Having given my mare a rest this year , attention turns to an early service In 2014 , this stallion has grabbed me as a nice type and could suit a lot of different mares. Has any forumite got a foal or yearling by him and opinions on this only son of Montjeu in Australia , love his triple cross of Lulan, my only concern is lack of support , only 30 live foals in 2 years , will he become more attractive with Montjeu sons starting to hit there straps .

Also like the horse himself. Race record slim with only Derby and C Cup 2nd. The lack of support might be due to the service fee. I know a mare owner can only ask, but wouldn't he be a more attractive option at say $5000 neg?

Well , just had a bit of a look at Princes Farm's Roman Emperor lots , and I am pleasantly surprised , they look on the surfaced, pretty well put together. IMHO I reckon they might attract a bit of interest if they walk well.

A few of us have taken an interest in a Roman Emperor colt from the January Classic sale. In my view he was right up there as one of the best types in the sale. I wish they would make Roman Emperor commercially available.

Yes Robbo , is that lot 149, any more recent images available ? I like lot 127 in the winter book , looks a nice athlete, but might look different standing on level ground, not sure why the photos were done where they are ,I spose a nice backdrop .

That John Sargent colt looks outstanding. What a steal at $40k.

And he knows how to train a stayer! I didn't think the Roman E would be that fwd.

Really questioning wether I go RE or Monaco Consul for my mare.

Yep - Lot 149.

I will try and attach a couple of photos from the sale. The only updates since then are videos and that is beyond my technical capability.

Hard to see in the photo. Its small.

Had a look at the Winter and 115 looks the best. Will be fascinated to see what they go for. Note the photos are on an angle.

They dont look better than John Sargent's one.

Reasonable call based on the shot Whitt0.  Thumbs Up  However the camera, especially when the focus is mobile, can often be misleading.

ps would invite people to view the shot of Excelebration in the "New Stallion at Coolmore" thread and have a look at his near hind pastern.  A bit like some Sir T's I've seen in the past and some would shrink at the flex, others not.  Is it just a fractional moment in time or a potential bumper problem?  His performances would suggest not but then how many hard surfaces did he encounter.

I feel momentarily like a Progold: so many questions, so few answers.  Embarrassed

But over to others on both Robbo's colt and Excelebration, if you really want to.

I had a look at Excellebration & again at the one above. Maybe its the camera shot - if not they are high on the RE one. Ex does not look that bad.

We are doing more promotion on here for RE than Princes Stud.

Curious to your mare's pedigree whitt0  -is this the one by Canny Lad?

Camelot another son of Montjeu will be shuttling here but won't be cheap!

The broodmare is a Spinning World/Parada (Parade Ground). The last 2 generations have had some strange breeding considering the qualities from 3x back which are outstanding.

I also have 2 fillies Authorized/Sophielicious (Canny Lad). She went to the breakers yesterday and is a fine type. The other filly is Mossman/Zazita (Zabeel). She has a fantastic background and picked her up at the recent MM Yearlings. She was overlooked as she was a bit backward but had a great walk and legs fine. She apparently is very much a Zabeel type rather than Mossman. She will happily be out for a year to mature. Not in a rush.

Plan to breed and retain post racing.

There was a line that I think I first read in To Kill A Mockingbird that basically says that in many instances, you never ask a question that you don't already know the answer to.

This is the Roman Emperor yearling at John Sargent's stables last weekend. Broken in, had ten days in the stables to get through the system, tipped out and been back in for a fortnight.

He is coping well with everything but is still "downhill" and gappy in the knees, so time will be his friend.

This is the Roman Emperor with John Sargent - he has been in for about five weeks into his second prep, having had a good break. Pretty happy with him, especially given he is a mid-October foal and so is only a month past his second birthday.

I had mentioned in previous posts that we had taken a share in a Roman Emperor colt (gelding) with John Sargent. Now called Colosseum King, he was successful in a mile maiden at Kembla on Saturday.

There's a little write up (second half of the article) and a photo from the local rag:

Noticed that a 3yo by Roman Emperor called NEPEAN trained by James Cummings won at Randwick today.

Is this Roman Emperor's first metropolitan winner? Can't say I'm seen too many at the track. Would be great if he get some handy gallopers. He's a beautifully bred stallion and from memory a real good looker too.

Interesting that NEPEAN races in the old Leilani colours too.  I assumed they were owned by Andrew Peacock who owned Leilani back in the 70's. The Cummings family must have subsequently acquired them.

