Another excellent win. What an iron horse three year old.
He's made me a packet this summer and I hope he improves enough to be competitive in the eastern seaboard carnivals. Tough horse.

Beat Kincaple by a long head after it had the perfect run.
I backed it off the map and thought it would run away by 5 lengths. Great it won but is too much of a plodder to make it over in the East. |

Don't forget he's three and has had a couple of big runs against hardened older gallopers. He may be nothing special but I wouldn't mind owning him.

No doubt will win a lot of Perth races of good money. I backed him as I thought he was unbeatable. My balance looks surprisingly high even if I look through glassy drunken eyes. I take it back. He is already a champion to me.

Maybe 2000m is his max. Turn of foot put him outside Kincaple in a blink but only wacked away to win.

He's good by WA standards, but no Northerly. Luckygray would have tested him yesterday if he'd run the trip. Kincaple's no star.

Will be interesting to see how its career goes.
Northerly didn't have as good a 3 year old form when it came over. Or even Old Comrade who won an Australian Cup. I tend to think that 2,000 is a little long for it. Is more of a miler to 1,800 m where it can use its natural speed. |

I think you might be underestimating him. Fred Kersley had said he'd shown signs of training off in the lead up and he appeared to be quite unsettled before the race yesterday.

Old Comrade was good horse, four Group 1s including the Australian Cup as you say, beat Northerly that day - it was a WA quinella. Was a bit of a shock I think from memory when Old Comrade won. |

Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

Who did he beat? Kincaple and a few average WA plodders exposed over in the East. Good money to be made in WA racing so stay there and earn it.

I agree, he didn't beat much and it will be a different story in terms of the opposition if he heads east. I assume he will head east? Good luck to the horse, trainer and owner(s). Time will tell if he does well in the east and time will also tell if he is one of these WA horses that everyone raves on about because he has done well in Perth but then struggles in the east........and we have all seen those type of WA horses time and time again. Is he as good as a Northerly?? Probably not. What another good middle distance horse called Old Comrade - is he as good as him??? Not sure. Another middle distance horse that comes to mind is Scenic Shot - is he as good as him?? Again not sure. As I said time will tell.. Cheers, Jamal. |

I understand the sceptics as he is racing in WA, so it's fair enough.
But the one thing I suggest is different is this bloke is only 3 and beating up older horses at WFA. That's hard to do anywhere and when it's done at Group 1 level it's invariably worth noting.
I remember Plastered was beating up on older horses in WA as a 3yo and it made me take notice. I then backed him in Melbourne in the Derby and he proved he was every bit as good as I thought as he beat two 3YOs who either had already or were about to beat the older horses at WFA: Savabeel - Cox Plate winner 7 days earlier - and Count Ricardo - Group 1 Sandown Classic winner later in the carnival.
That's probably what excites me more than anything else about the horse. If he keeps improving he can make the transition. If he doesn't, no doubt he'll struggle.

Noticed this former G1 winner is now trained out of Broome, where he recently tasted victory for the first time since 2016 in a 1400m Hcp carrying 66kg.
Also holds entries for the Metric Mile & Darwin Cup at Fannie Bay this Saturday & next Monday. |

Well done Itsahymn.
Was a terrific 3yo in Perth in 2013/14, then spent several years in the wilderness and now wins a big race again with today’s 2019 Darwin Cup. He’d have to be the only Darwin Cup winner in history to also have G1 win on his resume too. |

The remarkable story of the grey Ihtsahymn just got a whole lot better after the nine-year-old grey won Monday’s Darwin Cup (2000m).
Six seasons ago, Ihtsahymn won the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Perth's Ascot racecourse and on Monday evening the became the first West Australian horse to win the Darwin Cup. Ihtsahymn is not only from WA but is trained in Broome by rookie Rob Gulberti after being trained in his younger days by Northerly’s trainer Fred Kersley, who was on-course to cheer on the topweight, whom he still part-owns with wife Judith. After enjoying the run of the race for veteran rider Peter Hall, Ihtsahymn proved too strong on the line over Lotion with Xebec in third just ahead of the favourite Lieder. The win in the $200,000 race took Ihtsahymn’s earnings from 59 runs to more than $1.5m. He won the Kingston Town Stakes in 2013 as a three-year-old after winning the G2 WA Guineas. It is believed Ihtsahymn is the first Group 1 winner to race in Darwin |

Ihtsahymn goes back-to-back in Darwin CupIhtsahymn moved veteran jockey Peter Hall to tears after the grand campaigner refused to wilt under the top weight to win his second successive Darwin Cup (2050m). Ihtsahymn won the Kingston Town Classic as a three-year-old but the wear and tear of years of racing meant the 10-year-old had to overcome feet issues to post back-to-back Darwin Cup triumphs. Hall said he and Broome trainer Rob Gulberti had to leave home in Western Australia to quarantine in Katherine for a fortnight before they could even think of getting the horse right for the Darwin Cup. However, Hall told Sky Racing that Gulberti did an amazing job to get Ihtsahymn to the track on Monday. “He came here last year and won but most horses are fragile on this type of racing because it’s so hard,” Hall said. “For some reason, the harder it is, the better he goes for whatever reason. “He’s had foot issues and Gully has done an amazing job.” Hall said Ihtsahymn didn’t feel 100 percent underneath him but the horse's will to win got him home over by a long neck over the fast-finishing Paghman. The jockey knew Ihtsahymn was labouring under his 61.5kg when chasing Ash Grey around the turn but he refused to concede defeat, lifting in the last 100m. “He’s an amazing horse. He just changed stride about 10 times but he’s got the will to win,” Hall said. “He’s had foot issues and I could feel it going to the barriers I could feel him going into the gates and I could feel him in the run. “He was hurting chasing that grey horse (Ash Grey) and he’s just better than all of us. “Why does he not lay down like the rest of them? Why doesn’t he?” |
