Hallo,

maybe it hasn’t reached the shores of Australia, yet.

Urban Sea (by Miswaki) has died during foaling, she became 20 years old.

She was as great race mare, winning the Prix de Arc de Triomphe, Prix d’Harcourt, Prix Exbury, Prix Gontaut-Biron and was placed:  Prince of Wales Stakes, E.P. Taylor Stakes, Prix Minerve, Prix Gaby, Prix Vermeille, ARAG Preis, all off them Group Races in Europe (France, Germany and Canada). She raced from 2 -5 years.

Her career as broodmare was a success, something was rarely happened. She became the dam of Galileo, My Typhoon, Black Sam Bellamy (stood some seasons in Germany, now in Ireland), Melikah, All too beautiful etc. Her last racing offspring so far, Sea The Stars (by  Cape Cross, a 2 year old) won the Beresford Stakes in Ireland

Urban Sea belongs in my home country to the long established foundation mare Alveole (bred in 1889) and was purchased for the Schlenderhan Stud. Her family has produced dozens of top race horses and broodmares see Alchimist, Arjaman, Aditi, Asterblute, Alba, Agio, Adlerflug and a host of others.

Here in Germany the sires Tertullian and Terek are from the same branch, but in their case Allegretta, the grand dam is the common ancestor.

For your information I show you a summary:

Fam. 9-h          Tertullian (C) by Miswaki, Anno (C) by Lombard, Amethysta (F) by Gulf Pearl, Asterblüte (F) by PharisÞFam. Maid of Masham/LusciousÛ Urban Sea, Galileo, Black Sam Bellamy, Adlerflug

Btw, I was very surprised to see Viewed, The Melbourne cup winner last year traces to the same dam. The common ancester is St. Alvere.

Best regards, Ticino

What a truly wonderful mare she's been Ticino - all good things come to an end but what a terrible shame for the old girl that she never got to spend any time with her latest born Cry. Did they manage to save him/her?

Yes they did save the foal who is doing well with the foster mother.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Unfortunately we have to go back to Anatevka to find the closest relative in Australasia, the granddam of Azzurro who has been very very disspointing at sud.

It will be interesting to see how Amadiora by Kings Best goes as a mum, Amatista by Scenic is another interesting brrodmare prospect she visited Kings Best to produce the filly Ave Amina who ran last to Queen Of Queens at her one and only appearence to date.

Azzurro herself visited Galileo to produce the gelded Cee Dubai who is struggling around the provincials.

161 11- Sea The Stars 216 3 9-0 John M Oxx 92 M J Kinane 112 101 126
Top-class pedigree, out of Arc winner who has produced three Group/Grade 1 winners, headed by Galileo; looked excellent prospect himself too last year when beating some smart sorts in good finish to the Beresford Stakes at the Curragh last September but another who has been the subject of mixed messages this spring; yet to race on faster than good (should be effective on it).

Goes around in the 2000 guineas tonight.

I haven't seen the race yet, but Sea The Stars has won the 2000 Guineas by 1½ lengths from Delegator with Gan Amhras (a son of Galileo) in 3rd place.

Galileo's Half Brother Captures English 2000 Guineas
Mark Smith - Sunday, 3 May 2009

The John Oxx-trained Sea The Stars added another chapter to the remarkable story of his dam Urban Sea when he claimed Saturday’s English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Ridden by veteran jockey Mick Kinane for owner breeder David Tsui, Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) defeated the favourite Delegator (Dansili) by a length and a half with Gan Amhras (Galileo) three-quarters of a length down in third.

"This means an awful lot and training good horses like this is what keeps you doing it,” Oxx told PA Sport
"This also means an awful lot to this horse's owners (the Tsui family), who aren't here today.
"I am delighted with him. He is a horse with a big future. He has everything - speed, temperament, size and strength.
"He is just like Azamour. He has such a presence in the yard and horses like him get you out of bed in the morning."

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) heroine Urban Sea (Miswaki) died recently at the age of 20, due to foaling complications at the Irish National Stud. Her Invincible Spirit colt survived and was placed on a nurse mare.

What a magnificent legacy she has left at stud.

