A note about the G1 Arlington Million winner Bricks and Mortar (1/2on) who beat the gallant mare Magic Wand in a super time of 1:59.44. The trainer Chad Brown won all three Grade 1s on the card which was a first time occurrence at the track.

Also Bricks and Mortar's breeding rights were bought earlier in the week by Shadai Farm in Japan as a replacement for Deep Impact. If all goes to plan you will be hearing about the offspring soon or later in Australia

This weekend the two big races are both over the Classic distance of 1 1/4 miles when3YO fillies show up for the $600,000 G1 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga and the older males clash in the $1,000,000 G1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar.

Dunbar Road is the favourite at Saratoga while Curlin's daughter Point of Honor is the best bred for the distance.

The Pacific Classic is a bit short of top performers. This wide open renewal of the race IMO will be won by an outsider.

Did they use an alarm clock on Oleksandra Brudder, 1-00-4 for 5 1/2 f?

The track record was just recently broken by Leinster on Aug 3, in a time of 1:00.23 and then again by Carotari on Aug 17 in a new time 1:00.21.

They are flying!

Whats real impressive with Oleksandra's win was that she was dead last on settling and still last as they entered the straight.

Check the video out!

The highlight of the Saratoga meet this Satuday is the "The Mid-Summer Derby" otherwise known as the G1 Travers Stakes over 1 1/4.

No Maximum Security or Game Winner as both as still not 100% but the field is full of horses who were present in the Triple Crown races in the spring.

 2. Code of Honor, 4-1 (Noble Mission – Shug McGaughey/John Velazquez – 7: 3-2-1):
 3. Highest Honors, 10-1 (Tapit – Chad Brown/Luis Saez – 3: 2-1-0):
 4. Laughing Fox, 30-1 (Union Rags – Steve Asmussen/Ricardo Santana Jr.) – 9: 3-0-0):
 5. Everfast, 30-1 (Take Charge Indy – Dale Romans/Martin Chuan – 13: 1-2-1):
 6. Tacitus, 5-2 (Tapit – William Mott/Jose Ortiz – 7: 3-2-1):
 7. Mucho Gusto, 6-1 (Mucho Macho Man – Bob Baffert/Joe Talamo– 8: 5-2-1):
 8. Chess Chief, 30-1 (Into Mischief – Dallas Stewart/Mike Smith – 10: 1-1-1):

11. Endorsed, 15-1 (Medaglia D'Oro – Kiaran McLaughlin/Joel Rosario – 4: 2-1-0):

Oleksandra (AUS) is entered in the US$1/2 million G3T Spendthrinft Ladies Sprint (6 1/2F) at Kentucky Downs and is the 3/1 morning line favourite.

Kentucky Downs is a unique racecourse by US standards as it is all turf and it encapsulates the rolling meadows seen in the UK. The race meeting is short but the that stakes offered make it the most lucrative actually in the US especially for those bred in Kentucky. The track location is actually closer to Nashville, Tennessee than major Kentucky cities.

Big weekend @ Parx Racing formerly known as Philadelphia Park.
Two one million US$ race.

One for 3YO fillies and the other is the G1 Pennsylvannia Derby.

Maximum Security unfortunate scratch due to a colic attack which leaves six other starters.
G1 Preakness winner War of Will and G1 Arkansas Derby runner up Improbable who returned with a nice prep win at Del Mar last month. Trainer Baffert doesn't send them east often so this one will be very close IMO.

A few big races yesterday worth mentioning here since a few were in the category of Breeders' Cup "You Win And Are In".

Small Fields @ Belmont Park

G1 Jockey Gold Cup was won by the 3yo Code of Honor who won the G1 Travers Stakes with the help of the stewards on protest over the 4yo Vino Rosso.  Actually it is a great battle down the straight.

Mare Midnight Bisou (1/6on) won her 6 straight this year and has really been outstanding winning the G2 Beldame Stakes.

The G1 Vosborgh Stakes over 6f was also a great tussle with on 4 horses starting. Only a nose separated NY bred Imperial Hint over battler Firenze Fire.

Santa Anita opened Friday with a couple G1 2YO races but once again it was marred on Saturday with an another horse breaking down. Not good as we head into the Breeders' Cup in 5 weeks time.

On the day it was announced that classic winner and champion Animal Kingdom had been sold to interests in Japan, his Australian bred daughter Oleksandra (AUS) kept the stallion in the headlines for another reason by winning the $150,000 G3T Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes Oct. 11 at Keeneland.

