Did anyone else just see SJ Wolfe in Albany kick a horse in full view of cameras?
Horse was Texan Blitz.

June 2017

Racing and Wagering WA stewards have opened an inquiry into a meltdown by jockey Shaun McGruddy when they quizzed him on an unplaced ride at Belmont Park today.

McGruddy abused stewards and stormed out of an inquiry after being told he had excessively restrained four-year-old Gauged in the Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (2200m).

He continued swearing outside the stewards’ room and in the weighing scales area.

Gauged raced keenly in early stages and was forcefully restrained near the winning post on his first lap of the staying race. Stewards questioned McGruddy after a veterinarian reported the grey gelding had abrasions inside his mouth.

“He lost his temper after we suggested he may have over-done it when restraining Gauged,” chief steward Brad Lewis said.

McGruddy shouted at stewards, saying they didn’t understand he had been near a rival’s heels and was in danger.

Stewards said McGruddy repeatedly shouted: “You don’t know what you are talking about.”

He hurriedly left the room while stewards were still questioning him.

“After explaining he had to restrain Gauged to avoid Dance Master’s heels, he became agitated and abusive,” Lewis said.

“He made offensive remarks to the stewards’ panel during the inquiry and on leaving the room. We had not excused him to leave.

“An inquiry into his conduct was opened and adjourned to a time and date to be fixed.”

Further, on Inquiry Jockey Shaun McGruddy (TEXAN BLITZ) pleaded guilty to a charge under AR.175(q) for improper conduct towards his mount when behind the barriers prior to the start of this race. Stewards have adjourned this inquiry to consider the matter of penalty.

Do these circumstances call for auto drug testing?

I'd rather not see Mental Health introduced into the matter. These days Mental Health has become a catch all excuse for bad behaviour.

Stewards on Friday 23 November 2018 concluded an inquiry involving Jockey S McGruddy which had been commenced at the Albany race meeting on 18 November 2018 during which Mr McGruddy had pleaded guilty to a charge under AR175(q). The particulars of the charge being that behind the barriers prior to Race 3 when dismounted from TEXAN BLITZ he had kicked that horse which in the opinion of the Stewards is improper conduct. This inquiry had been adjourned to consider the question of penalty.
Jockey McGruddy was issued a fine of $5,000 with $2,000 of this fine being suspended for a period of 2 years on the condition that he does not offend, in relation to any form of improper conduct towards a horse, within that period.
Stewards further directed that he must within the next 28 days attend professional counselling in regard to anger management and following at least three visitations provide the Stewards with a report from his counsellor detailing the dates attended and completion or otherwise of the course.
When considering the question of penalty took into account Mr McGruddy’s plea of guilty, previous penalties issued for related matters, the need for deterrence to reinforce and maintain the high standards of animal welfare, the negative effect that an incident such as this can have on the image of racing.

What’s the point of suspending such a piddling amount?

If it’s supposed to be a deterrent, make it $100k. Send a clear message that another offence will be a 12 month hole in his budget PLUS, get inside his head a bit & potentially compromise his game for the probationary period.
