Don't recall a crop of colts so void of predictable talent. The Belmont finish certainly makes the Haskell a more interesting race. For those disappointed in the Triple Crown, the Saratoga meets looks very inviting.

Think it's safe to say now (the season is over Wink) that's the been the case over here too with the 3yo's. so a world wide trend LOL

Thought there was a a chance of a good one early Spring but they just kept on falling over in both the sprinting and staying divisions imho.

Of course as soon as you say that one pops up and becomes a star ...... don't you dare ! Smile

Agree, things will be spotty unless the Distaff side gets exciting. That would mean Songbird would have to race every week or you all send us Winx.

Really the most interesting race was the G3 Belmont Gold Cup Invitational (2 miles) which was won by the Irish bred Red Cardinal...

But that isn't the noteworthy point. The horse is trained by Andreas Wohler (ala Protectionist) and owner by Australian Bloodstock and his mission is this year's Melbourne Cup.  (no surprise!)

Video of his victory can be seen here:

I have noticed that simulcasting of Caulfield last week and Moonee Valley this week is not on the program.

In fact only Flemington is scheduled for the next month.

Looks like MRC, MVRC has put a lock on their product.

A pity. I can't see the replay of those fine races!

This continues to be the case here in the US. The huge race day from Caulfield will once again not be simulcasted here to the US for wagering.

Instead we will have Randwick, Doomben, Newcastle and Morphettville Parks

Thanks from coming MRC....

2018 Road to the Triple Crown

With the New Year brings fresh hopes for those connections hoping to get to the Kentucky in May and further!
These are the point qualification races thus far in 2018 for the Kentucky Derby.

6 January

G3 Sham Stakes over 1 mile @ Santa Anita Park (California) - McKinzie started as the 1/5on prohibitive favourite and won by 3 1/2 in lengths in 1:36.58. Currently he stands in 3rd place in the qualification table. I would probably think that trainer Bob Baffert will keep him California with him to run in the G3 Robert B. Lewis on Feb 3rd or more likely in the G2 San Felipe in March before running in the Santa Anita Derby in April.

13 January

Listed Jerome Stakes over 1 @ Aqueduct Inner Track (NY) - Originally it was scheduled on New's Years Day but due to the extremely cold weather the race was postponed to Jan. 13 - Firenze Fire winner of the 2YO GI Champagne Stakes last year at Belmont Park started as the 2/5on favourite and had to finish gamely over leader Seven Trumpets winning by 1/2 length in the slow time of 1:42.88. Not sure where the connections will point the winner, NYRA has increased the G2 Wood Memorial in April to $1 million if a GI starter shows up, so maybe Firenze Fire will stay in NY instead of going elsewhere. Currently Firenze Fire is in 2nd place in the qualification table.

G3 Lecomte Stakes over 1 mile and 70 yards @ The Fairgrounds (New Orleans, LA) - California based Instilled Regard shipped to the Big Easy and started 9/4 impressingly defeating the 6/5 favourite Principe Guiherme by 3 3/4 lengths in a time of 1:42.59. Instilled Regard avoided facing McKinzie who he faced late last year in the G1 Los Alamitos Futurity so connections made a wise decision to leave the West Coast. Instilled Regard is currently in 6th place.

15 January

Listed Smarty Jones Stakes over 1 mile @ Oaklawn Park (Arkansas) - Another Bob Baffert Californian shipper Mourinho (US) sparks a fine result. Cheekily he's named after a Group Stakes winner in our own OZ ;) but that lets not take anything away from the winner who lead all the way for a 3 1/4 length win as the 3/5on favourite in 1:37.25 over Combatant. Mourinho (US) is currently in 10th place and Combatant is in 11th place.

Next qualification races - Feb. 3rd
G2 Holy Bull Stakes @ Gulfstream Park 1 1/16 miles
G3 Withers Stakes @ Aqueduct 1 1/16 miles
G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes @ Santa Anita Park 1 1/16 miles

Yes, I'll keep that in mind as we move forward...

The really big day next in the US is the 2nd rendition of the Pegasus Invitational which is has been bumped to US$16 million.

Gun Runner, the 2017 Breeders' Cup Classic winner will be having his last start before going to Three Chimneys will be the overwhelming favourite.

Gulfstream Park Jan 27th AA.

Run on same basis as the Everest (some would say NSW pinched the idea from there)

I would think it would be telecast on Sky.

Last year's version, won by Arrogate, certainly was.

There is a slight not here the G1 Pegasus Invitational. The race is registered as the Donn Handicap which was the premier dirt race at Gulfstream Park for many a year.

The Everest, was a complete new race and thus it was ungraded. Although we all know that the participants in the race were of the highest quality. I'm sure the event will quickly be reclassified and undoubtedly will on day be Group 1.
