Moonlight Cloud retired

Darryl Sherer - 9/01/2014
High-class French mare Moonlight Cloud, who ran Black Caviar to a head at Ascot in 2013, has been retired and will be mated with champion sire Galileo.

George Strawbridge’s homebred six-time Group 1-winning daughter of Invincible Spirit finished a disappointing sixth in the Group I Hong Kong Mile on December 8 last year at her last start.

Moonlight Cloud won 12 of her 21 starts. Her last three starts in France in 2013 resulted in Group I victories, beginning with the Prix Maurice de Gheest (1300m), the Prix Jacques le Marois (1600m) and then the Prix de la Foret (1400m) on October 6.

"Monsieur Strawbridge thought that would be it in Hong Kong but he took some time to reflect back in America.” trainer Freddy Head told the Racing Post.

"He (Strawbridge) always favoured sending her to stud at this stage and I think he was a little worried that, as she was already six, she might not be able to perform quite so brilliantly in the future.”

Moonlight Cloud won three straight runnings of the Prix Maurice de Gheest (1300m) at Deauville. Marchand de Sable, the only other horse to win three runnings of the straight-course sprint, was also trained by Head.

"She's a great mare with a lot of class and is also very gentle and kind. She really is a sweetheart of a horse,"he said.

A (not particularly good) pic of her at trackwork before the HK mile - hope she enjoys the next stage of her life:
