Kentucky Derby postponed until September 5. Not the first time KDerby has been moved. Happened in 1945 when it was held in June.

Reporting from quiet Atlantic City and living a monastic lifestyle since I got here from OZ. Anyway two qualification races have been run since my last report. Both events were held without any spectators. FairGrounds closed their meet immediately after the Louisiana Derby. Gulfstream Park continues on after yesterday's Florida Derby. NYC is going to use Aqueduct Racecourse as a make shift hospital. Hence next week's The Wood Memorial is postponed. In California, LA County closed down Santa Anita Park on Friday forcing the suspension of next week's Santa Anita Derby. G2 Louisiana Derby 1 3/16 miles Fair Grounds, New Orleans, Louisiana Wells Bayou (16/5) (Lookin At Lucky out of Whispering Angel, by Hard Spun) led throughout to win by 1 1/2 lengths over Ny Traffic with Modernist 3rd over fast finishing Major Fed. All four horses had qualification points prior to the event but with KD Derby now being targetted for the first Saturday in September it will be interesting where these horses will be in 5 months. G1 Florida Derby over 1 1/8 miles @ Gulfstream Park, Hallendale Beach, Florida Stakes were reduced for the event to US$750,000 but this did not stop the event attracting some of the best East Coast 3YOs. Tiz the Law continues his dominance with a emphatic victory by 4 1/2 lengths as the 7/5fav over 80/1 longshot Shiveree and Ete Indien 3rd and Gouverneur Morris in 4th place in a time of 1:50.00 flat. Tiz the Law has top spot on the standings. So whats next? Keeneland has cancelled its meet in Kentucky which would of held the G2 Blue Grass Stakes and the G3 Lexington Stakes. Oaklawn Park has moved the date of the G1 Arkansas Derby to the first Saturday in May taking the Kentucky Derby's spot on the calendar and thus inheriting the prestige of the famed date. Except the distance will be less and there will only be 14 starters but without doubt it will be an over packed entry list. Cheers from AC! |

The first Saturday in May is usually a high profile day in the racing industry in the USA with the expectation of a massive crowd to witness the Kentucky Derby and a host of top graded events. TV monitors and OTB (TABs in the USA) would be clicking on ad nauseam hoping for new records in wagering. But this year was unique... Churchill Downs was silent! No Mint Julips except for the ones that I saw on NBC, which usually hosts the extravaganza and FOX Sports I which had live coverage. Going over the coverage NBC spent 2 hours of Kentucky Derby reruns at the time when the whole of USA is tuned in and then a computer simulation of the 12 Triple Crown winners was presented. I wont mention who one but its fairly obvious! I however was more interested in what was live since Horse Racing has been really the only live sport that has had coverage during the Covid-19 pandemic. So gamblers could get their fix and continue listening. I brought me back in years as when I was a youngster in that radio in the 1960s and 1970s in OZ was full wonderful coverage of the race meetings on hand. With no baseball, basketball, ice hockey, soccer or anything live horse racing (without any spectators) having a dominance of the waves whether air or vision on TV/computer would bring it back to the pre WWII dominance that the sport had. So as reported before the Arkansas Derby was rescheduled to fill the void of a empty first Saturday in May. And although roses were flaunted by FOX Sports the management of Oaklawn Park cashed in by splitting the Arkansas Derby into 2 Divisions after 22 entries were made a week before the draw. Also they moved the G2 Oaklawn Handicap to the date and hence a 13 event card that would of fulfilled every punters thirst. The split divisions of the Arkansas Derby were really written for Californian Hall of Famer trainer Bob Baffert. Since he had two outstanding prospects entered he really did not want to run them against each other. Also had we had a Kentucky Derby that was run on this Saturday one of his horses would not have had enough qualification points to garner a start. Given that the Arkansas Derby was split the trainer would have his entries separated as per rules of division. Charlatan, a winner of a total of 16 length in his two only starts was placed in the first division and Nadal, winner of the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park last start was drawn into the second division. The results were clear and reminder of how Baffert who would of been on the road to win his record 6th Kentucky Derby on Saturday has even a better chance come the first Saturday in September when the event will be held. Charlatan starting as 2/5on favourite blitzed his rivals by 6 lengths in what seemed a super 1:48.49 for the 1 1/8 miles. Shades of 2018 Triple Crown champion Justify. In the second division in a tougher field Nadal (9/10on) outclassed his rivals by 3 lengths even in a faster time of 1:48.34. Tampa Bay derby winner
King Guillermo was second with 62/1 longshot one-eyed Finnick the Fierce holding 3rd. The Oaklawn Handicap which was sandwiched between the two divisions of the Derby was won By My Standards, winning his third race this season ran a time of 1:47.80 which kind of tells you how strong the 3YOs were today. BTW. Santa Anita is to resume May 15 with the Santa Anita Derby set for June 6. Churchill Downs starts their reformed spectatorless meeting also May 15. No word on NYRA and shivers are starting to be felt for the summer meet at Saratoga.

