A note about the G1 Arlington Million winner Bricks and Mortar (1/2on) who beat the gallant mare Magic Wand in a super time of 1:59.44. The trainer Chad Brown won all three Grade 1s on the card which was a first time occurrence at the track. Also Bricks and Mortar's breeding rights were bought earlier in the week by Shadai Farm in Japan as a replacement for Deep Impact. If all goes to plan you will be hearing about the offspring soon or later in Australia

This weekend the two big races are both over the Classic distance of 1 1/4 miles when3YO fillies show up for the $600,000 G1 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga and the older males clash in the $1,000,000 G1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar. Dunbar Road is the favourite at Saratoga while Curlin's daughter Point of Honor is the best bred for the distance. The Pacific Classic is a bit short of top performers. This wide open renewal of the race IMO will be won by an outsider. |

Yesterday the Australian bred Oleksandra (4/1) won the Listed Smart N Fancy Stakes at Saratoga over 5 1/2f on the turf (wet but firm track) in the fast time of 1:00.40.

The track record was just recently broken by Leinster on Aug 3, in a time of 1:00.23 and then again by Carotari on Aug 17 in a new time 1:00.21. They are flying! Whats real impressive with Oleksandra's win was that she was dead last on settling and still last as they entered the straight. Oleksandra (AUS) is entered in the US$1/2 million G3T Spendthrinft Ladies Sprint (6 1/2F) at Kentucky Downs and is the 3/1 morning line favourite. Kentucky Downs is a unique racecourse by US standards as it is all turf and it encapsulates the rolling meadows seen in the UK. The race meeting is short but the that stakes offered make it the most lucrative actually in the US especially for those bred in Kentucky. The track location is actually closer to Nashville, Tennessee than major Kentucky cities. |

Big weekend @ Parx Racing formerly known as Philadelphia Park. Two one million US$ race. One for 3YO fillies and the other is the G1 Pennsylvannia Derby. Maximum Security unfortunate scratch due to a colic attack which leaves six other starters. G1 Preakness winner War of Will and G1 Arkansas Derby runner up Improbable who returned with a nice prep win at Del Mar last month. Trainer Baffert doesn't send them east often so this one will be very close IMO.

A few big races yesterday worth mentioning here since a few were in the category of Breeders' Cup "You Win And Are In". Small Fields @ Belmont Park G1 Jockey Gold Cup was won by the 3yo Code of Honor who won the G1 Travers Stakes with the help of the stewards on protest over the 4yo Vino Rosso. Actually it is a great battle down the straight. Mare Midnight Bisou (1/6on) won her 6 straight this year and has really been outstanding winning the G2 Beldame Stakes. The G1 Vosborgh Stakes over 6f was also a great tussle with on 4 horses starting. Only a nose separated NY bred Imperial Hint over battler Firenze Fire. Santa Anita opened Friday with a couple G1 2YO races but once again it was marred on Saturday with an another horse breaking down. Not good as we head into the Breeders' Cup in 5 weeks time.

On the day it was announced that classic winner and champion Animal Kingdom had been sold to interests in Japan, his Australian bred daughter Oleksandra (AUS) kept the stallion in the headlines for another reason by winning the $150,000 G3T Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes Oct. 11 at Keeneland.
Typical of her style and that of her sire, who closed from off the pace to win the 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), Oleksandra (AUS) was far behind early. She settled in ninth under Joel Rosario, 7 1/2 lengths behind speedster Girls Know Best, who sprang away from the starting gate to lead with fractions of :21.73 and :44.17 for a half-mile in the 5 1/2-furlong race on the firm turf. Another breathe taking performance! |

Tomorrow's G1 Grand National Hurdle at Far Hills, NJ will have an interesting runner, Wicklow Brave (GB) winner of his last three starts in Ireland is the 3/1 morning line favourite. Two years ago on his second trip Down Under he was a runner in the G1 Caulfield Cup where he finished 12th before running in the G1 Melbourne Cup and finishing 10th. |

maybe I should mention. The Germanbred mare Durance (Champs Elysses-Djidda by Lando) ran a secondplace in the E.P. Taylor Stakes , Gr.1, Woodbine in Canada and Alounak (Camelot-Awestruck by Rail Link)(bred in France, but German ownership) was secondplaced in the 'Canadanian International Stakes', Gr.1, e racetrack. regards, Ticino |

While VRC Derby Day IMO is the best day of racing it will be held on the same day as the Breeders' Cup in the USA. Aidan O'Brien trained Magical following her tenacious triumph in the G1 QIPCO Champion Stakes (British Champions Middle Distance, G1) at Ascot is headed for a tilt G1T Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. G1 Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck is set for the longer distance G1T Longines Breeders' Cup Turf over 1 1/2 miles.

