answering clients questions, bid for their
clients and then feed and care for the purchased horses after sale!!
Some of these horses were headed for the doggers truck and if HAAP
didn't do what they do each sale their would be so many more heading
that way THANKYOU HAAP from everyone that has a 'horsy' bone in their body, you girls rock!!!!!! https://www.facebook.com/kerrie.dean.77" rel="nofollow - Kerrie Dean , https://www.facebook.com/nik.crumpton" rel="nofollow - Nik Crumpton , https://www.facebook.com/heather.johns.545" rel="nofollow - Heather Johns and sorry I dont know the other girls names. Yes, that is fantastic. Not many get the accolades deserving for those who rehome the thoroughbreds that crappy owners send to the knackery etc. Should be a fine for the owners and awards for the like as mentioned above.

The loud whinnies of confused horses ring out across the
capacious Echuca Horse Sale complex regardless of whose hand is raised
to place a bid and determine their future.
But unlike some of her bidding rivals who clamour around iron pens to
gaze upon the 120 or so horses of varying breeds on offer in the sale,
Kylie Stephenson is purchasing horses to return to the industry from
which they came.
A small-time Victorian breeder who manages a band of six broodmares
at Cora-Lynn Farm, Stephenson is part of a growing legion of passionate
thoroughbred enthusiasts attending the Echuca Horse Sale every fortnight
with the intention of cataloguing and re-homing as many thoroughbreds
as possible.
Together with members from Racing Victoria’s (RV) Equine Welfare
Department and Horses at Auction – a volunteer group that places bids on
behalf of those unable to attend the sale in person – every effort is
made to ensure a safe future for the retired thoroughbred racehorses
that land in a pen at Echuca.
Stephenson is particularly interested in the older mares that find
their way to Echuca, believing that many of them can be utilised in the
Victorian breeding industry.
“A group of us have been working on this for about four months and
apart from one person, we’re all small breeders,” Stephenson said.
“Because of our breeding history, we started doing background
searches on these mares’ pedigrees and found that many were quite good
mares and could have a future back in the industry.”
With the help of social media and the large networking channels of
like-minded individuals, Stephenson has been responsible for finding new
homes for more than 25 horses offered through the ring at Echuca.
Attending most of the fortnightly sales, Stephenson - sometimes with
the help of others - identifies horses via their brands and shares their
identity on the popular Kristen Manning Pedigrees and Thoroughbred
Media Services Facebook page.
“I can’t take them all but these horses are better off going back into the industry than the alternative,” Stephenson said.
“We’ve been working well with Kristen (Manning) and she’s got over
5000 followers on her Facebook page now so it’s just growing in leaps
and bounds.
“In the last few months we’ve rehomed a minimum of 25 mares.”
When she can’t secure them in the ring, Stephenson tracks horses that
have been purchased by dealers, often providing a final lifeline for
horses when no other buyer emerges.
This was the case with two mares Stephenson has now welcomed into her
select band of broodmares at Cora-Lynn Farm – Cape Cross mare Supadiva
and former jumper Beach D’Or.
A winner of five races and more than $40,000 from 34 career starts,
Supadiva was retired and tried briefly as a mum, producing fillies by
Elvstroem and Hold That Tiger.
Connections decided her post-racing talents would be better realised
as an equestrian mount and sent the now 13-year-old to what they were
told was going to be a loving home. They were mistaken.
Purchased at Echuca for a mere $300 by Laverton Pet Supplies (LPS),
Supadiva was moved to the Bendigo property of Rehoming Horses Victoria,
an organisation that offers buyers a final window of opportunity to
secure a horse purchased by LPS.
“I saw her (Supadiva) come up on the Horses At Auction – Preview
Facebook page when she arrived at Echuca but I didn’t actually know who
she was on that day,” Stephenson said.
“I was later told by a racing person that she had been bought and was
at Laverton (LPS) but luckily we were able to get her out of the yard
and sent to Bendigo to be sold on by Rehoming Horses Victoria.
“Supadiva ended up getting fundraised for to be saved and the person
that put up nearly all of the money to buy her was actually a racing
person who knew her as a racehorse.
“The rescue group that was going to take her went to pick her up from
Bendigo but she had sustained some injuries and they unfortunately
decided not to take her.
“I got a mayday call to say that the horse was still there (Rehoming
Horse Victoria) so I bought her home, rehabilitated her and she’s been
going great.
“We’ve decided that we’re going to put her back in and breed with her
this coming season because we think she’s an absolute cracker.”
It was a similar story for 13-year-old mare Beach D’Or, a successful
steeplechaser and winner of more than $100,000 on the track, after her
original racing owners gifted her to an individual that had pledged to
re-educate the mare for a career in eventing.
“Another mare we’ve got is Beach D’Or and she is a similar story to Supadiva,” Stephenson said.
“Her owners, Mary and Colin Rees, who had the mare in Ballarat, bred
with her but had trouble getting her in foal so they did the right thing
by looking around for a suitable home for her as an eventer.
“They ended up giving her to people that, unbeknown to them, had
intentions of taking her to Echuca Sales three days later to cash her
in.”
Raised in a racing family – Stephenson is the niece of the late Bryan
Muschialli, a respected bloodstock agent and passionate racehorse owner
– the former FEI Dressage rider has been brought up to revere and love
the animal, rather than value it as a commodity.
It’s this long association with the thoroughbred industry that sees
her take affront to the claims by outsiders – usually animal extremist
welfare groups opposed to racing – that owners, trainers and breeders
have little regard for horse welfare in an industry in which dollar is
king and battlers are out to make a quick buck.
“What we’ve seen is that a lot of the racehorse breeders and owners
don’t put these horses here at Echuca – the vast majority of horses
ending up at Echuca have been re-homed at least once since finishing
their racing careers,” Stephenson said.
“If we can take out 25% of the thoroughbreds that end up at Echuca
through dodgy dealing by people outside of the racing industry, it’s
easier on the horses, it’s easier on the owners and it’s easier on me.
“Hopefully it will make owners and trainers a little bit more aware
of how many suspect people there are outside of the industry.”
As part of its commitment to equine welfare, RV representatives will
continue to attend the Echuca Horse Sale each fortnight to identify
thoroughbreds for sale and provide courtesy service to alert owners,
trainers and breeders to the presence of any former horses.
Kylie & others like her deserve any accolades & luck that come their way

