Foals caught in mass brumby slaughterPosted 2 hours 24 minutes ago Authorities want public help to learn who has shot 150 brumbies, including a number of foals, in the past 18 months in southern New South Wales. Ten brumbies were shot in state forests near Tumbarumba last weekend with what appeared to be a high-powered rifle. Forests New South Wales says the horses were shot in the body several times, sometimes at close range. Planning manager Kevin Peddy says officers have been shocked by the inhumane nature of the shootings. "In this latest round, it appears that a domestic palomino mare who had escaped from a nearby property had also been shot." he said. "Also included were some foals, so it is quite upsetting and the fact that they're being shot in a sort of appalling way doesn't make it any better." |

Yup, it happens every year in the governments "cull" of the brumbies. They shoot them out of a chopper, and leave them for dead. They dont bother to make sure the poor horse is actually dead. They just see it go down and aim for the next one.
Same way that they cull roos.

that should read "cruel" sport of racing
as this issue rears it's ugly head annually or every other year, with no-one being caught, despite the fact of the numbers of rangers in the SMNP, who are down on you like a ton of bricks when they hear the sound of a fishing lure hitting the waterbut apparently can't hear a high powered rifle shot echoing around the mountains, how come the RSPCA SMNP SMA and greenies arent enforcing their own "laws", the mind boggles
illegal carrying of weapons in a national park, illegal hunting in a national park, deliberate and calcuolated cruelty to animals etc etc etc,i can't use a metal detector in a national park because i might displace an ant colony, yet the uncontrolled (or is it) slaughter continues without a murmour from,th above, i am not against proper culling and control where neccessary, and not leaving the bush littered with dead and dying animals, not elimination which is happening now.
imagine the outcry if a jockey was to use the whip to control a horse in a race more than the sanctioned number of times!

Victoria proposes to rehome or shoot wild brumbies in plan aimed to reduce feral populationVictoria will shoot wild brumbies unable to be rehomed in a radical new plan designed to bring down the feral population. The three-year plan, which was released just before Christmas, comes after years of debate on how to best control the brumbies with Parks Victoria settling on a proposal to trap and domesticate or euthanise the wild animals. The proposal noted that between 150 and 200 horses have been removed annually from the Alpine National Park since 2008 however “this has not reduced the population”. “The impacts of feral horses in the Alpine National Park have now reached critical levels, and without intervention horses will continue to cause long-term and severe degradation of wetlands and waterways and prevent the recovery of these areas,” the proposal states. |

Here we go again. Pitt Street Professors who have no real idea at all come up with a brain wave.
They could easy spend the money they will use tracking and shooting, over 3 years, on putting out licks with contraceptive in it. Its been trialled, and it works. Too easy !! Put it out and its not a 3 year plan. No foals, no dramas. These "conservationists " always seem to have to do things the hard , as in disgusting, way. They bag the horses for causing problems in the countryside , yet the wild pigs are tearing up the entire parks, and how much do we hear about them ? Sweet FA. When will these nob heads do a study on the pigs ?? Not to even mention the disgusting harm the weekend warriors cause in these areas, when they go in , in their huge 4x4s, with their beer and fire drums and dogs. The damage they do is mind blowing. I say start with shooting them first, then the Pitt St Professors , then the pigs, before they think about the brumbies. |

They can count themselves lucky they aren't being force fed, impeccably groomed, made to suffer healthcare, and urged to run with a padded whip.