The OZ bred mare Oleksandra (Animal Kingdom - Alexandra Rose by Caesour) was gallant in defeat today in the GII Monrovia Stakes at Santa Anita Park finishing 2nd to the Brazilian mare Jolie Olimpica by 1/2 a length in a fast 1:01.11 over the 5 1/2 furlong trip (~1100 metres).
Oleksandra (5/2) missed the start slightly and settled in her accustomed last position and flew in the latter stages of the race nearly to catch the 9/10on favourite Jolie Olimpica. It would of been interesting if the race would of been held in the regular downhill turf course of about 6 1/2 furlongs but no races have been run on that track since last year. Jolie Olimpica set a track record in the GIII Las Cienegas Stakes in January whe she ran 1:01:00 flat for the 5 1/2 furlongs. Hopefully we'll see them later in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint later this year. |

Have to point out a performance of another OZ bred horse that raced here in California over the Memorial Day long weekend. At Golden Gate Fields outside of San Francisco, OZ bred Kiwi's Dream (Sebring (AUS) - Goldlago (AUS), by Encosta de Lago (AUS) ) starting at 3/2 as the second favourite finished second to the 11/8 favourite Restrainedvengence in the Listed All American Stakes run on the Tapeta All weather surface. Not a bad effort on his first stakes attempt and has a record of 5 wins 2 seconds 2 thirds - Stakes won $122,922 here in the US with 4 of his wins at Golden Gate Fields.

It just goes to show what a difference a change can make. We've had horses out of Australia with stakes placings become Champs in Hong Kong and G1 winners out of Australia not manage to win up there. This lass had three runs for three places in maidens so whether she improved with age or just in a different environment who knows.

OZ bred Paret (Harbour Watch (IRE) - Enduja (AUS), by Encosta de Lago (AUS)) caused a major upset at winning by 2 1/2 lengths 38/1 at Belmont Park (NY) in the Black Type Tiller Stakes over 1 3/8 miles on the turf. That was his 6th start here in the US and first win. |

Update: Kiwi's Dream (AUS) (15/2) ran a bold front running style to just get nipped on the finishing line by Neptune's Storm by a head in the G3 San Francisco Mile Stakes at Golden Gate Fields in a time of 1:35.50. That bettered the performance of OZ bred Shannon in 1948 who finished 3rd as an entry with winner Prevaricator in the inaugural running of the event. However the time for that event was 1:34.40 which equaled the world record at the time! This race has been won by many foreign breds over the years including NZ breds Our Nautique in 2011 and Panzer Chief in 1972.

Thanks Brudder. Always enjoy your posts.
Interestingly the SH bred Kiwi's Dream appears to have absolutely no New Zealand influences in its pedigree.

Field is drawn for the first US unClassic - the truncated 1 1/8 mile Belmont Stakes this Saturday. In fact no Classic around the world is run at this distance. A field of 10 is showing up - half of what would show up for the Kentucky Derby if we were in the normale. But that is not the case. Also since the Arkansas Derby many things have transpired. And that is no surprise either since by this time all the 3YO classics would have been run and the better ones would be taking it easy for the big late summertime features and onward to the fall calendar. Both of Bob Baffert's winners in that split Division of the Arkansas Derby are out. Nadal fractured a leg an Charlatan an ankle injury plus questions of failing a post race swab. Maxwell another fancy is out as well. So we have thinned out - but not without some intrigue in finding a challenger to the Florida Derby winner Tiz the Law who has been installed the 6/5 favourite. |

Thanks Brudder. What a story!
I see her brother Macedonian Ruler was also exported to the USA but is apparently unraced there. Another sibling was sold to Hong Kong/Macau for big money and finished with a race record of 8: 5 - 0 - 1 including a 3rd in the Chairman's Challenge Cup (Mac 1).

What's really interesting is that they clearly changed her style of racing in the USA. Instead of racing up front or handy they chose to drop her right out, and that's clearly paid dividends.
Be great if someone on here would be able to post the video.
