Pakenham trainer Matthew Leek is the latest to become embroiled in the cobalt saga.

Racing Victoria stewards announced on Tuesday that Leek’s horse Champagne Kisses returned a sample of 531 micrograms per litre of urine in a pre-race test on March 3.

The mare finished 11th in the Evergreen Turf F&M Maiden Plate (1400m) at Racing.com Park.

The reserve sample came back with a cobalt concentration of 600 micrograms per litre of urine.

Cobalt is a prohibited substance in accordance with the Rules of Racing at a concentration in excess of 200 micrograms per litre in urine.

Stewards initially informed Leek of the irregularity on 23 March 2016.

He was advised of the confirmatory findings on Tuesday, and stewards are continuing their investigation.

The cobalt scandal has engulfed the racing industry for the past 16 months, taking down some of the biggest trainers in the game.

Danny O’Brien, Mark Kavanagh and father-son combination Lee and Shannon Hope were disqualified for cobalt offences, but they are all appealing to VCAT.

Champion trainer Peter Moody was suspended for six months for a cobalt offence, while Lenny Xuereb and Terry and Karina O’Sullivan have also had horses record positives to the prohibited substance but those investigations are continuing.

In March, RV stewards decided against charging trainer Leek’s father John after his horse Spirit Cent also returned a cobalt positive.

The horse returned a sample of 228 micrograms per litre of urine, but the measurement of uncertainty in the reserve sample (210 with a 20-microgram level of uncertainty) meant charges couldn’t be sustained.

No, that was Darren Smith's where they found traces of urine in the cobalt samples.

Matthew Leek disqualified for 12 months

By AAP

Trainer Matthew Leek has been disqualified for 12 months after being found guilty of attempted race day administration to two horses and also destroying potential evidence.

The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board found the trainer guilty of two charges issued by Racing Victoria stewards, and at a penalty hearing on Monday issued a six-month disqualification for each.

The board ruled the penalties be served cumulatively.

The particulars of the first charge were that during a race day stable inspection on August 8 last year, stewards alleged Leek was in possession of a 30ml syringe containing a substance, an uncapped needle and one 100ml bottle each of L-Carnitine and Mitachondral which he intended to administer to two horses, or at least one, due to race later that day.

Stewards also alleged Leek deliberately disposed of liquid in a syringe which they said had the effect of destroying relevant evidence and the RAD Board found the trainer guilty of improper conduct.

Another charge in relation to keeping treatment records was dismissed.

The panel said Leek's actions to dispose of the liquid deserved the strongest condemnation.

"Your particular offence involves a blatant and brazen attempt to tamper with, conceal or destroy evidence whilst what was at least a preliminary inquiry was taking place," the RAD Board judgment said.

"It deserves the strongest condemnation.

"A clear message must be sent, and the public would expect nothing less.

When does the suspension start? It's so wrong that they can still train after they've been found guilty.

Is there any way to watch the post race interviews? I was out today and missed it.

Cheers for that. I find it bemusing that they get around him. It's like they're comforting him. Piss off. They should refuse to interview these people. It's absolutely insulting having to watch that crap.

Yep, very frustrating when you see the racing media treat convicted cheats as if they are the victims.

Matthew Leek fined $5000

5 December, 2018

Pakenham trainer Matthew Leek has been fined $5000 at the conclusion of a hearing into a fight with fellow trainer John Gunning late last season.

The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Wednesday said the charge under AR 175, which covers misconduct, improper conduct or unseemly behaviour, had been proven. The charge was laid after an altercation between the trainers at the Pakenham racecourse in June.

The RAD Board heard Gunning went to speak with Leek at the tie-up stalls at the June 27 meeting, which concluded with a verbal exchange and then Gunning being punched and/or kneed by Leek.

What a dirty low act hitting an elderly trainer like that bringing his retirement from training forward.
