& what about peeling a banana or taking a hamburger out of a wrapper ?

So it is easier to peel a banana while driving than hanging onto a mobile phone ? - & as Redemption said - sit outside a Maccas Drive Through & watch how many start to scoff their food before going 20m

I have given my opinion, I rarely use a mobile but even I am tempted to answer calls while driving, I have many times. If I was fined so be it , my fault

Correct Whale. In fact blokes like you who never get calls are more likely to overreact in a panic to see who it is. Wrong number most likely - but the damage is already done.

People these days pay more attention to their phones and not the road and surroundings

Just seeing the latest road statistics I thought this thread needed to be revisited

It would seem accidents, driving's caught drinking / with drugs, & those using a mobile are worse than 12 months ago.

How could that be ?

Maybe its time to quadruple the fines again - maybe lynch a few - just to make the point.

Imagine how bad the numbers would be if we pulled over drivers peel & eating a banana ?

I think we need a few national road summits to get on top of the problem. Greenfield approach !

Seriously - if you watch these Cop shows like Highway Patrol & Motorbike Cops it really shows just how over the top it is. And the coppers talk about their sneaky ways to catch someone. The latest is P plate drivers are not supposed to have a phone within arms length - can be sitting on the passengers seat & they can book you. Go up down cars stopped at  lights peaking in the passenger window looking for anyone touching a phone. Yet i can fiddle with the digital display for the radio, air-con, hot seat warming, air vents & so on & that's OK - & eat a banana & peel an orange.

And it doesn't seem to help anyway according to the latest stats.

Needs an overhaul - its a money making lurk !

You don't phone, engage in conversation with, text or scroll a banana. At least I don't.

I saw a highway patrol boss today, asking/begging people.  If you need to adjust any controls, check your kid , eat, or any other thing, please pull over and take 5 mins to do that.  That 5 mins could save your kife and others as well.
That horrific crash just out of Lithgow a few days ago should be an eye opener to us all.
One of the men who died was a hard wroking father of 9 kids.

your LIFE,,, Embarrassed
Not forgetting that train crash on the SA NSW border where 2 train drivers were killed when the train hit a truck at a level crossing .
Did anyone see the pics ?  Long straight roads with no obstructions, how could the truckie not see that train ?  Now he walks away with hardly a scratch and the 2 drivers are dead.
Trying to beat the train to the crossing so he didnt have to wait, I bet.

I think most people would be doing all that based on my experience with my wizz bang apple car play performance - which apparently isn't that unusual across all cars. And are you telling me having a conversation on the phone is dangerous. If so - better ban all speaking.

I get the texting bit - that is dangerous. However the rest of the claims are over the top & quite frankly smell of  revenue raising. What's the difference typing an address into your google apps on the phone or on your car digital screen ?

The bloody coppers themselves are forever playing with their gauges - but that's obviously ok Confused

The danger of course is the coppers targeting phone "touching" when bigger risks are staring them in the face

Do they ever release the full stats in incidents? As in suburb, speed, etc? When they talk of such things it reeks of dishonesty, manipulations and generalisations

I can’t recall the last accident on the pacific highway in Chatswood that killed 5 people and , techn, everyone is speeding

While having both hands on the steering wheel is of course important for safe driving, this doesn’t remove the dangers associated with talking on the phone, as it is the act of speaking on the phone that is dangerous. The risk of crashing is as high when using a hands-free mobile as when using a hand-held one6 , and merely talking on a mobile phone can slow reaction times of a twenty year old to that of a seventy year old7 .

Those copper shows don't do any favor's. Not sure why the powers to be think they do & give approval for them to be produced for TV

Often come across as real cowboys  - esp. those blokes on the motor bikes. They talk to each other & are taking cheap shots all the time - & its like a contest who can give the most infringements. What happened to the good old days when warnings were regularly given ? Rare as hens teeth these days. Still do a lot of it in NZ based on the NZ version Police 10

The Highway Patrol coppers have bugger all status / respect from the other policing departments. Easy to see why . I feel sorry for the ones that do take a good approach to their roles.

& here's the problem. As soon as you ask questions the standard response is "it saves lives". Pretty hard to argue that it doesn't save some - so that gives rise to the penalty just going up & up . I mean what a great solution for the Government of the day - save lives at the same time as making more money LOL

Not unlike medical specialists - they are also saving lives. Which means they get away with charging whatever they like

So in my next life I'm going to get a job that saves lives