I've taken a keen interest in the Roman Emperor progeny as I am a part-owner in Colosseum King and have a colt on the ground by him, with my mare back in foal.

Nepean is the third metropolitan winner for Roman Emperor, following Imperator Augustus (Randwick) and Gold Denari (Morphetville). He has also had Emperor's Way, who placed at Warwick Farm last start and indeed has placed at all three starts.

Other winners for Roman Emperor include Colosseum King (3 wins), Caesar's Ghost and Savona Sunset, all of whom having won at the NSW provincials. Based on my numbers he has winners to runners of about 50%.

Although I concede some bias, I think he is travelling really well but needs a headline horse or two to be commercial. The ones I have seen are all lovely types and they should benefit with time and maturity. In particular, I hope that the current three year olds of Nepean, Emperor's Way and Savona Sunset can step up into some black type races as the distances get longer.

Great stuff robbo!! Thanks for the update.

Noticed your gelding last raced on 2/1/17 at Randwick but now has a Vet Certificate embargo in him.

Hope all is OK with your guy guy who see see back on track soon

Thanks LH. Avdulla basically shut him down in the last 100m the other day as he was worried that he might not be getting enough air into his lungs. He was travelling like the winner 200 out but shut down pretty quickly. We have had him dynamically scoped since and there doesn't appear to be a specific problem so the vet has recommended a tongue tie and freshening him up - you may see hi next back over 1200m at Randwick on Australia Day.

Thanks guys - we couldn't really tip him given the track came up as a Heavy 8 and he needs to be on top of the ground in order to utilise his turn of foot. He can let go quickly when he gets the right run in a race and when Travis poked his head through the gap at the 250 he let down very well. Probably his best win and he pulled up a treat.

We were the underbidders on Roman Typhoon at last year's Classic Winter sale. I had inspected all of the Roman Emperor's at Princes and he was a clear standout. When Bart passed away the Estate demanded that all of the yearlings go through public auction - hence in the very much second tier Classic Winter sale. We had agreed to go to $18,000 and ended up going to $21,000. Jan Bowen was sitting behind me and just holding her hand up. When I spoke to her after the sale she mentioned that she had a massive wrap on the half-brother, Exit Only. As it turns out Exit Only is ordinary and Roman Typhoon could be anything.

On the plus side, I have a lovely Roman Emperor colt on the ground and the mare is back in foal to him. His last five runners have been three winners and a second, which was a filly called Ave who was narrowly beaten in a $40K Showcase Maiden at Wellington yesterday. As I said earlier in the thread - they can all gallop but he just needs a headline horse. Roman Typhoon might be the one.

Colosseum King is in the last at Newcastle today. The 1200m will be too short but he should be hitting the line hard. Given the carnival and his awkward benchmark of 72 he is tricky to place.

Don't be too hasty to rule him out - Princes are good to negotiate with and also offer nominations via bloodstockauction.com.au (at least they did last year). I was able to secure one at well below the service fee.

It does look a lovely match with the infusion of Centaine, who worked so well with those deep New Zealand families.

I was absolutely rapt to see Roman Emperor get his first stakeswinner on Saturday with Emperor's Way winning the last at Randwick. He did a superb job in the preparation, going from a Class One to black-type and now has more than $360K in the bank from only 15 starts.

Latin Boy also broke the Newcastle 900m track record on Friday with 60.5kg.

Would love to see Roman Typhoon given a change to get over some ground, I know he has traits but they can be ironed out with time, he has loads of ability imo, it's there..just have to surface.

Was ok first up at Scone & goes to 1200m in the Highway Hcp at Randwick tomorrow.

Hope he progresses well this prep and we get to see what he can do over some ground.

I know what he wants Lord Hybrow and I am in no way being disparaging to the trainer, he's a bit of a head case I reckon, needs a regimented schedule where everything is done like clockwork morning, noon and night a la TJSmith where every was ridden to the track leading one as well , no horse went to the track one out , ride one lead one , they soon got the hang of it even Tulloch made no difference what horse it was , same time every morning and exercise in the afternoon, they become racehorse not headcases, didn't have time to think about anything else , he will stay , has got talent, I wish her well.

I think it’s d-day for Roman Typhoon today if he is going to live up to the hype. Really liked his run first up when had no support and his second up run last prep at Randwick was super in a hot race. Hopefully 1 alley isn’t a hindrance.