What's wrong with these people? White Knight was trained by Matthew Williams, part owned by Ritchie Callender & lobs at a knackery via Echuca saleyard this week. Could they not have found a home for him? Does Ritchie or any of the owners know? Guess they will shortly as it's all over social media. I accept they all end up dead but for $300 less transport, possibly from W'nambool was it all too hard to have the horse put down where he was spelling if a decent home couldn't be found? I accept this may be the result of owners of the 'forever home' being responsible, again, if so, why not check with the trainer if he could be returned or an alternative found

I think we need to remember that Echuca is an auction house, not a slaughterhouse.
Yes, the gelding's owners could have done more. Yes, he could have been advertised on the various channels available to them and for all we know he could have been and it resulted in nothing. He's been looked after, his rehab had been started and with the exposure Echuca gets online every single week from HAAP, rescue groups etc. it is probably fair to say that they thought someone would take him on. Ex-jumpers, I understand, are popular retraining prospects. However, I also understand that tendon injuries make OTTBs less interesting to show homes (I had a bow tendon boy for awhile who was a stunner but dropped off the radar of every single possible showy home as soon as he did it).
According to one of the whacko groups he was purchased by a reseller who has already sold him on. So all in all, a success for the horse - provided he hasn't been purchased by a faux forever home.
And honestly, from my impression via gossip, Callendar doesn't seem the type to be too interested in the rehoming thing; it was probably left to the trainer.

That tendon injury would have put a lot of people off I suspect. Like I said above, quite a few people immediately dropped off their interest in a gelding I had when he retired purely because his tendon was bung.
Glad Callander came through, as he (and all others in ownership) should.

