Major infrastructure projects are too expensive, because of excessive union influence. The blow-out in costs keeps a lot of badly-needed projects, on the drawing board. There is a history in Australia of powerful unions that were representing only a small proportion of the workforce, but in key areas, dictating to all and sundry, including less powerful unions, think of the old days of the wharfies, who regularly held the place to ransom, because they controlled trade movement.

Even when unionisation was high, it was the ones with muscle that got the benefits, one has only to look at the cost of comparable projects a couple of decades apart, where the cost has gone up 10 X times, to realise that there is considerable sponging involved, I think the big construction groups are basically just passing the cost of corruption on to the taxpayer.

The Chinese built a railway up to high altitude Tibet, through atrocious terrain, that would have had the CFMEU claiming danger money, frost-bite allowance, etc etc for a relatively modest several billion dollars. It is amazing what sweated labour can do, here we go to the opposite extreme, pampered labour, on such projects.
