PROMINENT Melbourne jockey Jason Maskiell's career is in limbo after
the 22-year-old was suspended yesterday by Racing Victoria Stewards for
six months after testing positive to crystal methamphetamine, known as
''ice''.

That was an internal club matter, there's no criminal conviction. He can sue.

Truth is only a complete defence in the US. In Aus, if you can prove that it wasn't in the public's best interests to hear/read it and the publication damaged your rep, you can claim defamation even if it was true.

possibly answers my question........
FORMER star Tasmanian apprentice Jason Maskiell took another step towards returning to race riding after competing in trials at Tapeta Park Spreyton yesterday. Maskiell partnered two horses from the Barry Campbell stable that were placed in their respective trials. Maskiell has been working for Spreyton trainer Vicki Rhind while he prepares to make a comeback after 10 months on the sidelines. He was Tasmania’s leading apprentice when he relocated to Victoria and it took him no time to get established. In his first season (2009-10) in Victoria he not only won the apprentices premiership but he finished second to Luke Nolan on the senior jockeys’ premiership table with 52 winners. Maskiell made regular visits to Tasmania during that time and he was a much sought after commodity during the Tasmanian Sumer Racing Carnival. But somehow he lost his way and that led to a bust-up with his Caulfield-based master Mick Price and after being taken on by another Caulfield-based trainer Robert Smerdon Maskiell again fell foul of the rules while in his care and not once but twice. He then took two months off but when he returned to race riding he failed a routine drug test at Echuca, near the NSW border, and that led to a six-month suspension. Stewards imposed certain conditions that needed to be met before he was relicensed but that criterion has been met. The talented young rider is genuinely trying to resurrect his career back home in Tasmania and he has received a lot of support from trainers who know his worth as both a person and as a jockey. His plan is to ride in more trials next week to gain more fitness and possibly resume race riding next month. Back to results |

25/06/2012 Maskiell to return at Launceston on SundayFormer star apprentice Jason Maskiell will return to the saddle after more than 10 months off the scene at Sunday’s Launceston meeting. The young talent has three rides in his home state at his first meeting since failing a drug test at Echuca last year, which earned him a six-month suspension. The offence was the last in a run of indiscretions that cost the jockey opportunities with the Mick Price and Robert Smerdon camps. Maskiell showed his undeniable ability when his finished second to Luke Nolen in the 2009/10 Melbourne jockeys’ premiership. Maskiell has based himself with the Vicki Rhind stable at Spreyton as he prepares for his comeback. |

Maskiell still has the magic 01 / 07 / 2012STAR Tasmania jockey Jason Maskiell celebrated his return to race riding from a suspension-enforced lay-off with a brilliant win aboard first-starter Apache Son in Launceston today. Maskiell was back riding after a 10-month break and he had to work overtime to ensure victory aboard the well-bred four-year-old. Apache Son (Golden Snake-Nkwazi) missed the start by four lengths and was still a clear last at the home turn but under strong riding from Maskiell the flashy chestnut gelding worked his way through the field and collared the leader about 100 metres from home and went ion to score well. Maskiell was elated as he crossed the line signaling a single-digit finger to the crowd but aimed more at the trainer Vicki Rhind who has played an integral role in Maskiell’s rehabilitation process this past month. Maskiell copped a six-month ban after being tested positive to methamphetamine at Echuca, Victoria, in August last year. Maskiell took it upon himself to make dramatic changes to his lifestyle and be more particular about with whom he mixed socialized and as a result of that conviction he has emerged a stronger and wiser 21-year-old. Listen to what jockey Jason Maskiell had to say about his first win back in the saddle and how his life has changed for the better – click on he audio file below. |

Layer yes it was a stupid thing to do but we all make mistakes as young blokes. reckon if you asked him he wouldve always wished he had never touched it. lots of pressure out there these days and while it doesnt make it right to do it sometimes we make mistakes.............i just wish him the best in his life and hope as he has made some tough decisions of late that it pays off for him

I think his decision to relocate to Tasmania indicates a genuine desire to self-rehabilitate and whilst he could be called stupid for touching Ice in the first place, it is a credit to him that he has returned with what looks like a steely resolve to put those mistakes well behind him.
Good Luck to the young man. |

Lets hope they don't take drugs then or you will want your money back . You clearly have no idea how quickly addiction can take hold otherwise you would show compassion . A very misguided young man for sure but doesn't deserve being written off at 21 .