I know it's a sale, not a knackery, but it wouldn't hurt to put a reserve price on these horses to prevent the doggers buying them. We've rehomed 3 ex racehorses this season and with some slight time and effort we have always found them a good home.

There are so many ppl willing to help that the 'anti' groups are totally unaware of but fortunately, it was an anti jumps group who publicised it & I must add, were very helpful. Thousands of offers to save him were fielded including one from staff where he was broken in in NZ My source is fairly certain the owners were told a perfect home had been found, the week before the sale but many unscrulous types are now operating in Vic whereby they dupe owners into believing they're offering paradise on Earth, only to onsell quickly thru' the yards This appears to be the case with White Knight & the tough jumping mare Beach D'Or several months ago who also was saved. The dealer who bought him at Echuca tho' connected to a knackery, only purchases horses to onsell for riding etc. hence the inflated price of $1200 from the initial $450.

Great to see the Vic DPI so proactive, strangles cases have been coming thru' Echuca yards for over a month now with 2 sales per fortnight, namely Weds. & Fridays.
https://www.facebook.com/zena.0/posts/10205213913327503" rel="nofollow - - 42 mins ·
Important!!!
Anyone who buys horses from Echuca market has to immediately Quarantine
all horses as there is a strangles outbreak which has not been dealt
with!! Reality is- most horses will go direct to slaughter as the DPI
have not closed down the Saleyard and stopped the movement of horses!!!
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1455379468096620/permalink/1466192767015290/" rel="nofollow - - 37 mins ·
Important
notice!! We have reports of horses who have contracted Strangles from
Echuca Saleyards over the last 4 weeks! Any horse who has been through
this Saleyard MUST be quarantined away from any horses to stop the
spread of this nasty disease! We at the Gatekeeper believe the
sales should be shut down immediately to control and stop the spread of
Strangles- although the DPI have not done anything to date! We need to
protect the industry- and unfortunately most horses that go thru this
sale yard will be processed! Prices have never been so low - so we believe this is a reflection of this Strangles outbreak! In conclusion, I am not saying do not buy - just be aware and Quarantine !
https://www.facebook.com/judy.ramsey.18?fref=ufi" rel="nofollow - - Judy RamseyIm
suprised it hasnt been shut down for a little while. Give the place a
good scrub and clean out. Give a chance to those that are destined for
that place in the coming weeks not to bring it home with them. DPI
seemed more concerned about lice on sheep. You cop an on the spot fine
with that. The attitude about strangles is like 'pffft'

Unfortunately, no matter how fastidiously rehomed after racing, they, like all others in the sales, become victim of owners who no longer want or are able to continue caring for them. I realise death is inevitable but the stress of leaving their home & friends, getting dumped in saleyards, followed by the stench of death shortly prior to their demise, appalls me.