Any breakdowns may well bring a vote for getting rid of horse racing in California. From this year they need 623k signatures - so pretty doable especially if one or two big financial backers go for it. Sad thing is that the racing in US has really brought it upon itself - even with the likes of Weir, McLean and Currie, US racing is way worse with legal drug use and crappy unforgiving dirt tracks - plus publis statements by trainers insisting drugs are needed to keep the horse racing. From what I see living here for 2 years, unless you really follow it, you have no awareness of it at all unlike the other major sports, so why not vote against it once the adverts for Prop xx are on TV with dead horses splashed on the screen.

They are very close/in LA - scrub fire very near the Getty Museum. Getty is 30 mins (10km) from Beverly Wilshire Hotel, less than 4km from UCLA - the biggest university. LeBron James left his home and he is suburb next to Beverly Hills. Another fire today at Calabasas - home territory for Kardashians.
In Northern Cal, they are more in the vineyard territory, but came very close to the water in north part of the Bay. 2 weeks ago suburbs near me in heart of Silicon Valley had electricity cut from fear that winds would bring wires down and spark a fire. This area is really dry from May to now. All the road verges aside from the manicured streets are tinder dry. Once you get outside the manicured stuff there is a lot of scrub that can light up very easily. Big issue here is that PG & E the major electricity company has declared bankruptcy from lawsuits in 2017, and they are then 'ensuring' they cannot be blamed for contributing to this lot of fires, but from what I have read they have been at best incompetent with the risks here.

Breeders' Cup Classic Vino Rosso (9/2) (Curlin – Mythical Bride) by 4 1/2 lengths over favourite McKinzie with Higher Power third and the mare Elate running in fourth, Math Wizard was the best 3YO finishing in 5th. Breeders' Cup Turf Bricks and Mortar (Evens) (Giant's Causeway - Beyond the Wave) flew home to win by a head over 50/1 longshot United with Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck in third.

The obvious winner of the male sprinter award should also win the older dirt male Eclipse with only Vino Rosso, his chief rival for that award, won two Grade 1 races this season. The 3YO champion is really up in the air after both Code of Honor (Classic) nor Omaha Beach (Dirt Mile) helped their case failing in their quest for victory. This now gives Maximum Security some chance as he has been victorious since his KD Derby DQ. Midnight Bisou defeat suffering her only loss of the season in at the hand of Argentine bred Blue Prize in the G1 Breeders' Cup Distaff effectively ended her Horse of the Year bid. Midnight Bisou will still no doubt win the Older Dirt Female championship. I'll add that 3YO filly Covfefe is a lock for the Female Sprint Champion and has a good case to also be the 3 Year Old Female Champion.

Just to note we did have a breakdown during the Breeders' Cup and it happened in the high profile Classic when Mongolian Groom injured his hind leg as they entered the straight. I was not pretty as the race was on National TV... It was not very much publicized but the worst case scenario happened in the last Breeders' Cup race after what seemed to be a very calm 2 days. I really think the Breeders' Cup should think about avoiding this venue.

Agree - but frankly I think this is a broader issue. the stats show clearly enough that dirt is the harshest of surfaces and throw in the trainers' so actively using drugs banned everywhere else to what I see as the detriment of the horses. The synthetic surfaces dropped the fatality rate but due to breeding interests and trainers resistance it reverted. It would be ironic if one of the major states banned racing - the breeders will be rather more screwed if that happens. I think US racing has done a great job creating its own problems which dwarves those generated by the likes of McLean and Weir. I have followed horse racing since I was 5, and wherever I moved to - UK, France, Dubai I follow it plus keep an eye on the other countries I know, until I moved to US - do not watch it at all as I find nothing that appeals (sorry!), so just get home on Friday evening and with the internet and TGV follow the Australian racing.

Argentine bred Blue Prize winner of the G1 Breeders' Cup Distaff was shipped to Kentucky after the race and was sold today at the Fasig-Tipton sales for US$5 million. The interested buyer was none other than Larry Best of OXO Equine, who decided then and there that he wouldn't be leaving the auction without the multiple grade 1 winner. Although he had not intended to buy any stock beyond a few weanlings he had already shortlisted, Blue Prize offered too much value for Best's budding broodmare band to pass up. "I wasn't intending on buying this horse but about two days ago I was walking, it was a beautiful sunny day, and this horse just shipped in," said Best. "She just looked so gorgeous—probably the most beautiful horse I've ever seen. "I'm now a breeder and I now have a Breeders' Cup champion," laughed Best. "This may be the only way I ever get one." |

First Japanese race Cattleya Sho (1600m) for qualification to the 2020 Kentucky Derby was won by Dieu du Vin (Declaration of War - Jealous Cat out of Tapit) ridden by no other than Lanfranco Dettori (looks the little suspension after the Melbourne Cup invigorated him) Looking forward to seeing this one in the spring!