A half-sister to Two Thousand Guineas (G1) winner, former shuttler, King's Best (Kingmambo), Urban Sea’s first foal Urban Ocean (Bering) was a Group 3 winner Ireland.
Second foal Melikah (Lammtarra), was a Listed winner who was runner-up in the Epsom Oaks (G1) and third in the Irish Oaks (G1).

Urban Sea hit the big-time with her third foal Galileo (pictured left) (Sadler’s Wells), who captured the English and Irish Derbies as well as the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) in 2001. He subsequently has become an outstanding sire in Europe.

Galileo’s dual Group 1 winning brother Black Sam Bellamy came next and he was followed by another brother Atticus, who did not race.

Another full sister, All Too Beautiful, a 1.1 million guinea weanling, was a Group 3 winner in Ireland and was second in the Epsom Oaks.

Urban Sea’s seventh foal a sixth stakes-winner came with My Typhoon (Giant’s Causeway), a record 1.8 million guineas weanling filly. Raced in the United States by Live Oak Stud, My Typhoon captured 8 stakes races including the 2007 Diana Stakes (G1) at Saratoga on her way to earning over $1.6 million.

The Group 3 placed filly Cherry Hinton (Green Desert) broke the stakes winning sequence, while Urban Sea’s ninth foal Sea's Legacy (Green Desert) did not race.

Sea The Stars, a son of former shuttler Cape Cross ( pictured left), is her tenth foal. She had failed to produce a live foal in the two seasons prior to the birth of the Invincible Spirit colt.

A mare of this quality could have gone to any stallion in the world. Looking at her offspring there is a bit of variety in sires both as far as pedigree and cost. Clearly she could get a good one from a variety of sources. And the breeders didnt try to go just for the most expensive mating.

interesting to note her final foal was by invincible spirit, i know he's kicking goals overseas but clearly disappointing here. But if he warranted a mare of this quality perhaps her is a cheap potential broodmare sire in Oz??? his fillies are quite cheap.

Sea The Stars - Epsom Derby 06.06.2009

Sea The Stars storms clear in the Derby to extend the remarkable Classic run of his dam, Urban Sea

  PICTURE: EDWARD WHITAKER

How legend of 'goddess' Urban Sea lives on

 By Nancy Sexton4.57PM 15 JUN 2009

THE trophy for this year's Derby, which depicted Arthur Budgett standing with his Derby-winning half-brothers Blakeney and Morston, could not have been more apt after Christopher Tsui's homebred Sea The Stars strode away with the Epsom showpiece to emulate his half-brother, the 2001 winner Galileo.

Sadly, their dam Urban Sea died in March after foaling an Invincible Spirit colt at the Irish National Stud but she leaves behind an incredible legacy, not just for the Tsui family but for the whole breeding industry.

Sea The Stars is the fourth winner at the top level out of the mare following Galileo, Black Sam Bellamy, and My Typhoon, a daughter of Giant's Causeway who became the most expensive filly foal eversold when falling for 1.8m gns to Live Oak Stud in 2002. Another two fillies, Melikah and All Too Beautiful, came close to Classic glory when finishing third and second in the 2000 and 2004 Oaks.

With Galileo since mirroring his own sire Sadler's Wells as champion, appeal for Sea The Stars as a stud prospect is immense. Yet the Hong Kong-based Tsui is content to enjoy the moment and the talent of a horse who presented him with a Derby victory at the young age of 27.

"Words cannot describe how winning the Derby felt," he says. "It was a magnificent win, a performance of sheer class and the fact that the only horses in the past40 years to achieve the Guineas/Derby double were Nijinsky and Nashwan makes it even more special. It was a magical moment for us because Urban Sea's legend is carrying on through Sea The Stars."

The Tsui family's association with Urban Sea stretches back to 1990 when Christopher's father, Hong Kong businessman David, purchased the daughter of Miswaki following her Fr280,000 sale as a yearling at the Deauville August Sale. Sent to Jean Lesbordes, she went on to capture eight races headed by the 1993 Arc, an event which unsurprisingly left a deep impression on the young Tsui.

"I learnt how to ride at Jean Lesbordes' yard during the weekends and I first met Urban Sea in her boxwhich had formerly been All Along's. As my mother preferred to work behind the scenes, I was the one who attended all the races," he says.

"I grew up with Urban Sea and it was unbelievable to own her. She was very quiet, good tempered, brave and determined to win. My mother considered Urban Sea a goddess; as all the Chinese Emperors used to say ‘when you get a good horse, you get the country.'"