Typical of her style and that of her sire, who closed from off the pace to win the 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), Oleksandra (AUS) was far behind early. She settled in ninth under Joel Rosario, 7 1/2 lengths behind speedster Girls Know Best, who sprang away from the starting gate to lead with fractions of :21.73 and :44.17 for a half-mile in the 5 1/2-furlong race on the firm turf.

Another breathe taking performance!

Tomorrow's G1 Grand National Hurdle at Far Hills, NJ will have an interesting runner, Wicklow Brave (GB) winner of his last three starts in Ireland is the 3/1 morning line favourite.

Two years ago on his second trip Down Under he was a runner in the G1 Caulfield Cup where he finished 12th before running in the G1 Melbourne Cup and finishing 10th.

Hello,
maybe I should mention. The Germanbred mare Durance (Champs Elysses-Djidda by Lando) ran a
secondplace in the E.P. Taylor Stakes , Gr.1, Woodbine in Canada and Alounak (Camelot-Awestruck by Rail Link)(bred in France, but German ownership) was secondplaced  in the 'Canadanian International Stakes', Gr.1, e racetrack.

While VRC Derby Day IMO is the best day of racing it will be held on the same day as the Breeders' Cup in the USA.

Aidan O'Brien trained Magical following her tenacious triumph in the G1 QIPCO Champion Stakes (British Champions Middle Distance, G1) at Ascot is headed for a tilt G1T Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
G1 Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck is set for the longer distance G1T Longines Breeders' Cup Turf over 1 1/2 miles.

Breeders' Cup Friday - Juvenile Day

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint

Is this a matter of which Wesley Ward? He trains the top two choices on the morning line, and somewhat surprisingly, favoritism leans toward Four Wheel Drive as opposed to the filly Kimari, who has already beaten the boys when circling the field to win Keeneland's Indian Summer. Ward's third runner, Cambria, has the outside post.

1. Chimney Rock (10-1)
2. Band Practice (12-1)
3. Another Miracle (15-1)
4. Dream Shot (15-1)
5. Encoder (15-1)
6. Alligator Alley (12-1)
7. Kimari (7-2)
8. Dr Simpson (15-1)
9. Four Wheel Drive (3-1)
10. A'Ali (6-1)
11. King Neptune (15-1)
12. Cambria (12-1)

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf

A rare American Grade 1 on the grass Chad Brown hasn't won, this field is less surprisingly led by the Aiden O'Brien-trained Arizona. That colt was second to Europe's top 2-year-old, Pinatubo, though over some soft ground. Structor carries Brown's hopes.

1. Our Country (15-1)
2. Structor (5-1)
3. Peace Achieved (10-1)
4. Decorated Invader (4-1)
5. Vitalogy (10-1)
6. Graceful Kitten (15-1)
7. Andesite (12-1)
8. Billy Batts (20-1)
9. Gear Jockey (20-1)
10. War Beast (20-1)
11. Proven Strategies (30-1)
12. Arizona (5-2)
13. Fort Myers (12-1)
14. Hit the Road (10-1)

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies

Debut winner Donna Veloce attracted morning line favoritism when taking a big step up here. It'll be interesting what happens when the betting actually opens. Grade 1 winner Bast has won over the course, while the jockey barely budged aboard Wicked Whisper when she won the Frizette (G1) around one turn.

1. Donna Veloce (3-1)
2. Two Sixty (15-1)
3. Perfect Alibi (10-1)
4. British Idiom (7-2)
5. Lazy Daisy (12-1)
6. Bast (7-2)
7. Wicked Whisper (7-2)
8. K P Dreamin (20-1)
9. Comical (8-1)

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

The Americans typically dominate this race, but this one appears wide open, with Sweet Melania leading the way domestically. Before betting, do yourself a favor and check the overseas markets. You might find some value on these lightly raced fillies shipping in from Europe.

1. Living In The Past (15-1)
2. Croughavouke (20-1)
3. Shadn (10-1)
4. Abscond (15-1)
5. Daahyeh (5-1)
6. Unforgettable (20-1)
7. Crystalle (8-1)
8. Tango (10-1)
9. Albigna (9-2)
10. Fair Maiden (12-1)
11. Sharing (12-1)
12. Sweet Melania (5-1)
13. Selflessly (8-1)
14. Etoile (12-1)

Breeders' Cup Juvenile

Most importantly the race carries qualification points for the G1 Kentucky Derby.
The rail draw by favorite Dennis' Moment sticks out here. He's not a speed type anyway, though, and might handle getting shuffled back. In this highly anticipated feature, Eight Rings drew best of the Big 3, as he'll show speed from the No. 6 post. Maxfield, the other horse of note, is a closer.

