Lot 306, just watch this Super One colt pass in @ $115k with reserve of $120k. What bad luck for those under bidders. No wonder buyers are sick of sales when they are treated like this. A quarter passed in

Should’ve just sold it for $115 and be done with it
Reserves are joke
It should be sold at market value,
Not over inflated egotistical breeders price

Vancouver badly in need of some friends.  The majority thus far sold at a loss thus far if vendors paid the advertised stud fee.

$340k or something similar for Lot 471 by the average Starcraft from a female family with no black type until the third generation.  Shocked

Off to Honkers with George Moore, backed by many with plenty.  Realistically a $100k yearling tops in my humble, but BOL to the purchasers.

Agree. There are a couple of high profile first season sires in some trouble too, namely Flying Artie and Astern.

I think the reserves reflect laziness on the part of the vendors, in many cases. The auction house just adds $5k to the last bid for the sake of giving/printing a reserve. The vendors should tell the the auction house what the reserve is, preferably before the auction of the horse starts or at least as it leaves the sales ring.
In most cases what we see as a reserve is meaningless as it will come down to a haggle in the end. Today there was a filly I liked that passed with a reserve of $50K but soon after it was reported as sold for $40k

Those who paid the $38,500 first season fee for Flying Artie have sure brought the rain. They are taking a bath.

Average $45k. Median $40k.

In take-home pay terms that means a whopping negative.. Simple maths Profit = sale price (- sale fees + rearing & prep costs + service fee).. ie $45k - ($5k + $30k + $38.5k) = -$28.5k = a BATH.

It'll be very interesting to see the composition and fee schedule of the Newgate roster for the upcoming season. Surely Sizzling is gone, Flying Artie gets a price cut, Dissident? Do they persevere when the market clearly thinks he's gone. Super One is another that will need to start kicking goals, but he was a dodgy proposition from the get-go.

I should also add that Wanjina could be in some trouble too.

And Extreme Choice with a 46% fertility rate in his first year of 118 mares is questionable. It improved to 81% when the book was cut (one way or another) to 68 in his second year.

He might be the hope of the side. Yearlings look like early comers and he was a very good young un. He might emulate his sire after a modest start..