Bargain buy Georgia on my mind
12:00pm
|Daniel Miles
Most of the crowd has dispersed by the time a scrawny
daughter of Written Tycoon made her way through the Echuca and District
Livestock Exchange sale ring in late 2012.
The sting of the summer sun was slowly creeping across the sky,
warming the vast complex’s tin roof as the well-bred filly sauntered,
head slung low, through the undercover ring before a group of largely
uninterested onlookers.
Little
more than skin and bones, the unraced, unnamed two-year-old thoroughbred
spent no more than a minute in the ring before being purchased for just
$280.
There were only two bidders present at the time. Luckily for the filly, one of them was on behalf of Meagan Abaloz.
Abaloz had fallen in love with the young horse less than 12 hours earlier, having seen a photo of the filly on Facebook.
However, this was no conventional love story.
According to Abaloz, the unnamed youngster looked down for the count.
She was thin, her coat was dull and there were more than just a few
ribs on display.
But there was also something different about her, something that Abaloz couldn’t help but notice.
“She was just so broken. She had no life in her and her eye – it was just so sad,” Abaloz said.
Inspired rather than deterred, Abaloz committed to purchasing the filly – no matter the cost.
After an anxious fortnight’s wait for the filly to arrive, she was
finally united with her purchase and took the young horse straight to a
paddock filled with knee-high grass.
The filly was thrilled.
A veterinary inspection revealed a broken nose (the cause of her
apparent wind-sucking), some obvious malnourishment and a bit of
swelling, but after a brief period of rehabilitation the precocious bay
was back bucking her brands off.
Abaloz, foreman to Pakenham trainer Dianne Clover at the time,
recognised a desire to work in her filly and as such, entered the young
horse to her employer’s care.
Given the name Tycoon Georgia, Abaloz’s filly thrived.
After an inglorious debut at Geelong in July 2013 – “She was so green
she zig-zagged the entire straight” Abaloz said – Tycoon Georgia
transitioned to the picnic racing scene where she’s been a constant
inspiration to her owner.
The horse that no one wanted, that no one gave a second glance or hope, had finally found her feet.
Tycoon Georgia nuzzles her paddock mate.
A third placing at Woolamai at her second career start led to a desperately close second three weeks later at the same track.
Abaloz was overcome with a sense of achievement.
“She’s pretty special. She may not be the fastest horse going around
on the track but she gives 110 percent every time she goes out there and
tries her heart out,” she said.
Abaloz continued to fall for her prized filly and within no time the pair were inseparable.
She even committed to inking Tycoon Georgia’s name across her ankle once she broke her maiden status.
Too excited to wait, and too in love to care, ink hit skin in the midst of her Tycoon Georgia’s second racing prep.
Fortunately for Abaloz, her racing star came through with a win at her sixth start over 1050m at Balnarring.
However Tycoon Georgia is more than just an honest horse.
“She means more to me as a companion than a racehorse,” Abaloz said.
“But she loves racing which is why she does it.
“She’ll never be making me money – we’ve had some fair vet bills in
our time – but I couldn’t care less if she never makes me another dollar
in her life, as long as she gets around that track sound and comes back
to me safe, I’m happy.”
Tycoon Georgia is now trained by Abaloz’s current employer, Paul
Kramer, and is tentatively eyeing off start number 11 at Drouin
Racecourse on Boxing Day.
Abaloz thinks Tycoon Georgia’s due for her second career win, and she
says there’s always room for another photo on the living room wall.
But the racetrack outings aren’t for the wins, the prizemoney or even the bragging rights. They’re for Tycoon Georgia.
“Racing with her isn’t about winning, to me it’s about her being happy and doing what she enjoys doing,” she said.
“This horse means the world to me, she’s absolutely beautiful. When she shows me she’s ready to stop that’ll be it.
“She’s found her forever home here with me.”

Saved? Yeah, those he thought he could make an earn out of & when they're too damaged to do that, they go direct to the meat pens. Wednesday sales disallow brand broadcasting on social media but luckily for the Count, he went thru' on Friday with the winning bid amounting to a whole $420, one above the meat buyer & would've been higher had he been in decent condition A rather damning post on FB tonight:
What have Count Encosta and Little Critter got in common?
- both ended up at Echuca Sales - both saved against the meatman - both had previous injuries - both had the same owners/s
And were not sent there after been given to a good home!!!

"Jumps racing gives horses a second chance" "Jumps racing keeps horses out the knackery"
Yesterday we were alerted to the fact that Eric Musgrove trained horses SINGERSONGWRITER and WILARI were at Pakenham Sales. ... SINGERSONGWRITER - with $59,0000 in prize money and 12 jumps races to her name - raced a month ago at Warrnambool where she ran 4/5 in a hurdle race. Yesterday she appeared at the sales still wearing her race plates. She is nursing a tendon injury.
WILARI with $43,000 in prize money and 2 jumps races to her name - last raced over the hurdles in 2014 and appeared along side SINGERSONGWRITER at the sales.
Both were bid on by kill buyers.
Wilari's profile shows her as "retired" Singersongwriter is shown as still actively trained by Musgrove. No doubt in the next few weeks she will show up "Retired" as well.
Where is the accountability? How does this continue to happen?