1. Dennis' Moment (8-5)
2. Wrecking Crew (20-1)
3. Shoplifted (20-1)
4. Storm the Court (20-1)
5. Scabbard (8-1)
6. Eight Rings (2-1)
7. Anneau D'or (15-1)
8. Full Flat (30-1)
9. Maxfield (3-1)

Breeders' Cup Saturday - Part I

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

The last time 3-year-old Covfefe faced older competition, she burned out on the inside while in a speed duel with Mia Mischief. Might the same scenario play out Saturday? Come Dancing will give the favorite everything she wants here in one of the deepest editions of the Filly & Mare Sprint we've seen.

1. Covfefe (2-1)
2. Danuska's My Girl (20-1)
3. Heavenhasmynikki (20-1)
4. Come Dancing (5-2)
5. Lady Ninja (10-1)
6. Bellafina (6-1)
7. Selcourt (10-1)
8. Dawn the Destroyer (12-1)
9. Spiced Perfection (4-1)

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

Stormy Liberal seeks his third straight victory in this race, looking to match Goldikova's unique run of wins in the Mile in Breeders' Cup history. But a number of horses have a case to be made, especially those exiting lucrative races at Kentucky Downs. Eddie Haskell, a local charge, relishes this five-furlong setup, too, given the downhill turf is out of commission.

1. Totally Boss (5-1)
2. Pure Sensation (5-1)
3. Imprimis (8-1)
4. Shekky Shebaz (12-1)
5. Stubbins (12-1)
6. Stormy Liberal (8-1)
7. Leinster (8-1)
8. Legends of War (20-1)
9. Final Frontier (6-1)
10. Eddie Haskell (9-2)
11. Om (15-1)
12. Belvoir Bay (12-1)

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

After seeing some favorites stuck down on the rail earlier in the evening, Omaha Beach won't offer an excuse from this post. Plenty of 3-year-old competition awaits with Bob Baffert bullish on Improbable, Spun to Run having posted a huge number last time and Mr. Money backing up in distance in a race his sire, Goldencents, twice won.

1. Giant Expectations (12-1)
2. Improbable (3-1)
3. Spun to Run (6-1)
4. Mr. Money (6-1)
5. Omaha Beach (8-5)
6. Ambassadorial (30-1)
7. Coal Front (6-1)
8. Blue Chipper (20-1)
9. Diamond Oops (15-1)
10. Snapper Sinclair (30-1)

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf

Single Sistercharlie and move on? It'll be that simple for some in this spot, and the draw helps that case given Thais, a stablemate that often helps her set the pace, is perfectly positioned to be controlling speed. Mrs. Sippy, for trainer Graham Motion, appears to be moving in the right direction and may be worth a look. In the absence of Magical, retired Monday, O'Brien will look for his first Filly & Mare Turf with Fleeting.

1. Iridessa (8-1)
2. Sistercharlie (8-5)
3. Fleeting (6-1)
4. Billesdon Brook (10-1)
5. Mirth (20-1)
6. Thais (30-1)
7. Vasilika (8-1)
8. Castle Lady (15-1)
9. Villa Marina (8-1)
10. Mrs. Sippy (8-1)
11. Just Wonderful (20-1)
12. Fanny Logan (15-1)

Any breakdowns may well bring a vote for getting rid of horse racing in California. From this year they need 623k signatures - so pretty doable especially if one or two big financial backers go for it. Sad thing is that the racing in US has really brought it upon itself - even with the likes of Weir, McLean and Currie, US racing is way worse with legal drug use and crappy unforgiving dirt tracks - plus publis statements by trainers insisting drugs are needed to keep the horse racing. From what I see living here for 2 years, unless you really follow it, you have no awareness of it at all unlike the other major sports, so why not vote against it once the adverts for Prop xx are on TV with dead horses splashed on the screen.

They are very close/in LA - scrub fire very near the Getty Museum. Getty is 30 mins (10km) from Beverly Wilshire Hotel, less than 4km from UCLA - the biggest university.  LeBron James left his home and he is suburb next to Beverly Hills. Another fire today at Calabasas - home territory for Kardashians.