He's not putting in imo, and still looks reluctant, hesitant , or a little big boy lost.

Despite Roman Typhoons narrow 4th today, the mighty ROMAN EMPEROR still had a winner with Gold Denari winning race 5 at Gawler - seems like he’s a genuine sprinter with 4 wins from 10 starts, all wins between 1000-1250m.

Agree 100%. And Jean-Claude dropping the whip wouldn’t have helped in that regard. Still had his chance.

It was pleasing to see Roman Typhoon deliver on his undoubted potential on Saturday. He still wants to do a few things wrong but the aggressive ride from Avdulla was the difference.

Great weekend for Roman Emperor with three winners from five Australian runners, with Etheridge (Roman Son's little sister) and Savona Sunset both winning at Hawkesbury yesterday. Emperor's Way was also warming up nicely in the Winter Stakes.

$26 plus GST for dry mares and $31 for wet. I walk my mate on from Fairview Park Stud at Grose Wold which is just around the corner and a little cheaper. Plus they do a great job.

I drive past the stud nearly every ay so it would be nice to have my mare there instead of 5 hours away. Mind you @$26 a day it may be a bridge too far for me

With regards to Mikado Writer I sold a full sister to him at this year's winter MM.  She was my pride and joy as she is a big, bold and kind horse who is a great paddock galloper and has pizzazz.  She sold for $4 000 to China!! despite being a half sister to 4x city winners, and from a dual stakes place getter (which was not mentioned during the sale).

I had hoped she would at least go to a good racing home, but that does not look to be the case and I hope that she has a further future as a broodmare.  The other two I sold (who I rated inferior) went to trainers that I am happy with.

Gee Mumtaz if she impressed you that much why didn't you buy her back? I'm sure you would have felt bad watching her go , will she be shipped away or given at least one chance here?

Because I have to pay over $16K in sale prep etc fees and my weanling had sold poorly and I was not confident about my colt's prospects given the poor performance of the sale (I got THAT right).

I had suggested to the sale prep stud that I wanted a reserve of $6K on the filly given the above - I had originally intended  the reserve to be $10K - but they told me I should have a $4K reserve on her.  Guess what she then sold for.

In truth, I was lucky that the stud let me have any reserve on her.  I will be paying them back over some time.  And I only put the Roman Emperor filly into the sale after checking with MM that it was worth putting a RE filly in there in the first place.

expensive, risky, and the unknown, I wish you well in future endeavours.

Thanks Carioca

I think that sale took everyone by surprise (unless you had a Spirit of Boom) as a friend of mine sold a horse for a third of what some professionals had earlier said he was worth; the buyer later said she expected to pay 2-3 times more for the colt.  But he also owed money so had to sell at the price.  In fact, the stud he owed money to would not let him put a reserve on, but were apologetic later as they never thought the colt would sell that low.

All is not lost though (although my RE filly certainly is).  I own her weanling half sister and her mother is in foal to Nom Du Jeu by Montjeu.  I had thought that a 3/4 sibling to my RE filly could be worth something if the RE filly performed to my (probably overconfident) expectations.  But with the China purchase things did not work to plan.

Does anyone know Tommy Xu, the buyer of the RE filly?  I could find little on internet.

From Breednet:

Roman Emperor Looking for a New Home
Tara Madgwick - Sunday August 19
The recent sale of Bart Cummings' Princes Farm to Racing NSW has meant resident sire Roman Emperor is now looking for a new home in which to continue his stud career.

Owned by the estate of Bart Cummings and Dato Tan Chin Nam, Roman Emperor was a high class stayer as his pedigree would suggest winning the Group I ATC Australian Derby and finishing second in the Group I MRC Caulfield Cup.

By world renowned stallion Montjeu (IRE) from a prolific Black Type female family, Roman Emperor was bought from Karaka for $240,000 by Bart Cummings and won back all of that and more, retiring with earnings of $1.4 million.

The same qualities of class and stamina that drew the attention of legendary 'Cups King' Bart Cummings are now being passed on to the offspring of Roman Emperor.

Cummings had great faith in the ability of Roman Emperor to make his mark at stud and that faith has been vindicated despite his status as virtually a private stallion with limited opportunities that have seen him cover less than 200 mares in seven seasons at stud.