It was Christopher's mother, Mrs Ling Tsui, now adviser to Professor Sun Jia Dong, Minister of China Aerospatiale, who was the driving force behind Urban Sea's stud career. At that time, the family owned a broodmare band of 40, mostly in France, but the decision was taken to send Urban Sea to Irelandas Mrs Tsui "believed so much in her and wanted to cover her by the best Irish stallions."

Under the guidance of the late Brian Grassick, the Tsuis were encouraged to sell their lesser mares, and by the time of Urban Sea's death, had reduced their numbers to a manageable five. Among the current band are Sassenach and Epping, the dams of Grade 3 winner Dress Rehearsal and St Leger runner-up The Last Drop, both of whom are by Galileo.

"Quality is the motto of breeding and Brian encouraged me to sell all my middle quality mares and to buy a few nice fillies from Ireland," says Mrs Tsui, who is currently advised among others by Irish National Stud chief executive John Clarke and the stud's stallion nominations manager Julie Lynch.

When able, Mrs Tsui aims to use stallions containing the blood of Allegretta, such as King's Best as well as Galileo. Otherwise, final decisions are made by using her "feelings and eyes and the physical compatibility rather than statistics and papers."

Urban Sea spent eight years at the Irish National Stud, during which time the Tsuis were kept up to date with her movements via regular emails from Clarke, which proved invaluable as Mrs Tsui explains:

"I think for someone who lives in Hong Kong it is impossible to breed horses in Ireland without someone like John or Brian Grassick. Brian was a tremendous help to my family."

According to Tsui, plenty of discussion took place regarding Urban Sea's mating to Sea The Star's sire Cape Cross, who was then standing his first season at €50,000 following a first crop of three-year-olds which included 2004 Oaks winner Ouija Board.

"Michael Youngs had advised my mother to cover Urban Sea with Montjeu but she had fallen in love with Ouija Board and wished to have a filly by Cape Cross out of the mare.

"My mother had reviewed the races of Cape Cross and believed he had a lovely change of gear and a lot of speed. John told her that the chance to get a filly was fifty-fifty while Brian warned her that Cape Cross was a miler and that my mother may not get a Derby horse by him.

"However, I remember my mother told me that Urban Sea could win from 1m to 1m4f on soft ground and good ground, and that she had even been once engaged in the Melbourne Cup. So she was sure that the resulting produce would have the stamina of his mother and the speed of his father. The result was Sea The Stars."

Lynch remembers Sea The Stars well as a foal, saying: "He was a smashing foal, all quality with great size, scope and strength. Urban Sea was huge in the third trimester of her pregnancy and no wonder as he weighed in at 142 lbs, well over 20lbs more than your average foal.

"Everybody was devastated at her death earlier this yer. Urban Sea was a living legend and we are proud to have been associated with her."

Naturally, the Tsuis received plenty of interest in the colt, but with Urban Sea nearing 20-years-old, they resisted all offers. Thus the colt became the first of the mare's progeny to carry the family's silks since her first foal, the Group 3 winner Urban Ocean.

The family has only one other horse in training - a two-year-old brother to The Last Drop named Nebula Storm with Jeremy Noseda - but they hope that their racecourse presence will increase following Tsui's entry into the family business of hotels and real estate after receiving a MBA from the Cass Business School in London. He also owns a PGA golf tour player qualification.

"In the past, we bought some yearlings to be trained by John Oxx and Michael Grassick and only kept the best ones one for breeding," says Mrs Tsui. "But now with Christopher's return, we will certainly extend our breeding operation."

Tsui continues: "My mother is extremely busy and because of the time difference between Hong Kong and Ireland she must wake up at 4am to speak to John Clarke or Mr. Oxx. If I can take over part of her job, she will be more than happy to increase our breeding operation to support Sea The Stars."

Speculation is rife as to where Sea The Stars will retire to stud but for now, the Tsuis remain focused on his racing career; whether that includes a four-year-old season will be discussed at a later date.

"We will take it one day at a time and won't plan that far ahead yet," says Tsui. "He won the Beresford Stakes as a two-year-old and is now unbeaten at three - a huge achievement. He is truly exceptional.

