By Caro Meldrum-Hanna and Sam Clark

16th February 2015

Australians love their sport.

Australians also love a punt.

Right now, Australians love betting on greyhound racing, the sport based on pushing dogs to their limits.

With more than 40,000 races and more than 300,000 dogs running at tracks across the country each year, Australians are now wagering $4 billion a year on the sport. Prize-money has skyrocketed and greyhound racing is riding a wave of renewed popularity.

The message to punters is that the sport has cleaned-up and modernised; the welfare of animals is now at the forefront of the industry.

But things are not as they seem.

This week Four Corners reporter Caro Meldrum-Hanna leads a gritty investigation into the darkest secrets of the sport, exposing the gruesome underbelly of greyhound racing.

This investigation will rock the industry, and the sport, to its core.

Making a Killing reveals widespread cheating and illegality across the country, and throws into question the validity of thousands of greyhound races and millions of dollars.

How the cheating is actually done is so extreme it defies belief. What some trainers are prepared to do, to give their dogs the winning edge, will shock even the most hardened viewer.

As someone who has looked closely at the sport tells Meldrum-Hanna:

"Putting together animals, gambling and prize purses is a toxic mix. It's capable of turning men into monsters."

What a small team of investigators with limited resources has managed to uncover in Making a Killing should put the regulators of the industry to shame and change the sport forever.

MAKING A KILLING, reported by Caro Meldrum-Hanna and presented by Kerry O'Brien, goes to air on Monday 16th February at 8.30pm on ABC. It is replayed on Tuesday at 10.00am and again at midnight on Wednesday. It can also be seen on ABC News 24 at 8.00pm on Saturday, ABC iview or abc.net.au/4corners.

Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has immediately stood down five registered participants for alleged live baiting offences under the Greyhound Racing Rules and the NSW Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, according to a press release on Thursday evening.

John Cauchi, Tony Cauchi, Donna Grech, Zeke Kadir and Ian Morgan have all been stood down pending further investigations.

The registration of the Box Hill Trial Track has also been suspended, meaning no trialling can take place there until further notice.

The action taken by GRNSW follows property raids by the RSPCA NSW in the Londonderry area this week.

Advertisement< id="titan-adspot-300x250-pos3" name="titan-adspot-300x250-pos3" width="300" height="250" border="0" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" style="margin: auto; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; font-style: inherit; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: bottom; display: block; height: 250px; width: 300px;">

GRNSW Chief Steward Clint Bentley said the decision to stand down the participants was made due to the seriousness of the allegations against them.

"While the investigations are only beginning, the allegations are of such a serious nature that we felt it imperative to suspend the five participants immediately," Mr Bentley said.

GRNSW Chief Executive Brent Hogan said GRNSW had a zero tolerance for anyone found guilty of live baiting offences.

"We take all allegations of animal cruelty seriously and as a result I fully support the actions taken by GRNSW stewards today," Mr Hogan said.

"GRNSW is liaising with RSPCA NSW to find out more information on the raids and how we can further assist in this matter."

Further, licensed trainer John O'Brien has been stood down with immediate effect following a property inspection conducted by GRNSW today.

GRNSW stood down Mr O'Brien having located eight live European rabbits on his Congewai property.

A message from GRNSW to members -

On Monday night, Four Corners will air a program on the national greyhound industry.

From what GRNSW understands, the program will primarily deal with integrity and welfare, with a particular focus on the abhorrent and barbaric practice of live baiting.

There is likely to be additional allegations about widespread cheating including drug use and race-fixing. The euthanasia of healthy young dogs and the welfare of our greyhounds will also be examined. The angle is likely to be that there is now more money than ever in the sport of greyhound racing and people within it will do whatever it takes, no matter what the consequence for these poor animals, to get a slice of the financial benefits.

Last Wednesday, as many of you would know, there were simultaneous raids conducted by the RSPCA and police in three states and shocking allegations of live-baiting have surfaced as a result. GRNSW, nor any of the other state controlling bodies, were aware of the raids prior to them taking place. It is not a coincidence that Four Corners has been developing this story and these raids have taken place just days before the program is due to air.

It goes without saying that the practice of live-baiting is not welcome in this sport. Not only is it a breach of greyhound racing rules, it is a criminal offence punishable under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and can attract a jail term of up to two-years and a fine of up to $22,000.

Following the raids, GRNSW immediately stood down the five people targeted by the RSPCA as well as another participant who was the subject of a GRNSW led inspection. This reflects the zero tolerance GRNSW and the majority of those in the industry have against people who engage in acts such as live baiting.

It is extremely disappointing that there are still people in this sport that partake in this practice or are complicit in its continuation. GRNSW has been very clear that community standards regarding the treatment of animals have changed significantly over the years and it is disappointing that some in this sport have not moved with the times.

Given the events of the last few days, mainstream media have already run stories on the greyhound racing industry. These will continue to increase in the coming days and possibly weeks, depending on the magnitude of the allegations.

Make no mistake. This story will be explosive, emotive and extremely damaging to the future of this sport in Australia.

In response, GRNSW will be making an announcement in the coming days about the establishment of an independent taskforce which will investigate training methods used by trainers in NSW, arrangements for the control, supervision and registration of trial tracks, breaking-in centres and training facilities, whether GRNSW and relevant agencies have the necessary powers to properly investigate allegations of animal cruelty and the resourcing at GRNSW to ensure it is appropriate to fulfil functions with respect to integrity and welfare.

We will also highlight the good work the industry does and the tremendous progress we have made in the areas of animal welfare, integrity and re-homing.

As a group of people that purport to love the greyhound breed we should all be shocked and outraged by the allegations in the story and prepared to fight the small minority that continue to partake in such practices jeopardising the future of the sport and indeed the future of the breed itself.

You may be emotional, you will be angry. Do not be angry at those that attack us, regardless of their position. Be angry at those within the sport that are doing the wrong thing and providing the ammunition to attack all of us.

If you have any information regarding animal cruelty within the NSW greyhound racing industry, you should contact GRNSW immediately on (02) 8767 0500 and ask to talk to the GRNSW Welfare and Compliance Unit.

This time is a testing one for all in the industry and we need to stay resolute in our desire to conduct ourselves in a manner that is compliant with social standards and expectations. The future of the sport and the wonderful greyhound breed necessitates it.

Yours faithfully
THE DOGS

Brent Hogan
Chief Executive

The Jumps racing issue is not about integrity is it ?

This is 100% about the integrity of Greyhound racing.

it was a REAL look at it...

even so-called "respectable" owners, who wouldn't harm a fly themselves, are party to this...

my brother confessed to having his dogs "blooded" twenty years ago...he said it was common practice with his then trainer...yet he is a really gentle bloke who "supposedly" loves animals...when we, as a family, forcibly expressed disgust at the practice, he took his puppies away and trained them himself...with much success...

but he doesn't have the time to train anymore and uses someone else now... we don't discuss what goes on...but if his trainer is involved, then I hope he goes under as well...

there is so much corruption in the sport, I believe it should be banned...

I do not want to have a go at you or your brother Jujuno but this is a massive issue with the sport I believe ; The people who turn a blind eye to what they seem to know is going on.

Hopefully courageous people can start coming forward and pointing out those who they know or suspect are doing the wrong thing.

I am against this cruelty, naturally.

But, it is easy from a distance.

I can see how it happens and people become hardened to it.

And it is very hard to knock back the money , they believe these methods work whether fact or not.

Greed is a strong motivator and perhaps some of these uneducated types do not have many options.

Not excusing them but walk a mile in their shoes

I am not against killing as such. I do not believe being dead is cruel. Its sad but it is not cruel.

Torture and cruelty I am totally against.

I want to play the devils advocate here -

Surely blooding a dog, if it is of any good to a dog or not could be done with the rabbit, possum or piglet already dead with blood dripping so the dog can smell it, or do these scumbags think the dogs will only chase if the prey is kicking and screaming ?

Blood has nothing to do with it djebel, a dog is a prey animal so catching & killing is inbuilt in them. How many times do we see docos of wolves hunting & we are told they actually kill on one out of five occasions but there's a difference, they need to for survival.
Decently bred, reared & trained greyhounds do not need kills to be competitive Stern Smile

why would you have a go at me?...I have nothing whatsoever to do with greyhound racing...I deplore it...my brother and I don't discuss it anymore as it would cause a bigger rift in our relationship than already exists...we have had numerous arguments over the subject...

I can't "dob him in" because he, himself, has not done anything...just known what is happening...he rationalises that since it has happened since greyhound racing started, it is impossible to stop...

I rationalise that if that is your way of thinking, you have no integrity and should not call yourself an animal lover...so we are at loggerheads...

I want the sport closed down...it is barbaric, corrupt and full of shonky characters...ones who make horse nobblers look mild...and I find it hard to rationalise that my brother, who is nothing like those shown on the program last night, endorses it...
