Jason Maskiell’s dream of riding in the US is in the hands of the US immigration authorities.
Maskiell has submitted an application to enter the United States during the week and will need to wait a couple of weeks to find out whether he’ll be granted a visa

Miracle of miracles - I found a decent piece of writing from Matt Stewart.

Here's a pertinent extract:
But racing can also be judgmental and simplistic in its regard for those who stumble the way Maskiell has stumbled.

The other text below is from a different website, might be of interest. Good luck to him, hope he can continue to ward off the temptations and bad influences.

Tasmanian jockey Jason Maskiell has won his first listed race since beating an ice addiction that saw him banned for 18-months and out of the saddle for even longer.

The win came aboard Tasmanian galloper Hellova Street in the Magic Millions Thomas Lyons (1400m) at Hobart on Sunday.

Maskiell’s story has been well publicised having failed two drug tests, the first being in 2011 when Maskiell was suspended for 6 months after testing positive to ice at a meeting at Echuca in August.

In 2013 Maskiell tested positive again when riding at Kyneton on Melbourne Cup day and was slapped with an 18-month ban.

The 18-month ban ruled Maskiell out of race riding until May 2015, however his road back took much longer with the former gun apprentice only making his comeback to riding in August last year.

Maskiell was highly rated as a young jockey having won the 2009 apprentice jockeys’ premiership and finishing equal-second in the senior premiership whilst riding for many of Melbourne’s premier stables.

Maskiell completed a double on the day, taking out the last aboard Christopher Mac. Meanwhile, Hellova Street will now target the Mowbray Stakes on Launceston Cup day.

So proud of @JasonMaskiell – wins a Listed race aboard the mighty Hellova Street. He’s somehow found a way back from rock bottom – a rarity when addicted to the demon drug ice. I hoped for this, but never expected it, when you bravely opened up to me in May ‘16.

He has purposely based himself outside the city for that very reason.

First of all let me say I am not making a judgement on Jason and I wish him and anyone addicted to that social demon, which I class as harmful as terrorism, and anyone who manufactures, distributes and sells it as terrorists, all the best.

But I take exception to that headline in the article.

If I am an owner, and trainer, I am not being judgemental if, when Jason resumed riding I did not give him or any rider, rides, after such a fall from grace.

The way you get rides, is by building the trust with the trainers and owners over at least a few months, at trackwork and trials and jumpouts.

That seems to be what Jason has done, so as I said we wish him all the best, but, that does not mean that because he did not get rides that he was being pre-judged.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise

Franki Dettorie still got a US Visa after his cocaine binges, suspension etc.

But a criminal record is different and Frankie and Jason has not got one.

People change when they grow up.

Jason Maskiell has been riding very well and has been for an extended period.

Hope he goes well with the application.

Maskiell scans reveal back fractures

Jockey Jason Maskiell is set for another extended period out of the saddle following an incident in the mounting yard at Kyneton on Thursday.

The 32-year-old was dislodged from Champinsky ahead of race seven at Kyneton and shortly after was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for observation.

Scans have since revealed Maskiell suffered fractures to his T9 and T10 vertebrae.

It continues a shocking run of luck for Maskiell, who was involved in a number of falls last year and has battled concussion symptoms, spending time out of the saddle because of it.

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!