"Urban Sea's racing career brought our family joy, and although my mother had no experience in the breeding business, she believed that Urban Sea could be the best mare in the world. She was right."

Well I am in South Australia, not in any league of top horses, I have a theory which I follow to breed older bloodlines to old bloodlines. I have recently lost a superb Stallion whom I bred, he was poisoned by ??? he died, his name was RED GALLEON by Semitime,by Semipalatinsk, he was out of my deceased Mare,REDLUA who was by Rough n Tumble by Better Boy. I am fortunate in having his only Daughter out of Miss Cameo-by Double Century, this was her last foal, she is gone to the home in the skies. I also have a filly by Centre Stalls out of my Mare who is TATTENHAM RED by Segov ian Rhytmn b y Tattenham, the filly is also a chestnut like her Dam. Has anybody heard of EAGLING he is never mentioned he was by Nureyev, I have a Colt out of my Mare OCTICKLE who is by Eagling, the colt is by my own Stallion TARQUIN SILk a steel grey by Steady Eddy who is by Go Dancer, must be the only entire grandson of Eagling. Both are rising 2 yrs old the filly & colt.
Hope I can make something of them they appear to have nice movement and are correct in conformation. Has anybody on line a yearling by Centre Stalls?

Urban Sea: produced Group 1 winner Galileo and Sea The Stars

Urban Sea breeder Henochsberg dies at 69

 BY BLOODSTOCK WORLD STAFF3:30PM 16 JAN 2016

MICHEL HENOCHSBERG, who bred outstanding racehorse and broodmare Urban Sea under the Marystead Farm banner, died on Friday at the age of 69 after suffering from cancer.

A former vice-president of France Galop, Henochsberg bought Urban Sea's dam, the Lombard mare Allegretta, for $55,000 at Keeneland November in 1984 with Maurice Legasse and Marc de Chambure.

From Allegretta they bred Allez Le Trois, the dam of Prix du Jockey Club winner Anabaa Blue, and 2,000 Guineas winner and Group 1 sire King's Best.

Allegratta left an indelible mark on the breed by producing Urban Sea, a daughter of Miswaki who was a surprise winner of the 1993 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe over White Muzzle and Opera House.

Urban Sea went on to become one of the most important broodmares of all time, producing Group 1 winners Galileo, Sea The Stars, My Typhoon and Black Sam Bellamy among nine black-type performers.

Galileo is widely regarded as the best stallion in the world, while Sea The Stars has produced Group 1 winners from his early crops. Their half-brother Born To Sea has his first two-year-olds run this year.

Henochsberg also bred with Rene Romanet the first Group 1 winner to be trained by Andre Fabre in the shape of Al Nasr, who landed the Prix d'Ispahan in 1982.

Professor of economics at the University of Paris, he was the first president of the Syndicat des Eleveurs from 1989 to 1996 and Jean-Luc Lagardere appointed Henochsberg the vice-president of France Galop in 1995.

Speaking to Jour de Galop, France Galop president Edouard de Rothschild said: "Michel was above all a friend. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of racing.

"Tonight, with him in mind, I want to recall the memory of the many winners with which he was associated - Al Nasr, Urban Sea, Sandman and King's Best."

Henochsberg is survived by his wife, Geraldine, and his three children, Rachel, Simon and Milena.

Hello,
the sad Event of the death of Urban Seas breeder Mr. Henochsberg, was an Intention to look again at her Family members.

Allegretta had a FS named Alya, her Race course performence weren't at the same level as her famed sister, but she ran placed at Group Status. Urban Sea descent Tertullian stands at the Erftmühle Stud, and so far I know he was Champion Sire in Germany. He is the Sire of Irian/Illo, Mawingo (from La Trioenne Family) Giuliani, etc..
Alya is ancestress of Aiyana, who inturn is the dam of Adlerflug and the new Sire Arrigo (stands at the Graditz Stud), will cover his first book of Mares in 2016.
Vaguely I remembered a Thoroughbred carrying both FS's,  with a bit research I found it. It's a Filly, now 4 year old named Attitude, 3 x 3 Allegretta/Alya. Like many inbred fillies, she isn't a great racehorse.

Best regards from Germany, Ticino

A mare that literally rewrote the record books.  She would of made a name as just being a great racemare and having Galileo as a son but she delivered so much more.
