Yep plenty of proven stallions in that range, but he's not on his lonesome.

However he's first season he'll have hype being a half to snitzel so buyers will probably go for his stock.

Wonder what type if stallion you'd get in the us for that price ATM.

yarraman bred the horse and will support him with some very good mares i assume, so i wouldnt be surprised to see him with some easter yearlings and selling well.

Overpriced IMO he should of been somewhere around the $8K. He is the same price as Magic Albert who has sired 3 Gr 1 winners....

To put this horse in perspective he won two races as a 2yo. In the Canonbury he defeated Corvidae, Run For Wilson and Manahara, in the Skyline he beat Brightexpectations and Pressday.
He was not capable of winning any race, not even a metro or listed race as a 3yo and then broke down.
Those mentioning his "champion" 1/2 brother Snitzel fail to mention that from two full crops Snitzel has yet to produce a Group 1 winner. In boom times this horse would be excy at $12,000. At $16,000 he is one of the most inappropriately priced stallions in the country. This is sheer Hunter Valley arrogance

As far as 1st season sire sons of Fastnet Rock go, I'd prefer Rothesay to Hinchinbrook if they were the same price.

With Hinchinbrook standing a more than 35% higher fee than Rothesay, it's a no brainer.

Agree with bjf. I expected him to be in the $8-$10k range. Price set seems extremely high compared to proven and/or better performed stallions.

According to John Holloway's column in today's SMH, the shares in Hinchinbrook were $65,000 and were snapped up like hotcakes.
Two serves in the first 3 years and one annually thereafter.

What that says to me is that the breeders have at least a couple of decent mares and at $10k a pop they may have a good chance of getting something back before the progeny hit the track.  They most probably are breeders who can no longer justify paying overs for service fees and feel that this is more cost effective.

Providing their mare is good enough and he stamps his progeny then they may be able to make a dollar or two.

As for the horse, I followed his career from the beginning and thought he could make a top class galloper but he never showed any flashes of brilliance and was a bit of a disappointment.  Nice type but don't see him as "upgrade" material.

Bloody steep price per share.

If you work on the the horse being OK for the first three years, and thereafter, a possible dud, you are getting five services for $65,000 ( + GST?) putting the services at $13,000 each (+GST?).

Probably safer to ask for a discount and not buy the share.

I agree ilala but I can see how some people's thought processes may work in this instance.  They are probably going broke paying $30-$50k for a poke and getting $30-$50k for their yearlings so the $13k looks a bargain by comparison.  If they realise $30-$50k for these yearlings then at least they have a bit of a return.  Until the market returns to "normal" or whatever they think is going to happen.......Pinch

Honestly though with such variety in stallions out there in the market who is going to race to buy a Hinchinbrook? As was mentioned recently to me All American is priced similarly and at least won a Gr1.

Now having passed 1000 posts I feel you are all so much the wiser for my having said... stuff!

Slight correction to the arithmetic.

6 serves for $65,000 in the first 3 years, so around $11,000 each.

Still, the point is a valid one.

Would he be one of those type of stallions that you were better off going into a foal-share arrangement with the stud?  Especially considering his price, etc.

I'm not sure how you are getting that Mouse?

I don't think there is much joy out there for breeders, but I don't think that is the fault of the studs.

The stallions worth going to are in the Hunter. The market is shot at present. It will recover in time.

I don't think I am alone in feeling that overall service fees are too high. But as breeders we've let that happen.

The breeding industry has to change its outlook now that the avenue for profit from selling yearlings and mares is seriously restricted.

which probably poses the question of" How much value do people put on G1 placings" ie is it better to win 4 GP3's or win 1 GP3 and place in GP1 races.

Of course there are Group 1's and there are Group 1's.  A close 2nd at WFA behind Black Caviar or Whobegotyou would far outweigh something like a 3yo G3 at Morphetville.

Sometimes you need to look beyond the actual results and judge the ability.

Hinchinbrook looked absolutely fantastic at the Yarraman Park stallion parade. At $16,500 he's priced pretty realistically and will have a first class book of mares. Compare him to Star Witness at twice the price!
Personally, I prefer Hinchinbrook's stablemate I Am Invincible, who was the standout stallion of the weekend for me, but I wouldn't question anyone who's made the decision to use Hinchinbrook. He'll do well.
And the Mitchells have made the very strong point this year that not only do they believe they have priced their stallions attractively (Magic Albert & Trotamondo being the other two) but they are keeping 90% of their mares at home this year to support these four.

Agree he is too high, but it shows how tough racing can be and how important trouble free campaigns are. The desperation to get him to the Golden Rose gave him no favours. With some luck here and there he probably would have been a Group 1 winner. Wasn't far away in the Slipper and ran some good placings at G1 level.

9-12 K would have been a good starting point. Obviously priced on what he could have done which probably doesn't wash with most breeders.

It's just typical of the risk free stallion standing approach

Get your money back in the first 3 years and then who gives a gelati if he produces the goods.

Yarraman Park have closed the book for Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), with the Group Three winner capped at 120 mares. Hinchinbrook covered 119 mares last season, with his first foals due on the ground in the coming months. Another Yarraman Park-based stallion, Magic Albert (Zeditave), is also close to having a full book for the 2012 covering season.

Just read that article.  Its no real surprise given the boom on his sire and 3/4 brother (Snitzel).  People would look at him as a lower cost alternative.

Don't think he was up to either of these on ability though.  By stallion standards his racetrack performances are just passable.  Obviously he's getting every opportunity to be a success at stud.  Only time will tell now.
