To state the bloody obvious, this is a serious rising 3yo!

Had him down as very good after his last start win where he looked to do it all too easy and looked very smart to the eye, and I was confident he was a good thing today however the plunge on Casino Fourteen says he has beaten a very good one. He has treated Casino Fourteen with contempt - gave him a good start and a thorough beating.

Is this a Caulfield Guineas horse? Looks to more than capable of extending to a mile with the way he hits the line. Superbly bred but not necessarily a miler pedigree - by Fastnet Rock out of Legally Bay, who was a sprinter from my recollection? Legally Bay was an expensive yearling and a beautiful filly from memory.

In the right hands - one might even call him a 'master trainer!' He'll ensure this colt reaches his full potential and he'll target the Caulfield Guineas if he's good enough. Timing is fine. They go to the Caulfield Guineas off a Brisbane winter prep through races like the Sires and TJ Smith up there.

He may even go to Brisbane. Maher says the trip to Sydney for the Sires - which he didn't get a run in - seasoned the horse. So maybe he won't want another trip, and a long one at that from Melbourne to Brisbane. They could be temped by a 2yo G1 win though, which would make him a very valuable colt.

Looks a 3yo type to my eye though. So I'd rather see him put away and target the 3yo spring riches and see how he measures up.

The only problem I have with a possible Brisbane trip is it would entail them keeping up for a long time.

The Sires is 27th May

JJ Atkins is 10th June

If they want another run, The Sires Produce in Adelaide would be ideal.

He's being spelled.

Is he good enough for a Caulfield Guineas? Switched off when he got to the front, still a lot to learn.

Had to wait four months but it will be worth it.

Looks a special tomorrow. Hopped on at $5 all-in with Sportsbet, then TAB obliged with $7 all-in and took that as well - all thanks to the mystery around Catchy running/not running.

Drawn well which is what we wanted to ensure he gets an economical run first up and doesn't need to get too far back.

Serious 3yo.

That is great shopping Sunline. He's not over the line but I'd like to be holding one of your tix.

Stronger Navy to start Guineas voyage in McNeil Stakes

Trainer Ciaron Maher says punters will see a stronger Merchant Navy when he attempts to remain unbeaten in Saturday's Group III HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Merchant Navy won his three autumn runs in Victoria with his campaign culminating in a strong win in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in April.

Maher spelled the son of Fastnet Rock after that effort after the post-race signs indicated the colt needed a break and the Caulfield trainer said Merchant Navy has appreciated not being pushed too far in his maiden campaign.

"He was dominant in his last win but he tightened up out the back after the run so we sent him out," Maher said.

"It was fairly noticeable that he furnished a lot in his break."

has Merchant Navy as a $3 favourite in its 'all-in' McNeil Stakes market after pleasing jumpouts on August 4 and 22 and Maher expects the three-year-old to be around the mark fresh.

"Hopefully he can win that first-up," Maher said.

"He's prepped up well and he's developed since his two-year-old year and he's got a great record. And the race is in his backyard.

"He's got a great set of lungs so I wouldn't mind a bit of give in the track and if there was showers around for the rest of the week, then it would be fine."

Starspangledbanner was the last Caulfield Guineas winner to race in the McNeil Stakes when the colt completed the double in 2009 but Maher said that double was a goal with Merchant Navy.

"I reckon he's definitely a Caulfield Guineas type but I think the 1400m or mile will be perfect for him," Maher said.

Mark Zahra will ride Merchant Navy in the McNeil Stakes.

Merchant Navy is a $16 chance in the latest Caulfield Guineas market.

I agree with 3.

This is a good field of 3yo's and if Merchant Navy is being set for the Guineas he will not be wound right up, so I can not see him winning this weekend, but I think you have maximised your return Sunline.

He meets Bel Sonic 1.5 kilos worse for their meeting, he meets the Sydney form in Trekking, and we saw the 3yo winner at the valley last week come from the Rosebud, the fillies are smart and I HAVE A HUGE OPINION OF Poseidons Pool.

This is one of the races we will be dissecting for a few days to get the future winners from.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise

If you're backing Merchant Navy in the GR you want to be backing Muraahib going forward. Should have made it extremely close.

Looked one of the better chances today.
The odds were too good to ignore, though I did take unders.
Ended up 19s.

Unbeaten in Victoria.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left

Off to join Aiden O. Coolmoore have said, to be set for Royal Ascot race, trainer Ciaron Maher has been invited by O'Brien to his establishment for a chat over things lol, I hope he runs up to his potential as he really is imo top shelve and should have left a last start winner.

Would brain them at Ascot if left with CMaher so AO has to produce. SSB in the Diamond Jubilee was his last, an omen perhaps?  Don't recall him being associated with good sprinters. Caravaggio's bubble burst quickly, any others?

Based on what would he brain them at Ascot? Isn't Redkirk Warrior meant to be going as well? He couldn't even beat him with a 5.5kg advantage. Over there he would get 0 advantage. Redkirk Warrior was ridden upside down and gave him 5.5 and a beating. Absolutely having yourself on to say he would brain them overseas.

Was thinking OS sprinters. Don't know what race they have in mind for RW.

MN arguably should have won the Newmarket and the winner beat the best sprinter in the world in the Lightning before that. That's lengths better than OS sprinters' form.

Iirc he will not be advantaged by their weight scale. We give their young horses an allowance, can't recall ours getting the same treatment?  Just checked and Brazen Beau had to carry the same weight as older horses 58.5kg. Still should have won.

We beg to differ speediskey and there's nothing wrong with that, there will be a turn around in weights if they meet in the UK, until then I'll keep my thoughts to myself.

It would be a task obviously but even at level weights I'd be happy to back MN, depending on price, how they're going and where they draw (CWilliams!). He'll be 3 months older, had nothing to follow in the Newmarket, was out in no go land and was beaten a long neck. CSchofield was the only jockey at Flemington who wasn't aware of the fast lanes apparently.
