when my kids were at school I used to tell them to pour water on their school hats at recess and lunch...they got razzed a bit until all the other kids joined in...

we usually end up rescuing birds falling out of trees on 40+ days...

I used to run the Bronte kiosk in Summer...the temperature out back in the chip-frying area, surrounded by pie-ovens and hot-dog makers, reached over 50 degrees...with no proper ventilation...if that didn't fry my brain, nothing would...

sprayer bottles of water and give yourself a spray all over as soon as you start to get hot.  even the cat likes it when it gets to 40 .

Heatwave hell as 5000 dead bats drop from trees in Casino, northern NSW

EXTREME heat has killed thousands bats in northern NSW, with wildlife carers now working around the clock to save hundreds of orphaned babies while council workers clear huge piles of flying fox carcasses.

Temperatures rocketed to 44 degrees in Casino on Saturday, sparking the mass deaths of up to 5000 flying foxes, many of which simply dropped out of trees and were dead before they hit the ground.

In similar scenes, more than 2000 flying foxes perished in the Richmond Valley at the weekend.

There were extraordinary scenes as the bat carcasses began piling up on the ground, sparking warnings to the public not to touch the animals for fear of catching viruses or other illnesses.

Richmond Valley Council workers have been attempting to clear the bodies around central parts of Casino but staff have been unable to reach some outlying locations.

“Some areas along the riverbank are inaccessible and the stench from the rotting carcasses will be quite unbearable for some time yet,” said council manager John Walker.

“People should avoid the area and not try to help living bats themselves as they could bite and scratch and some carry the lyssavirus.”

Lyssavirus is similar to rabies.

we were in Bowraville on Tuesday night, sitting outside in the cool air at dusk, when the bats started to come over !  OMG there were millions of them !  wave after wave swooping and diving at the trees.  quite an amazing sight , as they just kept coming for maybe 15 mins non stop.  dont know where their hang-out was but i bet it smelled pretty terrible.
we went inside to avoid bat poo dropping on us.
today its hotter than yesterday and supposed to stay like this until Monday.  it was 42 in the house here yesterday.

we had a massive mist most of the day on the coast...at one stage you couldn't see past the breakers and it looked like smoke blowing in to shore...and that was at 1pm...

never seemed to hit the projected 35 degrees...

now at 10pm it's quite cold...had to shut the windows as the wind is triggering my asthma...I actually have a hot water bottle tucked behind my back for warmth...

Huge storm last night. Lots of lightning . think it must have started a fire soemwhere as its very smokey this morning and it is smoke, not haze, as you can smell it.  Still hot as, but without the blast furnace wind.
