I know its England but cant help feeling that, if transposed to Australia, where are the politicians,  Labor and  Liberal, all levels of government, the unions, the community leaders. You know the response would be shock, horror, run around like headless chooks, promise this and that, and nothing meaningful is done. However, those who could change it will be well paid, wine and dine with each other. It seems the only news coming out of England nowadays is brexit and the royals. Self centred people.

ALSTON, England — It was not until Trevor Robinson received a letter notifying him of a missed appointment at the hospital that he realized he had not spoken to another human being in more than six weeks.

Mr. Robinson, a 77-year-old retired landscape gardener, had spent most of that time alone, sitting on his favorite frayed leather recliner looking out the window at the moorland surrounding his cottage in the northwestern county of Cumbria.

“When you spend every second by yourself, you lose track of time,” he said as tears trickled down his face. “I feel lonely, very lonely, and bored.”

Mr. Robinson’s isolation, shared by thousands of older people in Britain, is the result of a chain of cause-and-effect that stretches from rural Cumbria to the halls of power in London. He used to ride a subsidized bus to town until the local council discontinued the route. The council was responding to steep budget cutbacks stemming from the Conservative-led government’s decade-long austerity program.

under austerity, older people are feeling new constraints.

Not just older people.  My friend in Dubbo has some kind of tumour and has to travel to Sydney, by herself, to see a specialist as there are none service Dubbo area for her particular thing.

It is happening all around Australia and not just in rural areas People are dying alone in their own homes isolated and ignored in suburbs of every city in Australia. a major social problem. there are mostly services available but in many cases older people dont know how to access them or even that they exist. If you dont have a family or social network you simply fall between the cracks and you are only discovered by smells coming from the home.

That is what police and ambulance say is often first evidence of lonely people dying at home.

I know they always ask neighbours to keep a watch and pop in sometimes , for elderly neighbours, which is good.  But sometimes, it gets a bit much for others to handle.  The elderly start to rely too much on others that dont have a lot of time, or cant take on responsibility for others when they have their own worries.
Our neighbour is just going thru health dramas and we have been doing as much for him as we can, as his son is in Singapore and daughter in London.  He gets all the neighbourcare things that are available, but  he is starting to depend on us too much, and we cant be here all the time for him.  We go away a lot , and out at night, but he wants to make us first responders for his Vitacall thingo.  And now he is loosing the plot  a bit he gets stroppy when we try to explain certain things , like why he cant drive at the moment, and why we wont be fiirst responders. Thankfully his daughter is coming on Sunday to get him sorted.
But after all the dramas we have been having the last couple of months , its easy to understand why others shy away from lonely old people. Of course not all are like this, but a lot are .  And one becomes loath to keep taking on more responsibilities for someone who you really have no control over.
I suppose I will be like that one day Cry

My brother is in Real Estate and he was telling me about this old guy who didn’t pay his rent for a couple of months. They couldn’t reach him on the phone or mail, so used the spare key to go inside. He was dead in his bed and had been there for weeks.

They ended up gutting the house because they couldn’t get rid of the smell.

It was rather sad that he laid there in the suburbs, Neighbours all around, busy road for months, and nobody noticed a thing.

Is a point isnt it; BEING ONLINE is one way of staying in touch

but you need to be able to USE a computer, let alone have one, and have the connection as well.

those in the caring sector need to be more proactive, than reactive.

and leaving it to first responders, police ambulance, real estate

is not good enough, especially today.
