Wild horse population surveys are prepared by Dr Stuart Cairns of the University of New England’s School of Environmental and Rural Science on behalf of NPWS using a method known as distance sampling.

These were undertaken in 2014, 2019, 2020, 2022 and October 2023 – the last of which estimated KNP’s wild horse population as between 12,934 and 22,536 horses, with a best estimate of 17,432 remaining.

This number has been widely disputed by locals and brumby advocates who have suggested the population now sits in the low thousands.

In New South Wales Introduction by NPWS of a Standard Operating Procedure 2023 in an attempt to remove the benefit of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to avoid prosecution for cruelty, is being assessed. There is no doubt, many Brumbies will have suffered a cruel and painful death.

In Victoria, Parks Victoria shot the entire surviving 100 Bogong Brumbies, yet have failed to trap any Brumbies during 2022 and 2023 despite the 2021 Management Plan giving priority to rehoming. There are approved rehomers, yet Parks Victoria have moved forward to vary the Management Plan, without consultation.

International experts in Equine DNA and Genetics  are shocked by  plans of the New South Wales Labor Government to shoot brumbies that have been proven to carry the rare Rabicano and Birdcatcher genes

Snowy Mountains Brumby Registry specialise in collecting  and studying DNA samples of brumbies and have been working with University of New South Wales for a number of years,

News that Rabicano genes carried by some brumbies can be traced back to horses that arrived on the first fleet sheds new light on the historical and cultural histories of brumbies.

Brumbies photographed by Ian Brown hold the rare birdcatcher gene, which is also of interest to international equine experts and horse racing enthusiasts as some of the most famous racehorses carried this rare gene.

Penny Sharpe must STOP the carnage and all plans to engage in a shooting spree of brumbies in retention zones, or any other part of the Park, those that are in fact protected by Heritage Brumby Legislation.

There has been no count of brumbies in retention zones to establish that she is not already in breach of the Legislation in force to protect these precious bloodlines as 3,000 must be retained in those specifically designated retention zones. Once numbers are established and likely there are less than the Legislatively prescribed 3,000 any numbers in excess can easily be managed by rehoming with approved rehomers.

Nor has Penny Sharpe made a declaration about how many brumbies must live in each of the four zones.

This is crucial information if she is to comply with Legislation
