Hi all,

Interested to hear peoples views/experiences with Starcraft.
Arrowfield have announced today at $11k for 2014. Would appear on face value to be good value for a somewhat proven horse, proven to be a solid stallion but not a great stallion, 12 southern hemisphere stakeswinners and 2 nh stakeswinners. Had 13 yearlings at 2014 Easter so Inglis obviously still like his stock. From what I have seen he does appear to stamp his stock, big, strong strapping individuals.

Would appear to be both a good breed to race prospect and even possibly sell the progeny still at a variety of sales incl Magic Millions, Classic, Premier and even Easter.

Am considering sending a Danehill line mare to him

Thoughts and experience with his stock

A lot of them seem to show promise but then plateau. He is a very dominant type setter so probably good for breed to racers and particularly those breeding maiden mares looking for a stronger first foal.

So after 7 seasons at Arrowfield, Starcraft is off to Rosemont Stud in Victoria, still at the previously announced $11,000:

Arrowfield’s Chairman John Messara says, "Starcraft has already justified our faith in him as a sire of top-class performers and, with around 300 foals coming on stream from his latest four books we’re confident there’s plenty of good news ahead of him. All of Starcraft’s current shareholders, including Arrowfield, will retain ownership of the horse, and we’ll be sending several mares to him at Rosemont this season.”

Messara adds, "Anthony Mithen’s personal enthusiasm for the horse is a major factor in our decision to move Starcraft. When we also considered Rosemont’s ability to support him and the appeal of a fresh pool of mares, a move to Victoria made excellent sense at this stage of Starcraft’s career.”

Rosemont Stud owner Anthony Mithen says, "Starcraft is a horse we’ve targeted for some time now. We contemplated approaching Arrowfield 12 months ago but had our hands full re-launching Starspangledbanner. The timing for us this year was perfect.

"Starcraft is such a stunning looker and gets great-looking stock which is priority number one for us at Rosemont. Type is everything and he produces some of the most attractive yearlings around that sell incredibly well - up to $650,000 at Easter this year.”

Arrived on the scene with a big bang with seven stakes-winners in his first crop of 111 live foals, and followed with four from his 2nd crop of 114.

But it's been seriously downhill since then with just two stakes-winners from the 213 live foals that are now rising 3, 4 and 5.

Indeed only two stakes-winners over the last two years, just 56 mares in 2013, and has never finished higher than 45th on the General Sires List.  Can't see him improving on that down in Vic.

Really surprised he has dropped off. His mare numbers have disappointed big time. Not normal to have such a sharp degradation in stakeswinners.

Seriously considered him for one of my mares but feared by the time it hits the sales and if the decline continues I would have to race it.

Good luck to Rosemont, hope it turns around

Didn't the owner support him by buying really top class mares getting them in foal to him and reselling the mares for a number of years?
If so probably why he went well in first couple of crops - I assume that dropped off, thus the drop off in better winners??

Talk about a rapid fall down the depth chart. His current yearling crop are off a $44k service fee.

$35K is actually a pretty good average for that particular sale.

The fact that the announcement comes so late suggests the move was the result of Arrowfield receiving very few enquiries about the stallion for the coming season.
Have done a quick analyse of his stake-winners and can't really find any particular pattern to them.

You would think that this next crop/year after? would be good once they saw the boom start he had with many good mares sent to him in years 3 & 4....or have they already passed through?

The old boy has served 180 mares in the last two seasons and the "toss the Boss Deal" seems to be getting a few people in, they are usually decent types.
I would pay the $4,400 (thats the price if you ask) up front at LFG and skip the deal myself, but I am whimp each to their own.
