Not all he says is defensible, but Jordan Peterson deserves to be taken seriously

Marxists lost a long time ago. Relax, capitalism won. But all those pesky gays, women and minorities have purchasing power too. Therefore capitalism wants to play nice with them. Just like it does with gay mardi gras, raunch culture, reality TV, gangsta rap, internet porn...

Now what would Marx have made of those? Money doesn't have ideologies, only owners and spenders.

Absolutely. But both things can be true, rather than having to take one polar view. Try telling the people at marxist.org etc that they have lost. Have a quick browse through the topics of their upcoming events. Pretending that these people don't work hard to make changes, through education, media and politics, is just head in the sand stuff.

Getting back to Peterson, the main things he makes a stand against are: radical lefty academics indoctrinating students who are too young to understand the world yet, categorizing people into groups, and govts imposing linguistic forms on citizens. He's not tilting at windmills. Ooen your eyes.

And all that nazi etc stuff has nothing to do with the thread topic. Peterson often cites nazis and right wing extremists of all kinds as identity politics troublemakers.

Or Neo-Nazis? The influence of either tends to be greatly exagerrated.

And my eyes are open. Anyone involved in Universities in the last few decades will tell you that the biggest change has been increased commercialisation. Students are increasingly in vocational related courses, are paying more, receiving less and competing with increased quotas, particularly from high fee paying overseas students. All most of them are worried about is getting a job so they can start paying down their debt. And getting laid as much as possible along the way.

Furthermore, large universities are increasingly looking to industry partnerships to commercialise research, and BY FAR the most influential people in the faculties are those who can attract the most funding. And I'll give you the tip, these people aren't doing gender or political studies.

Yes, you are indeed tilting at windmills.

It's specifically the humanities depts who are full of rad lefties. It's a back slapping industry teaching quack subjects that turn out to be a waste of time and money for the kids.

And the humanities have lost relevance in tertiary education largely because of triumphant market principles. Students want to study something that's going to get them a gig that'll help them pay a mortgage. Arts isn't it. But check out the enrolments for law and commerce.

(I'm joking there. It would be better if the humanities course were teaching real stuff and encouraging real thinkers who could make a difference to the materialistic world, but the mickey mouse subjects and methods are useless stuffing that rots the moment it comes into contact with the real world. Unless of course you choose a career of professional activist.)

What happens when Dante meets the real world? I love literature and I love those "dead white guys". I'd love to see serious literature and art have it's deserved place in society, but we've got what we've got. The Kardashians and I'm a Celebrity.... Marx would be turning in his grave, as would Edmund Burke.

Judgemental - when you try intelligent discussion your bandwagon doesn't even have wheels in the first place. Nothing to fall off your empty vessel. "Simply" wasn't a typo it was a mental error. Zero for the cover up effort.

Life would be so much more pleasant for you if you ever come to the realisation that the intellectual zenith you aspire to is a long way beyond your true capacity.

Yeah that’s right moron, I don’t know the difference between simply and simplify. Keep clinging to that if it makes you feel better. As for “intellectual zenith I aspire to”...😂. Seriously, where do you get this stuff? Oh that’s right, “Psychobabble for Dummies”. Time to upgrade your reading list, methinks.

The trash just fills the vaccuum though. If there's less of a vaccuum there'd be less trash. You can't tell me that more dante and less derrida in unis would result in more stable and substantial thinkers. Which is what humanities is supposed to produce isn't it? And they're meant to contribute in their own way to society. The shame is that adolescents and young people are often hungry for meaningful stuff, and the are being fed cynicism and passing fads by academics who just promote each others' books. On a side note, I'm always stunned by the number of university educated people under 60ish on quiz shows who don't even know that Mark Twain wrote books or that Bismarck was German. But they can name the Kardashians and characters from Harry Potter.

Any way, if you can spare the time, try listening to that interview of Russell Brand and Peterson. Actually really good stuff! A respectful discussion where they both actually listen and respond to one another, mentioning some pretty good books along the way.

Sorry hust one practical example - I did a teaching round once at a high school where the philosophy teacher was actually an educated jewish guy who was teaching the kids about syllogisms. In one lesson, a smarty pants depressed adolescent kid said that syllogisms were silly because there is no such thing as objective truth - everyone makes their own truth etc. The teacher then wrote the kid's argument in the form of a syllogism, and several hands shot up straight away - they saw that the premise was self-contradictory so what followed was pointless. Imagine if keyboard warriors around the world these days had been taught that basic kind of stuff instead of wishy washy relativism and identity politics.

Maybe forget the relativism Stayer, it's identity politics that's the real and appalling killer in "Democratic States" these days.  Dead

I'd rather read your posts than all the gelati taught in unis these days. You actually know what you're talking about and have experience to back it up.
