He had two runs this prep, both good 3rd placings.
Still in the Melbourne Cup noms, does anyone know Lloyd's plans?

Darren Weir could learn a thing or two from Lloyd Williams.

Good win but would need to find improvement to win either cup on that, Metrop is traditionally a rung below the big ones and hardly a vintage renewal this year.

Nice work by Lloyd to get a big race with FOUNDRY. He's now passed the Melb Cup ballot clause. But with only 50kgs that still only jumps him up to about 64th on the order of entry. He's going to need a decent weight penalty and even then might need some luck to squeeze into the field.

Was there any comments from the stable post race about whether FOUNDRY would have another start before the Melb Cup?

A shame Lloyd didn't support the other black type staying race today. That 2400m RM Ansett Classic at Mornington was a deplorable Listed race. Lloyd could have easily won that with one of his 2nd stringers like HANS HOLBEIN, CROCODILE ROCK or ALOFT.   Maybe they need to shift that race back to Caulfield on Underwood Stks day to boost its profile?

Maybe he can go to the Herbert Power given its in 2 weeks instead of the usual 1 week after the Metrop? That'd mean they'd have the option of the Moonee Valley Cup or Lexus if they want to have another throw at the stumps to get into the cup.

1kg penalty, takes him to 51kgs in both Cups.

Still only 60th in order of entry for Melb Cup & 44th in Caulfield Cup.

FOUNDRY has been a blue blood, but his new Ballarat-based connections want him to be known as “the battlers’ horse” as they try to capture votes for the $5 million All-Star Mile.

Foundry, by champion sire Galileo, began life in Ireland in Aidan O’Brien’s stables before he was bought by Lloyd Williams. He spent five years at Macedon Lodge, where his highlight was a win in the 2017 Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap

Late last year he was bought by Coghills Creek trainer Terry Kelly for $7000 from a Lloyd Williams dispersal sale in December.

“He’s now owned by a syndicate of 22, which includes long-time stable clients and different syndicates made up of shearers, school teachers, builders and policeman,” Kelly said.

“On the back of that we want him to be known as the battlers’ horse and for voters to get behind him to get him in (to the All-Star Mile).

“The owners are based all over the state in Lakes Entrance, Donald, St Arnaud, Mildura and Ballarat, so they’re all planning to get people to vote for him.”

The stable has planned a strategic assault on the voting for the All-Star Mile, which will be run at Flemington on March 16, to gain a start.

“It’s well planned by the new owners, who have got in touch with friends and family members to vote for him,” Kelly said.

“They all know what to do. It’s going to be a well co-ordinated campaign, and I would think he’ll be right up there in the voting in the early stages.”

Kelly said they were trying to turn the clock back to 2014, when Foundry finished second in the Blamey Stakes over 1600m at Flemington after winning first-up over 1400m.

“We’re not going to improve him on what Lloyd Williams has done,” he said. “What we’re trying to do is to get him to recapture his form by training him to be fit and fresh.

“We were looking at races such as the Hobart Cup, but we were never going to get him ready for that race. The All-Star Mile fitted perfectly into his preparation.”

“He’s settled in well here. He enjoys going out into the hills on our property for a trail ride for a couple of hours. His capacity for work is something I’ve never seen before.”

The nine-year-old hasn’t started since he finished second in the 2017 Bendigo Cup, two runs after his win in the Group 1 Metropolitan.

Kelly has planned for Foundry to have one start before the All-Star Mile in the Carlyon, which will be held after voting has closed.

Kelly has spent the past five years developing his Coghills Creek property, 25km out from Ballarat, which includes a 1600m straight grass training track and a 1600m straight sand track.

Voting opens on Monday on the All-Star Mile website.

The last thing Coghills Creek trainer Terry Kelly had on his mind when he bought veteran Foundry from Lloyd Williams in September was a berth in the $5 million All-Star Mile at Flemington on March 16.

“We bought him to be a country cups horse,” Kelly said. “A race like the Wagga Cup or the Warrnambool Cup was what we were thinking. Then we saw the All-Star and thought that’s when he would be ready to race so why not give it a go.”

Kelly and the nine-year-old gelding’s 20 owners then set about devising a strategy.

On Thursday, many of them waited at Kelly’s property for news of his fate but they need not have worried — with 5558 votes he was sixth in the vote.

When the message was positive, it sparked great celebrations.

The son of Galileo, who won the Group 1 Metropolitan at Randwick in September 2017, was in the world’s richest mile race five months after being bought for $8500 at a Williams’ online dispersal sale.

In further good news, jockey John Allen has committed to riding Foundry.

Kelly has spent the past five years developing his Coghills Creek property, near Ballarat, and has a team of nine horses.

Kelly said it was a concerted team effort to gather votes.

There have been sponsored equestrian events in Ballarat, a rodeo and a polocross event on the past two weekends. Part-owners went armed with iPads to secure votes and Kelly estimated they got 400 each time.

Another part-owner, Alec Julius, runs a fishing trip business in Darwin and he managed to gain lots of votes.

“There were so many owners who put the hard yards in. Also we became the only Ballarat horse in the race and the locals have got right behind him. When I’d go down the street, people would grab me and tell me they’ve voted for me,” Kelly said.

“I’ve got to say it’s one of the most exciting days I’ve had in racing getting into the field.”

Kelly realises it’s going to be a tall order up against Grunt, Alizee, Happy Clapper and Amphitrite, but he’s confident Foundry can finish close to the top five.

“He’s thriving. He’s been working here on my property and we’ve also been taking him to Black Rock beach (near Barwon Heads) and Steve Pateman’s property to work three times a week,” he said.

Kelly will attempt to turn back time with Foundry, who finished second in the 2014 Blamey Stakes over 1600m at Flemington