In Northern Cal, they are more in the vineyard territory, but came very close to the water in north part of the Bay.  2 weeks ago suburbs near me in heart of Silicon Valley had electricity cut from fear that winds would bring wires down and spark a fire. This area is really dry from May to now. All the road verges aside from the manicured streets are tinder dry.  Once you get outside the manicured stuff there is a lot of scrub that can light up very easily.

Big issue here is that PG & E the major electricity company has declared bankruptcy from lawsuits in 2017, and they are then 'ensuring' they cannot be blamed for contributing to this lot of fires, but from what I have read they have been at best incompetent with the risks here.

Breeders' Cup Saturday - Part II

Breeders' Cup Sprint

Was Imperial Hint just right last summer at Saratoga when he took an outside draw, wore down Mitole and won the Vanderbilt (G1)? That's what handicappers will have to ask themselves if trying to defeat this favorite. Shancelot adds to a hot pace scenario, while the price is right if you like closers Whitmore and Hog Creek Hustle.

1. Catalina Cruiser (4-1)
2. Hog Creek Hustle (20-1)
3. Firenze Fire (12-1)
4. Mitole (9-5)
5. Engage (15-1)
6. Shancelot (4-1)
7. Whitmore (15-1)
8. Landeskog (12-1)
9. Imperial Hint (4-1)
10. Matera Sky (30-1)

Breeders' Cup Mile

Will it be a Tepin-like Saturday for the Mark Casse barn? The Grade 1-winning filly Got Stormy enters off a defeat but had her reasons in the Woodbine Mile (G1). She'll look to beat the boys in a race that, more often than not, has gone to U.S. runners over their European counterparts. Another female runner, Brown-trained Uni, shares the 7-2 price off a record performance at Keeneland. O'Brien's shipper, Circus Maximus, is the favorite.

1. Suedois (20-1)
2. Lucullan (12-1)
3. Space Traveller (12-1)
4. Trais Fluors (20-1)
5. True Valour (20-1)
6. Got Stormy (7-2)
7. Bolo (30-1)
8. El Tormenta (12-1)
9. Circus Maximus (3-1)
10. Without Parole (20-1)
11. Uni (7-2)
12. Lord Glitters (12-1)
13. Hey Gaman (12-1)
14. Bowies Hero (12-1)

Breeders' Cup Distaff (7 p.m.)

Midnight Bisou will look to call it a career with an unbeaten season and potential Horse of the Year bid in the first edition of the Distaff at Santa Anita since it was Beholder vs. Songbird back in 2016. This year's favorite is 7-for-7 in 2019 and will have to tangle with a trio of Grade 1-winning 3-year-olds: Street Band, Dunbar Road and Serengeti Empress. No post position complaints here, as Paradise Woods could well clear her competition early from the rail.

1. Paradise Woods (5-1)
2. Ollie's Candy (15-1)
3. Street Band (10-1)
4. Midnight Bisou (6-5)
5. Dunbar Road (6-1)
6. Wow Cat (15-1)
7. Secret Spice (10-1)
8. La Force (30-1)
9. Serengeti Empress (12-1)
10. Mo See Cal (30-1)
11. Blue Prize (6-1)

Breeders' Cup Turf

O'Brien will look to extend his dominance over this race, but he won't be expected to with Bricks and Mortar, another unbeaten (in 2019) Horse of the Year candidate tackling the Turf. Bricks and Mortar will go the longest distance of his career in this 1 1/2-mile feature. Godolphin's Old Persian appears formidable at a nice third choice price having just shipped in to win a Grade 1 race at Woodbine as a prep.

1. Zulu Alpha (20-1)
2. Acclimate (20-1)
3. United (20-1)
4. Mount Everest (15-1)
5. Anthony Van Dyck (3-1)
6. Channel Cat (15-1)
7. Alounak (20-1)
8. Bandua (20-1)
9. Bricks and Mortar (9-5)
10. Old Persian (4-1)
11. Arklow (12-1)
12. Channel Maker (10-1)

Breeders' Cup Classic

Morning line maker Jon White established McKinzie as his favorite, but at 3-1 that's a tepid price. This isn't the toughest field to ever line up for the Classic, but it's certainly shaping up as an intriguing betting race. Stuck outside are the top east coast invaders as the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) 1-2 finishers Vino Rosso and Code of Honor will keep tight company again, this time in the Classic starting gate. Elate, the mare, will look to replicate the great Zenyatta's feat as a lady to beat the boys at Santa Anita 10 years later.

