Retired apprentice rider Stephen Brown Jr was airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday in an induced coma following a fall at the Wangaratta jumpouts.
The 20-year-old, who is the son of Flemington and Darwin trainer Stephen Brown, was the tallest jockey in the land at well over six feet when he had his last race ride at The Valley back in November of last year. He no longer holds a jockeys' licence but is a registered track rider. Brown began his apprenticeship in 2015 and rode a total of 40 winners. Racing Victoria released the following statement on Wednesday morning: "Racing Victoria can confirm that licensed track rider Stephen Brown Jr has been airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital following a fall at the Wangaratta jumpouts this morning," the statement said. "Stephen received immediate medical care from the on-course paramedic and was placed in an induced coma prior to transport. "RV will provide further updates on Stephen's condition once known." |

Some good signs but brain trauma concern for Stephen BrownSeptember 19, 2019 12:19 pm Tests have revealed “a little bit more positive news” but concerns remain following Stephen Brown’s track fall at Wangaratta yesterday. The former apprentice jockey was airlifted to Royal Melbourne hospital with cracked ribs, a crack in his neck, a punctured lung and concerns regarding potential brain trauma. Victorian Jockeys Association chief executive Matt Hyland told Racing Pulse this morning that there had been some promising signs but “the main concern is his brain.” “The latest update last night was that doctors were a little bit more positive with the scans and tests they ran. Fingers crossed there will be more positive news today,” Hyland said. Hyland said a horse Brown had been riding in a jumpout had broken down and another horse “went over the top of him.” “He was then placed in an induced coma by paramedics on course and choppered down to the Royal Melbourne.” Hyland said the Brown family was coping as well as could be expected. “They are tough racing stock, the Browns,” he said. |
