Thought it may be a bit of fun to discuss rule changes in different sports over the years. The changes, the reasons behind them & how they improved or changed the game. Lots of TBV members who have a passion for sport & some go back a fair way.

Well i’ll jump in oneonesit.
Malcom Johnstone was mentioned in the HOF discussion compared to today’s riders. I believe it was Malcom who changed apprentice claims etc. through amount of wins. Are many sports rules changed because of the ability of a participant? |

Walter Lindrum billiards. They changed the rules around cannons because he dominated matches so much with thousands of consecutive touches, forcing competition to just stay away.
Dally Messenger forced rule changes around punching or throwing the ball forward over players heads and regathering it yourself. (forward pass rule)

St.George were made the bogey man to have the tackle rule turned on its head in the great years of 55/67 or thereabouts.

Yes PT. Walter Lindrum was often spoken about my father. Absolute freak. Held the World Championship for 17 years until his retirement. Spent much of his career playing exhibition matches as others refused to play him. Games (billiards) typically first to score 24000 points - he would typically give 7000 points start. The cannon nursery was his forte - which resulted in the one of the rule changes made to try to overcome his dominance. Could literally be on the table continuously for hours racking up 4000 point breaks. Just one of the Lindrum family dynasty - grandfather, father, sisters, nephews who dominated the world in both billiards & snooker.

Caster Semenya. Being forced out of her sport if she doesn't take drugs.

A number of rule changes were made to Table Tennis after the Sydney 2000 Olympics. It was decided to make them to make the game more friendly to TV viewing. The scoring system changed from first to 21 points down to 11 points, the ball was made slightly larger (to slow the ball down so you could see it easier) & the server was made to throw the ball into the air (min 16cm) to take some of the advantage away from the server. I still play to 21.

Kevin Bartlett brought about a dropping the ball rule change.
Aussie Rules is becoming a non contact sport and is not half the game it used to be

Remember when the field goal in NRL was worth 2 points. Became a field goal kickathon for a few seasons until they took it back to one.

Rugby could take a bit of a lead as well & drop their field goal back to 2 from 3.

Eric Simms may have been one of the reasons it was changed.

Yep - no doubt. Would have struggled to hold a first grade position if not for his kicking (place & drop)

& how about the scrum rule changes in the NRL. Used to be a lucky dip who got the penalty. Not sure why they have them at all these days. Again - Rugby administrators could take note. Their 5 minute scrums are a blight on the game.

Also the corner flag change rule change in NRL has changed the game big time for the better. Wingers now always have a real crack whereas previously they were too concerned about going "out" & turning the ball over. Wingers have become pivotal to a champion team these days
