Misbehaving? Is hooked on drugs, riding in races. Are you serious?

Amphetamines or related compounds are common in jockeys- they keep the weight off- I don’t see the difference between a jockey taking something like Duromine (Phentermine) vs methamphetamines of some kind as there is ZERO chance a Dr (contrary to what Ms Payne’s supposedly admitted to) would prescribe an underweight, low BMI individual a drug with significant side effects especially when they’re in control of a huge animal at great speed

Gold Coast Magic Millions-winning jockey Luke Tarrant has agreed to undergo drug rehabilitation after facing a Queensland court on drug-related charges.

The Courier-Mail newspaper reports Tarrant, 25, faced the Caloundra Magistrates Court this week on charges relating to drug possession and production.

The Courier-Mail reported that police found 12 marijuana plants, 54.2g of marijuana, 2g metehamphetamines, Viagra, six tabs, a strip of LSD and dozens of drug utensils on his possession between February 7 and July 24.

Police prosecutor Brendan Newman said despite numerous chances, Tarrant kept using drugs, skipping court and appeared to have “very little insight” into his crimes.

The court heard that after Tarrant's mother’s sudden death when he was 17, Tarrant turned to drugs but was finally getting help through a rehabilitation centre.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said Tarrant was better serving time in a rehabilitation centre than jail, and sentenced him to a strict 30-month probation period that included regular drug testing.

“Your commitment to that order will get a lot easier, but it’s better than going to jail which is what will happen if you’re not successful at this,” he said.

All sorts of reasons for a jock to take meth, sadly.....
WWII Drug The German Granddaddy of Crystal Meth

Crystal meth is notorious for being highly addictive and ravaging countless communities. But few know that the drug can be traced back to Nazi Germany, where it first became popular as a way to keep pilots and soldiers alert in battle during World War II.https://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/crystal-meth-origins-link-back-to-nazi-germany-and-world-war-ii-a-901755.html

A piece that really made me tune in was when it was claimed they gave the drug so the soldiers would KILL.
Pentavin.
Powerful stuff. No wonder there  are the shootings in america

Birchley closing down stable is the word. Half horses to Munce and other to Gold Coast. Interesting if true.

From the letsgohorseracing website. What happens to his charges?
ONE of Queensland’s top trainers for many years looks set to quit his career but fortunately will not be lost to racing.

Birchley, one of eight licensees drawn into the controversial Aquanita Inquiry in Melbourne, has advised owners with horses in his stable of changes to LB Racing commencing on September 30.

IN a circular this week, Birchley wrote:

‘After 30 plus years of training, I will take on a new role which is focused on developing our Archer Park spelling and training complex. This will also give me more time to devote to bloodstock selection, whether it be weanlings, yearlings or tried horses.

Archer Park Racing Pty Ltd will be responsible for managing all horses that are currently being trained by myself at LB Racing, and the horses will be trained by either Toby and Trent Edmonds or Chris Munce.

With these changes come staffing changes. All staff have been integral to LB Racing and in the restructure it is hoped that most staff will retain their roles. While we work through these changes, it will be business as usual providing the best care for your horses. Matt Henderson will continue to support me in his role as Property Manager at Archer Park.

By placing the horses with Toby, Trent and Chris we will also be able to race our horses in NSW and take advantage of the increased prizemoney that is on offer there as well as access the BOBS monies we have not been able to compete for over the last 20 months.

I will analyse each horse individually to determine which trainer would be best suited to your horse's needs. I will also continue to have ongoing contact with the horses and trainers regarding the care, pre-training and recuperation between races.

This change of structure will enable Archer Park Racing Pty Ltd to:

. Diversify our training methods

. Dedicate more time to identifying potential purchases for the Archer Park Racing team

. Focus on ensuring each horse is receiving the best training, pre-training and spelling care in the country.

Archer Park Racing Pty Ltd look forward to providing first class management services for your horse, regular detailed communication, many great experiences and, hopefully, plenty of winners.

I would like to take the opportunity to personally say ‘Thank You’ to all of the owners that have stuck solid over the last 20 months. It has been a testing time for us all and your support has been unbelievable. I look forward to repaying your faith over the coming years with some outstanding and good value purchases.

Watch out for upcoming correspondence on our New Zealand Tour January 2020 and other racing functions where you will have the chance to meet Toby Edmonds and Chris Munce.’
Gambling has brought our family closer together. We had to move to a smaller house.

