I don't do numerical ratings. I know some people who do but for the effort involved I'd suggest they'd be more useful in Hong Kong or most parts of Australia.  In NZ we have wild variability in track conditions, track bias, times, courses, even distances can seem a bit off.  It can be much harder to compare even from earlier races on the same course to races run later than day.  The NZ Formpro site does those sort of things anyway so rather than spend plenty of time trying to untangle that mess if I was keen on it I'd just subscribe there.

The standout thing about Gingernuts was the 600m sectional on the wet track in the Guineas.  Its very rare you'll see a horse running almost a full second faster than anything else in what was considered quite an even field with some depth.  Especially after missing the start like that.  So we know he can really motor in wet ground.

Glad to be on in the Derby @ $15.00, didn't think he could win that today. Massive run, nothing out of that beats him in the derby.

Yep. Unless it's dry (but it's Syndey so it will probably be wet)

So do I. You have to go back a few generations in the pedigree to find an black type of all......a few Oaks winners in the 70's and 80's.

But all that old Generous, Sir Tristram and Sobig blood is still pumping through his veins.

Surely he had a fitness edge on his Aussie trained rivals today.
Something that would have been even more important in the muddy conditions.
Obviously has a great chance but will start unders in the Aust Derby.

Why do they call him Gingernuts?  I see that he is a chestnut.  Shocked

Excellent win and not surprised given the conditions today.

This weekend just shows good horses come from anywhere and don't need to cost much. Gingernuts was sold as a weanling for $5000 ( sold by Goodwood Stud ---part of the Fell family who have been in the business for decades) and on sold for $42,500 at the RtoRun sales.
  She Will Reign --A$20K.
Signify --won a listed race yesterday but won the Grp 1 Telegraph in Jan ( time 1.07.71) ---$5000

Something for the deep pockets going to the Easter sales to note.

I think his jockey out rode Tommy Berry.

I also think this bloke has Caulfield Cup written all over him, whether it is a WFA race or a handicap.

Too True! check out his sectional when winning the Avondale Guineas, wow, horses that can run home like him are few and far.....by Iffraaj, one of the most underrated sires on the planet, about 15k in NZ, about 45k in UK.......go figure?

Sunline was great ~ Dundeel was good

All comes down to personal preference

Gingernuts ticks all the boxes 1600m - 2400m scope maybe even further ~ middle distance powerhouse

Most exciting 3yr old I've seen come from NZ looking forward to his Spring Campaign

Gingernuts gearing up for Caulfield Cup 2017

Equal Caulfield Cup favourite Gingernuts is likely to have his lead-up races in New Zealand.

The Rosehill Guineas winner has surprised his trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards with how well he has returned from a short spell.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a horse improve as much as he did,” Autridge told NZ Racing Desk.

“He’s put on forty-kilos with his spell at Te Akau Stud and since he came back into work in May he’s been bouncing around like a two-year- old.

“We’re rapt with the way he’s going and the way he looks. He has certainly improved.

“He’s a horse that won the Avondale Guineas, our Derby and the Rosehill Guineas and wasn’t under any stress to win them so we wouldn’t know what we’ve really got next season until we step him up against the best older horses.”

Autridge said the plan was to give Gingernuts the first of two trials on August 1.

“We’re thinking he could run on the last two days of the Hawke’s Bay carnival and then go for the Caulfield Cup, but at the same time we are at the stage of looking through Melbourne programs and we’ll take into account the path that recent Caulfield Cup winners have taken,” he said.

Hard to rank him at this stage anywhere near some of the other exceptional NZ horses since Bonecrusher, ie Horlicks, Veandercross, The Phantom, Rough Habit, Our Maizcay, Xcellent, Ocean Park, Mongolian Khan, etc.

If he was mine I would devise an avoid Winx plan, up to and possibly including the Cox Plate. There are plenty of G1s to round and she can't run in them all. If she doesn't come up, revise.

Rather like the avoid Winx at all costs plan I came up with in the autumn for Hartnell. Now I know some of you are keen on the take Winx on at every possible opportunity plan but I would rather win races.Wink

Think this bloke has the potential to be better than MK at least. I really hope all the 3yo staying colts/geldings (and mares for that matter) kick on this year for the sake of our racing (and possibly sanity). A few good rivalries among the new spring 4YOs is just what we need - along with expected rapid improvement of the 3YOs. Can't wait personally.

Their aim is the Caulfield Cup and probably having his lead up runs in NZ.
