Importing European stayers is all in vogue in the past few years.

But never did I think we’d resort to importing a horse from a fledgling racing country like Hungary.

At today’s Randwick trials, we saw Esty Feni step out for Matthew Smith.   This 5yo stallion was the 2018 Hungarian Derby 2400m & St Leger 2800m winner.

Will be really interesting to see how this guy measures up to Australian racing.

Try ESTI FENY (Hun) instead.  Not Esty Feni.

That was close.  He was Horse of the year in Hungary at 3 years.  His sire Pidgeon Catcher and dam Ejtihaad were both Irish bred and sent to Hungary.  The dam was Shadwell's and is typically well bred.

14 starts 6 wins 4 seconds and 1 third  $104,869.  2 wins at 2 years; 4 wins at 3 years
Wins :  1400m (x2)  2200m (1)  2400m (2)  2800m (1)
Last two starts in Germany, not disgraced in listed company.

Ooops, yes sorry about the spelling mistake.

Perhaps the moderator can amend the thread title to ESTY to ESTI.

He’s an interesting one nonetheless

I've updated for you, vsp.

Probably because all the 'he said/she saids' would be edited  to enable the accused to say 'No I didn't'; otherwise I've no idea but there's an option to pay the Mayor $15 annually, unless inflation's hit the Village too, since last mentioned Wink

A friend of mine was responsible to for sourcing this horse. He first noticed him when the horse was taken to race in Germany.

I have been lucky enough to see him up close...magnificent individual..very solidly built. I think Lizzy will like what she sees in the mounting yard.

Previous connections had entered him to run in a big race in Italy but the sale was finalised just in time and new connections requested that he be scratched on the morning of the race. Certain to add a bit of colour over the Autumn.

Anyone notice this guy poking though late in the Bendigo Golden Mile?

First run for 2 years and beaten only 2.6 Len by Cherry Tortoni.

Seemed like he was a 2200-2400m horse back in Hungary, so not sure what Matt Smith has lined up for him this time.  Easter Cup next maybe?

Given how patient connections have been in getting him back to the track, I really hope he kicks on.

Also NANCHO (GER) ex A. Cummings, now with Archie in the same race beaten 4.3 lens, a big improvement on his only other Oz start which admittedly was a G2 vs. Listed.

This guy has put in 3 nice runs this campaign.

Based on his Wagga Cup run the horse is clearly screaming out for 2400m.

Yet here he is lining up for a 3rd consecutive run at 2000m in the Doomben Cup.  Can only imagine it’s a lead in run to the Premiers Cup over 2400m next weekend.

Ran a big race for 4th in the Q22 yesterday.  I’ve followed him pretty closely this prep and he’s been really good every start at distances I suspect are well below his optimum.

Surely one of the 2400m races in QLD over the next month or so will be his next start - either Tattersalls Cup in 2 weeks or the Caloundra Cup in 3 weeks.

Thanks SC.  I’m actually a last start winner thanks to Bold Bourbon winning the Quambatook Cup yesterday at Swan Hill - tipped exclusively here on TBV Wink

I’ve never had a bet on Esti Feny so far, just been an interested observer so far. But would be interested in others thoughts on the horse.

Those 2400m races I mentioned seem like ideal races for him.  My only concern is that he’s so many middle distance runs, that I hope he’s not jaded for a staying race at the end of a prep.

Enjoy reading your posts LH.

Suspect just one more run will most likely hand us the answer one way or the other regarding this particular fella.

Well he finally gets to 2400m today in the Tatts Cup at Eagle Farm.

Although I’ve been waiting for him to be in a suitable race, do I want to take $2.60 about him?  No thanks, he can go around without me at that price.

Not an unpredictable result.  I half expected that he’d be jaded after having too many middle distance runs before getting to 2400m.  He’d been screaming out for 2400m at least 2 starts ago.

That said, I can’t blame connections for having a go at the riches of Q22.

His 11th of 13 at Flemington on Cup Day last start doesn’t look good on paper.  But he presented well in the straight before his fitness gave out the last 200m, and it was on unsuitable soft ground.

But getting back onto a dry track in R6 at Newcastle today, I reckon he can improve sharply.  Will have a bit on for the place.

According to WHR.

Today, Esti Feny became the first Hungarian-bred stakes winner globally in 40 years with his win in the Gosford Gold Cup.

Overdose a G1 winner, was Hungarian based but was bred in Germany.

It has been 1672 days since his last win, which was in Hungary!

Sorry, Overdose was bred in GB.

Another Hungarian based G1 winner Nancho was German Bred.

Despite not being on him at big odds last start, having started this thread over 3 years ago I was pleased to see him finally chalk up a win.

He’s got wins at 2400-2800m in Europe & was really strong through the line at 2100m winning the Gosford Cup.

Yet rather than going to the 2400m of the Winter Cup, he’s dropping back in distance to a BM94 over 1800m.  Personally, Id prefer to back him at 2400m & the 1800m race he’s in tomorrow just doesnt seem the right placement to me.

A very encouraging first up effort today running home for 3rd in the Aust Cup Prelude.  I just hope Matthew Smith gets the horse to his proper staying trip sooner than later.  I’m certain this horse will show his best at 2200-2800m.
