Thought I'd start a general thread with recent news that Waller has picked up two decent sorts in Patrick Erin and Eagle Bay.

Patrick Erin was awkwardly placed in the ratings here and wasn't getting the financial rewards for a horse of his class with such a consistent record.  It's debatable what his best distance may be as his can race quite fiercely, but is likely to be set for the Sydney Cup as his main autumn goal.

Eagle Bay hasn't gone past 1600m yet, hard to say whether than may be his best trip or he could stretch a bit further.  Has beaten some useful fields coming through the grades recently so was a logical purchase.

Both horses have proven versatile in terms of racing position and track conditions.

from NZRacingnews

Patrick Erin and Eagle Bay, two of New Zealand’s serious up-and-comers, are set to join the stable of champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller.

The connections of top South Island stayer Patrick Erin have chosen Waller as the Australian trainer for the last-start Gr.3 Wellington Cup (3200m) placegetter, while bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster has bought last-start Duoro Cup (1600m) winner Eagle Bay for the Waller stables.

After enjoying so many highlights with Who Shot Thebarman, Waller is hoping to do the same with Patrick Erin, another White Robe Lodge product. The six-year-old will be prepared for the Gr.1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 14.

The deal was finalised this week after Patrick Erin’s senior co-trainer, Brian Anderton, had discussions with various Australian trainers during the National Yearling Sales at Karaka last week. Anderton left the final decision up to the horse’s Christchurch owner-breeder Pat Smith.

With less than $200,000 in prizemoney as a result of 10 wins and nine placings from 21 starts, Patrick Erin has risen to the top of the handicap and his plight was well-illustrated last start when fourth in the Wellington Cup. He had to carry 59kg, conceding 6kg to all bar three of his rivals.

“We are pretty disappointed with his rating and there is not much here for him in the South Island," said Anderton, who trains in partnership with his son, Shane.

Patrick Erin is a son of White Robe Lodge sire Gallant Guru, while the durable Who Shot Thebarman was bred by Anderton and his wife, Lorraine and is by another of their stud’s sires, the deceased Yamanin Vital.

Who Shot Thebarman left New Zealand after winning six of his 10 starts, including the 2014 Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m), for Awapuni trainer Mark Oulaghan and under the guidance of Waller he has taken his Australian stake earnings beyond $A2.7 million.

His wins include the 2015 Gr.2 Zipping Classic and last year’s Gr.2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup and he has been a regular competitor in the Melbourne and Sydney Cups.

Waller, who is set to become one of the latest inductees into the New Zealand Racing Hall Of Fame in Hamilton tonight, is also looking forward to the arrival of Eagle Bay.

“The sale went through on Tuesday and we got what we wanted for him,” said Aidan Schumacher, Eagle Bay’s trainer and part-owner. “He is up in Cambridge now and flies to Sydney on Monday.”

A five-year-old son of Faltaat, Eagle Bay created a big impression in the central districts with his record of nine starts for four wins and four placings. His wins have all come in his last five starts with three being over 1600m.

Yep, heard Ellis on racing.com horse, and he was talking Embellish up as a guineas hope.

Very interesting runner next week!

I'm a huge fan of NZ Carnival racing. Personally i think Embellish has been really well placed and marketed. He could even be a chance in our Aust Guineas with a fitness edge on his side compared to his likely opponents.

But i rate him only the 3rd best 3yo in the Ellis team. I think at 1600m, Age of Fire is 1st, Embellish is 2nd, Te Akau Shark a close 3rd.

Above a mile i anticipate some great clashes between Age of Fire and Te Akau Shark. Personally i think they are both a bit more talented racehorses than Embellish.

Hat tip to Ellis and his trainers. They have managed Embellish's career and sale as a stallion beautifully.

What do other Kiwi's or Kiwi racing fans think?

What about the 3rd horse behind Dijon Bleu on the weekend Milsean?

Only her 1st prep so don't know whether she'll need to be coddled or whether she'll thrive as the prep and distance increase. But geez she could be anything.

Age of Fire officially joins Embellish as future Cambridge Stud stallions.

Apparently coming to Australia immediately for Rosehill Guineas and Queen Elizabeth/Derby.

How good is Embellish?

Currently $12 and R&S computer has him a certainty. Drawn the ace and Bosson coming over suggests it's not a practice run.

Bookie radar not working, or perhaps working well ?????

Found this on Racenet:

Further south Autridge & Richards will also have New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Embellish kick off in the CS Hayes Stakes at Flemington en route to another autumn feature.

“He’s a big strong doing colt and he’s eaten well since he got there," Richards said.

“Dropping back from a mile to 1400m isn’t ideal but it will probably just give us an opportunity to ride him a little further back and give him time to have a look and wind up down the long Flemington straight.

“We’re looking forward to Saturday as we head towards the Australian Guineas on March 3.”

VERY STRANGE sectionals at Sandown today ...   Every race =   final 600 in very fast time , overall times quite slow .

Are we getting wet tracks half way now and super fast tracks into the straight .
   I've never seen it before.

Strong tail wind down the back and head wind in the straight causes that.

My impression was the Derby lacked a real potential star compared to Gingernuts last year as an obvious example.  That was before the race and after reviewing it still seems that way.  It doesn't mean they can't run well in the Guineas/Derby in Sydney as they do have strength in numbers but I'd be surprised if they came out and matched Tavago/Mongolian Khan/Gingernuts in the ratings, which they'd probably need to vs a consistent performer like Ace High.  I backed Mission Hill in the NZ Derby and while things didn't go right for him, even he's never put anything like Gingernuts Avondale Guineas win on the board yet.

The Oaks this week looks pretty similar to me.  I'm on Marcellina in futures and she looks a real stayer but she'd need to find quite a bit more to be the next Bonneval.  Gold Spice/Treasure are a bit harder to assess as fairly unexposed so could go to new levels.

I definitely think it's a weaker than usual year in the 1400-1600m range in NZ.  I thought that before Embellish and Age Of Fire had their recent unplaced runs where they were cold in the market.  Melody Belle hasn't really produced her best form consistently and has been disappointing in Sydney.