Roman Emperor has an impressive 54% winners to runners, his 19 winners headed by stakes-winner Emperor's Way, who runs for Triple Crown Syndications and is trained by Peter and Paul Snowden.
Also Sydney metro winners Roman Son and Latin Boy from the Richard Freedman stable, as well as Imperator Augustus, Nepean, Roman Typhoon and the very promising two year-old debut winner Etheridge, who is being aimed by her trainer John Thompson at Oaks races next year.

A stunning individual representing the powerful Sadler's Wells sireline, Roman Emperor is completely free of Danehill blood and would be a great addition for a farm looking to offer their clients proven world class stamina.

The hottest young staying sire in the world is Montjeu's Epsom Derby winner Camelot and another of Montjeu's Australian Derby winning sons in Nom Du Jeu, sired this year's Group I Hong Kong Derby winner Ping Hai Star. Also let's not forget Cambridge Stud's star Group I sire Tavistock, another super successful sire son of Montjeu, who stands at a fee of $65,000.

Interested parties in Roman Emperor should contact Anthony Cummings on 02 9663 3088.

Really pleased that Roman Emperor found a home and I suspect he will be suited to Victoria. They've priced him at a fee which should be attractive and hopefully he will get a commercial chance.

Even today his son Mandalong Emperor wins over 1000m at Gosford, which bodes well for later over further. Roman Son trials tomorrow and Etheridge, who is on an Oaks path, trials at Wyong next week.

From Breednet:

Roman Emperor to Stand at Mount Brown International
Media Release - Tuesday September 4
Lester O'Grady of Mount Brown International in Victoria is pleased to announced proven stakes sire Roman Emperor will relocate from Princes' Farm in New South Wales to join Diamond Tathagata this spring offering breeders a chance to get 'stuck into Montjeu'.

By world renowned stallion Montjeu (IRE) from a prolific Black Type female family, Roman Emperor was bought from Karaka for $240,000 by legendary trainer Bart Cummings and won back all of that and more, retiring with earnings of $1.4 million.

Despite the lack of numbers, Roman Emperor has an impressive 54% winners to runners, his 19 winners headed by stakes-winner Emperors Way and Sydney metro winners Roman Son, Latin Boy, Imperator Augustus, Nepean, Roman Typhoon and the very promising two year-old debut winner Etheridge, who is being aimed at Oaks races next year.

A stunning individual representing the powerful Sadler's Wells sireline, Roman Emperor is completely free of Danehill blood so is suitable for a wide range of mares seeking an injection of class and stamina.

His sire Montjeu is rapidly establishing his own sire dynasty in addition to his overall record of 126 stakes-winners worldwide, 31 of them Group I winners headed by superstars St Nicholas Abbey, Fame and Glory, Hurricane Run and even Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon, not to mention Group I winning sires Authorized and Motivator

The hottest young staying sire in the world is Montjeu's Epsom Derby winner Camelot and another of Montjeu's Australian Derby winning sons in Nom Du Jeu, sired this year's Group I Hong Kong Derby winner Ping Hai Star. Also let's not forget Cambridge Stud's star Group I Montjeu son Tavistock, who stands at a fee of $65,000.

"Roman Emperor is a proven stakes producing son of one of the world's best sires and his progeny will be eligible for all the VOBIS incentives and the lucrative Showdown series," said Lester O'Grady.

"Roman Emperor is the only son of Montjeu at stud in Victoria so breeders have a unique opportunity to get stuck into Montjeu right here in our own backyard."

Roman Emperor stands at a fee of $3,300 inc. GST.

I read this last week on FB but as I didn't get concrete confirmation on the validity, didn't post. Apparently Kristen Manning told someone or posted it but on checking the Stud Book even a few hours ago, they still hadn't changed his status. Very odd to my way of thinking, I wonder what happened Confused

This is sad & disappointing to hear of Roman Emperors passing.

Always follow his progeny when they race.

Now he has passed away prematurely, you can bet that he’ll posthumous get a really, really good horse.

I still think Roman Son has a nice race in him.

It is very sad; hopefully I can share in the continuation of his legacy. We have a two year old by him with Bjorn that’s about to come back for a second prep and mentioned on another thread, I’ve got one going to Classic 2019.

Roman Son trialled nicely the other day so hopefully he is over his niggles. Emperors Way trials this week, so hopefully they can both target some early season black type.

How did Roman Emperor die?

Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

Sad we lose these staying stallions. Viewed was another one who was going to go to stud (still had his crown jewels) after he finished racing.