1. Math Wizard (30-1)
2. Seeking the Soul (20-1)
3. Owendale (15-1)
4. War of Will (20-1)
5. Yoshida (8-1)
6. Elate (6-1)
7. Higher Power (6-1)
8. McKinzie (3-1)
9. Mongolian Groom (12-1)
10. Vino Rosso (4-1)
11. Code of Honor (4-1)

Breeders' Cup Classic
Vino Rosso (9/2) (Curlin  – Mythical Bride) by 4 1/2 lengths over favourite McKinzie with Higher Power third and the mare Elate running in fourth, Math Wizard was the best 3YO finishing in 5th.

Breeders' Cup Turf
Bricks and Mortar (Evens)  (Giant's Causeway - Beyond the Wave) flew home to win by a head over 50/1 longshot United with Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck in third.

Eclipse Award implications from Breeders' Cup:

Bricks and Mortar 10 victories from 12 starts in his career never run the 1 1/2 mile distance collect the Eclipse for Horse of the Year is favourite to join Wise Dan, Kotashaan, and John Henry as the only grass horses to win the title in the Breeders' Cup era.

Mitole, G1 Breeders' Cup Sprint with his fourth Grade 1 victory this season, finished the year 6-for-7 overall. The obvious winner of the male sprinter award should also win the older dirt male Eclipse with only Vino Rosso, his chief rival for that award, won two Grade 1 races this season.

The 3YO champion is really up in the air after both Code of Honor (Classic) nor Omaha Beach (Dirt Mile) helped their case failing in their quest for victory. This now gives Maximum Security some chance as he has been victorious since his KD Derby DQ.

Midnight Bisou defeat suffering her only loss of the season in at the hand of Argentine bred Blue Prize in the G1 Breeders' Cup Distaff effectively ended her Horse of the Year bid.
Midnight Bisou will still no doubt win the Older Dirt Female championship.

I'll add that 3YO filly Covfefe is a lock for the Female Sprint Champion and has a good case to also be the 3 Year Old Female Champion.

Just to note we did have a breakdown during the Breeders' Cup and it happened in the high profile Classic when Mongolian Groom injured his hind leg as they entered the straight.

I was not pretty as the race was on National TV...

It was not very much publicized but the worst case scenario happened in the last Breeders' Cup race after what seemed to be a very calm 2 days.

I really think the Breeders' Cup should think about avoiding this venue.

Agree - but frankly I think this is a broader issue. the stats show clearly enough that dirt is the harshest of surfaces and throw in the trainers' so actively using drugs banned everywhere else to what I see as the detriment of the horses.    The synthetic surfaces dropped the fatality rate but due to breeding interests and trainers resistance it reverted.  It would be ironic if one of the major states banned racing - the breeders will be rather more screwed if that happens.   I think US racing has done a great job creating its own problems which dwarves those generated by the likes of McLean and Weir. I have followed horse racing since I was 5, and wherever I moved to - UK, France, Dubai I follow it plus keep an eye on the other countries I know, until I moved to US - do not watch it at all as I find nothing that appeals (sorry!), so just get home on Friday evening and with the internet and TGV follow the Australian racing.

Argentine bred Blue Prize winner of the G1 Breeders' Cup Distaff was shipped to Kentucky after the race and was sold today at the Fasig-Tipton sales for US$5 million.

The interested buyer was none other than Larry Best of OXO Equine, who decided then and there that he wouldn't be leaving the auction without the multiple grade 1 winner. Although he had not intended to buy any stock beyond a few weanlings he had already shortlisted, Blue Prize offered too much value for Best's budding broodmare band to pass up.

"I wasn't intending on buying this horse but about two days ago I was walking, it was a beautiful sunny day, and this horse just shipped in," said Best. "She just looked so gorgeous—probably the most beautiful horse I've ever seen.

"I'm now a breeder and I now have a Breeders' Cup champion," laughed Best. "This may be the only way I ever get one."

Nice little story about G1 Breeders' Cup Fillies and Mare Sprint champion Covfefe  named after the famous mistweet by the POTUS.

(I really should of put this in the President Trump thread)

First Japanese race Cattleya Sho (1600m) for qualification to the 2020 Kentucky Derby was won by Dieu du Vin (Declaration of War - Jealous Cat out of Tapit) ridden by no other than Lanfranco Dettori (looks the little suspension after the Melbourne Cup invigorated him)

Looking forward to seeing this one in the spring!