VCAT would have forced a thing called a compulsory conference in their cases- it’s a day set aside basically to make a deal to resolve the issues- it’s all entirely confidential too so imagine if Aquanita trainers let fly on what they could do to integrity staff with what they know... I could be wrong but the length of time that has passed is grossly unusual for VCAT.... hence it’s gone quiet because it’s all gone away.... poof just like that

Yes Skip, I think you are on the money.  Best way to keep a clean sheet, for all concerned. Robert S, well he flitted off into the sunset, once they hand in their license there is no need or compulsion to appear before any governing body. If you can't cross examine the defendant you can't prosecute your case, this is a sad indictment on AUS Racing.

We wait now to see what Vasil and the other accused do.......

Isn’t Weir doing the same thing? I’m sure he’s focusing on spelling, pre training, and no doubt he’s devoting time to Bloodstock selection. Of course, let’s not forget the “real” income he acquires is through his passion for raising Black Angus. Any thoroughbred that steps foot on either Weir or Birchleys properties at any age or stage of prep should be automatically sanctioned from running in Australia. Why should either of these two grubs be allowed to earn a cent from the industry they have already illegally gained from.

I am sure Skippy is close to the money. Save the scandal and let the crooks lay low for a while. Pulling the strings behind the scenes. Racing too scared to suspend all the cheats, or else there would be a lots of stable changes

Just saw Liam Birchley interviewed on TC. What a grub, laughing about when and what he was going to do when he stops training. Remember Liam, you never had many options other than quitting. According to your own admission you didn’t remember either your texting while drinking, or being involved in arranging Raceday treatments for your horses. Not everybody believed your story champ.

Ahhhh but this could be funnier depending on which charges were cleared....

Liam Birchley’s appeal win could lead to reduced bans for Robert Smerdon, Tony Vasil and Stuart Webb

Hartnell’s huge heart keeps him in reckoning
Flemington tips: Everything you need for raceday
Four of the principal figures in the notorious Aquanita case, including Robert Smerdon, could have their penalties reduced after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal rejected some of the original sanctions.

Liam Birchley’s appeal against a one-year ban was successful, against involvement in a sophisticated doping ring from 2010-17, principally on a technicality relating to the wording of charges.

The Queenslander, who recently retired from training, was among four of the eight people charged over the scheme to appeal.

Smerdon, who was found guilty on 115 charges by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board, earned a partial reprieve from VCAT.

The so-called driving force behind the clandestine bicarbonate on-course rorting was found guilty of 115 counts of improper behaviour and disqualified for life and fined $90,000 by the RAD Board.

But VCAT disagreed with 37 of those counts, leaving Smerdon with the prospect of pushing for a lighter penalty.

A plea hearing with submissions for revised penalties is expected in October.

Stuart Webb, who was banned for four years on three counts, was found guilty on one count by VCAT.

Tony Vasil, who was outed for three years on six counts, was found by guilty on two counts by VCAT.

Four others involved in the doping operation – Greg Nelligan (life), Denise Nelligan (life), Trent Pennuto (two years) and Danny Garland (one year) – chose not to appeal.

All eight people were linked to the now defunct Aquanita Racing organisation.

In total, they faced 271 counts of improper and fraudulent conduct over a seven-year period.

The group was detected after Greg Nelligan was caught attempting to inject Lovani with a modified syringe containing bicarbonate soda paste at Flemington on October 7, 2017.

The “top-ups” boosted stamina and stifled the build-up of lactic acid in horses during races.

A subsequent investigation extracted thousands of incriminating text messages from Nelligan’s mobile phone.

The texts linked the doping operation to some of Australia’s most important races, including the 2015 Melbourne Cup.

RAD Board judge John Bowman described the scandal as the darkest chapter in Australian racing.

How To Play SuperCoach Racing

Racing is the newest addition to the SuperCoach roster - here's how you can quickly set up your own stable.

Racing Victoria, which appealed against Birchley’s one-year ban, was on Friday night considering its position.

“Our primary objective is to uphold the integrity of the sport and to enforce the Rules of Racing to ensure that every horse is able to compete on a level playing field,” Racing Victoria executive general manager Jamie Stier said.

“We welcome the Tribunal’s decision to find Robert Smerdon, Tony Vasil and Stuart Webb guilty of serious offences that have undermined the integrity of the sport.

“We acknowledge the Tribunal’s decision regarding the appeal by Liam Birchley and, having just received notification of their decision, we will now take our time to carefully review the judgement before considering our options.”
