They have those sort of sprints in QLD, especially at the bush meets a fair bit. There is one next Saturday at Tower Hill. Have a look at the prizemoney... $700 with $350 to the winner. 27 horses nominated!

Race 4 - AMBO Open Trophy Race (800 METRES)
Of $700. 1st $350, 2nd $210, 3rd $140
Open Trophy Race, Set Weights, No age restriction, No sex restriction
Apprentices can claim.

Is that the shortest race distance in Australia for thoroughbreds?

Trying to think of a horse that would be best at that distance? I am Invincible was a bullet that ran out of gas very quickly

Who remembers the Qld speedster STAR OF FLORIDA? He still holds the 800m track record at Dalby, clocking a blistering 43:87 set in 2003.

Went on to win heaps of 1000m races in Sydney & Brisbane. All up 11 career wins between 800m-1110m range.

Star Of Florida sure was fast! Had a really limited distance range though and fell in a heap at the end of anything beyond it. Always struck me as a horse that could have won a group 1 if he had have had a better trainer. Did like him though.

My range is 1000m to 2000m .     I couldn't warm to 800m racing and beyond 2000m   the sit , canter , sprint is usually unpredictable.

The Newmarket , TJ, Okleigh Plate, Blue Diamond , Slipper ,   . It never ends , The great races in those distance ranges.

Many of Za-Im's progeny cut their teeth on that track and were very fast over the 800 or 900 distance,
Thinking Plateau Gold won there over 800m and Gold Coasts Bat out of Hell race over 900m two years running, the old boy is 9 now and still going strong.

That's interesting as I'd say the longer it goes the more predictable it is.
