Last night at Bendigo Harness Race 8, place pool was $74,873!!! About 10 to 20 times a normal pool.

What was interesting though, is during the betting the place tote markets were all over the place, and as they went over the line, the winner was $4.70 win, $3.80 place. The tote then declared the winner at $4.70 and $1.10, but the final tote approximates which ultimately match the match the declared are stil showing $4.70 and $3.80. Something strange went on with this race?

Basically all the pool is on the favourite.

The tab shows the approximates using the normal calculation but the dividend declared is after they "steal" from the other placegetters to pay on the fav and avoid losing on the race.

There were a few of these a few months ago that were similar things with very short priced favourites.

That bet was probably placed by a punter wanting to increase his tote turnover to retain the rate of his rebates.

The problem is the way TAB display place approximates: they are ignoring the fact that if the money back horse runs in then most of the pool is refunded, so there is little left to redistribute to the other two place getters.

Tatts on the other hand display place approximates that accurately reflect the payouts if the money back horse runs in. In the event that it misses, the punters on the placed horses get a very pleasant surprise. What TAB is doing is disingenuous and should not be allowed.

Given the horse running second was $1.01 fixed odds to place, it does seem that the bet is to meet a threshold. Again the situation with Tatts is different. A horse paying less than money back is treated as ‘refund’ if it places, and no points are earned. They changed the rules after a 200K place bet on Black Caviar earned a 14K rebate without the tote gaining a cent. No prizes for guessing which syndicate that was.