Muscgrove has been sending his horses to Pakenham markets for years. Has no morals. Instead of taking 5 minutes to advertise them through horse deals or social media, where he would get quite good money for them (uninjured) but still at least $500 for those injured but still rehabable, he takes the easy way out.

There is a down side to this tho'. Sales are held on Fridays & Wednesdays by 2 different companies, one of which allows photos of brands, microchip IDs etc. when they arrive, thus giving time for research as to what's there. The other disallows it so ID becomes a bit more clandestine I understand. I also believe one of those days is basically only attended by meat buyers. Due to the worry of possible name & shaming, some sellers have decided to bypass the auction by going straight to Shep meats with instructions they are to be killed no matter what so a softly, softly approach appears to be the most beneficial to saving them. This poor girl appears to have run out of time , there are just so many non commercial available.

Well, if its come to this, maybe there needs to be some limits put on the breeding side of things.
Pointless and extremely cruel to be breeding horses just to dog them before they ever have a chance at life.
Racing is supposed to be trying to IMPROVE their image, not throw the whole game in with the likes of last,s weeks clown. ( Bulla )

The high wastage in greyhound racing has seen them impose some rules that will make it financially impossible to just breed willy nilly..in qld each time you get a bitch covered it's now a $2500 fee and then $250 per pup bond. Are there any similar rules in thoroughbred breeding?

Re Shep mare: No definite answer as yet.
Re: "...we all have to face the fact that breeders cull mares surplus to needs, like or not."
Pedigree lovers, buyers at sales, punters and/or anyone standing on the sidelines not actually involved in breeding but willing to point their finger can't have it both ways ... you cannot expect 'new' bloodlines or combinations of existing /available bloodlines without a stud being able to rotate horses through their individual breeding programs. Not everyone is prepared, able, willing or stark raving crazy enough to operate as a closed stud with their own stallion and a closed group of mares. To remain viable open studs must move some mares on at regular intervals. Of those mares some are being sold because they have breeding related 'issues' or the foals produced have not lived up to whatever standard was hoped for ... some are offered for sale thru a TB sale (Inglis etc) because aside from getting some small $ return doing so offers those bloodlines to other breeders lower down the food chain.
Re: "..I feel most sorry for all the youngsters, who, thru' no fault of their
own, haven't had a chance to prove themselves, nor will, e.g. last
weeks' flood of unregistered babies from Mornmoot " Too easy to sit in judgement ... I suspect there is considerably more behind this than you will ever know. ... just sayin

Sure, but the reality is that it does happen. The horse has 7 listed owners (including the trainer) and you have to wonder how a decision to take her somewhere like the Echuca sales is made. I would guess that the trainer has told the other owners that the mare has no future racing and they should try to get whatever they can for her (maybe or maybe not going into the detail of what that means). I was only suggesting that what is presumably the underlying basis for that decision (the mare's poor recent form) is largely to do with the trainer having NFI.

Maybe the connections gave him to a living forever home, once a horse finishes racing it is near impossible to track where horses end up. Maybe this needs to change, but obviously it is going to be very hard to keep track.

The whole point is that once a horse changes ownership, the previous one relinquishes all rights. Apparently this one was owned by the seller for the last 9 yrs, it's just a shame he landed in a kill pen but in saying that, at least he's been spotted & am advised, now saved thanks to the many involved.

Yes certainly not blaming connections, it's been a very long time since he raced, but they would be worth asking for a donation as if it was one of my former group winners, I'd be happy to dig deep and make sure he was saved.

Following the story on FB, they were trying to get hold of the owners, theY did make contact with his strapper who has offered to look after him in QLD.

He's safe.
Original owners were found, contacted and they didn't hesitate to buy him - he's apparently got a nice warm stable waiting for him at Flemington.
I'm guessing the karma fairy (or her representative) will soon be calling on the people who've had this the pleasure of this gentleman's company / service for the last 9 years and then just tossed him aside ....
ps: for the people who want to climb up Laverton ... we wouldn't have known about any of this if they hadn't made it known.
------------- suck it up ... Life isn't run at w.f.a. :)
