Still amazing. "I said to Hank Williams, "How lonely does it get?"/ Hank Williams hasn't answered yet/ But I hear him coughing all night long/ A thousand floors above me/ In the Tower of Song." |

It's only just occurred to me how much another one of my favourite songs rips off the tune of Lost Highway. Maybe it was a deliberate nod to it, or maybe just the Irish thing of seeing music as open slather.
Whale, you know I can't play clips, so could you paste in Dirty Old Town by the Pogues? Top 10 song ever recorded in my opinion. |

Oh my , what a total rip off, not much effort to disguise it either . Bands have lost millions in court for plagiarism much less than that

My favourite Pogues song. Though my obsession with The Wire may have something to do with it:

...and by the way, Dirty Old Town is a Pogue’s cover of an old Eamon McColl song, originally written in 1949. So who’s ripped off who?

To tell the truth I had never heard Lost Highway before I stumbled across it today and did not realise was a fantastic, influential country artist Williams was. But I googled Eaamon McColl, could not find any reference to him. Did find this though and it seems Williams never claimed he wrote the song, people simply assumed he did: 3. Lost HighwayWilliams’ reputation today rests, in part, on his status as the artist who cemented the notion that the singer and the song had to be indivisible if the effect on the listener was to have sufficient resonance and depth. Yet Williams was also a fine interpreter of others’ songs, so much so that Lost Highway, written by Leon “I Love You Because” Payne, is often mistaken for a Williams original. The song’s protagonist seems to have ambled straight out of the dustbowl, an everyman doomed by luckless love to roam, rootless and alone, in constant search of redemptive purpose. Williams’ own struggle to reconcile the sacred and the profane certainly helped him wear Payne’s song as if it were one of Nudie Cohn’s trademark suits, but it’s his voice – cracked, careworn but never tired – that makes this the definitive reading of an all-time classic, and a high point in a career that had more than its share. |

Sorry, Ewan MaColl. Dirty Old Town is cover. The Pogues are just one in a long line who've covered it.

Leon Payne wrote Lost Highway in 1948, McColl wrote Dirty Old Town in 1949, pretty obvious which song was plagiarised

This is interesting- Pogues singer Shane MacGowan obviously a fan of Lost Highway, may explain the Pogues' interpretation of Dirty Old Town:
It was impossible not to be knocked out by the emotion of MacGowan's performance, especially in such an intimate venue, and the room was silent as he started with Hank Williams's "Lost Highway", before playing the Pogues classics "Pair of Brown Eyes" and "Dirty Old Town" and a cover of Sam Cooke's "Cupid" that felt appropriately funny on this spring night. MacGowan and Doherty worked surprisingly well together, their voices complementing each other perfectly. |

I was watching a documentary about Hank Williams. His manager, record producer, Fred Rose often changed some of his tunes slightly in order to avoid copyright breaches. "Borrowing " from other songs is more common than I thought.
Probably musicians are influenced by music they have heard , maybe subconsciously. Doesn't detract from his legacy though.
