    Posted: 29 Sep 2009 at 12:51am

"Get to know" has now gone International!!!!  This week I have been fortunate enough to get in contact with a top jockey flying the flag for Australia over in Hong Kong....ZAC PURTON.  This could very well be the season that sees Zac win the Hong Kong Jockeys Premiership after finishing 3rd the previous season behind Douglas Whyte and Brett Prebble. I am sure everyone at the Thoroughbred Village wishes him great success for this season and many more to come.

This is what Zac had to say:-

Q. Where were you born, where did you grow up and where do you live now?
Born in Lismore but lived in Casino until I was 7. I've been around a bit. From there we moved to Mount Gambier for 12 months, then Motueka in NZ for 5 years before another 12 month stint in Mount Gambier. From there we moved to Coffs which is where I started my apprenticeship. Now based in HK.

Q. You started your career with Trevor Hardy in Coffs Harbour. How much of an influence was he on you in your younger years?
When I walked into the stables I knew nothing, he taught me everything in the early days.

Q. You moved to Brisbane and won the 2002/3 Premiership when you were still an apprentice. Did you expect to do so well in such a short time?
At the time I was flying and thought anything was possible.

Q. What advice would you give to a 12 year old version of yourself?
Remain humble !!!

Q. How hard a decision was it to move from Brisbane where you were doing so well, to uproot and move to the cut throat scene of Sydney?
Not hard, I always had the confidence and thought if I was to be a better rider it was something I had to do.

Q. Gai Waterhouse gave you a good go while you were in Sydney (33 wins). How was it to ride for such a big stable, and what did you learn during your time in Sydney?
It's always good riding for the big stables, there's so much that can be learnt from how they run and operate. I learnt to be more professional and appreciate the opportunitie's more.

Q. You rode your first Group 1 winner in the 2006 Sires Produce Stakes aboard Excites for Guy Walters. How did you rate your chances going into the race, was it all pure nerves, and what was the feeling like after you crossed the wining post?
Going into the race we thought he could run well but we were pretty relaxed about it. After the race it was feeling of releif knowing the job was done.

Q. You have ridden some great horses in your time such as Eremien, Theseo, Collate, Oomph, Strada. Which horse/s do you have a soft spot for and why?
Early in my career when I was still at Coffs my boss had a horse called Elite Ted, he was only a 2yr old at the time and I was still learning to ride but he was bomb proof. He was my favourite stable horse for years. In the last 12 months when I was in Syd there was a grey mare called Coolroom Canditate, she was the best ride in a race and gave 110% every time I rode her. She was always a pleasure to ride.

Q. You moved to Hong Kong a little over 2 years ago to ride against the best jockeys in the world on a regular basis. How steep a learning curve has it been compaired to riding in Australia?
I've learnt more here in 2 years than I would've learnt in 10 years back there. I've learnt to appreciate the game more and how to deal with people better. Here we're a 1 man band, there's no fall guy if things aren't going well. We're a bigger part of the complete package and get much more satisfaction out of each and every winner. Being involved in everything from the time a horse gets here makes getting a win out of them more satisfying.

Q. Which horse should we be keeping a close eye on in Hong Kong this season and why?
A nice progressive horse i'm on at the moment is Amigo. If he keeps going the right way and learns to switch off a bit better he'll be running in the main 4yr old races leading up to the Derby.

Q. What has been the hardest thing to get used to about life in Hong Kong?
Only the language barrier, it was difficult to start with but once I knew my way around there wasn't a problem.

Q. What do you do in your down time in HK?
Do you socialise much with the other Aussies? When I've got the spare time I like to relax at home or play golf. The Aussies socalise a bit but we're all so busy it's not like back home.

Q. Do you have to pinch yourself sometimes to think that in 10 years you have gone from Coffs Harbour to Hong Kong and achieved so much in such a short space of time?
All the time. I never thought when I first started that one day I would be here. I've been very lucky so far.

Now time for a few quick questions:- (quick answers)

Douglas Whyte- To good
Who's your sporting Hero- Got to many, there's one in every field
Caspar Fownes- Always a clown
Magic Zap- happy days
In 20 years time I will be- haven't thought about it
What you'd do with your last $100- buy a beer and a steak
Fav holiday destination- anywhere near a beach
What makes you laugh the most- alcohol
Funniest jockey- Oliviar Doleuze
Female pin-up- all of them

Cheers Zac!!!!!

Great interview Mick and Zac, I definitely think that Zac has probably given one of the best interviews yet. He actually gives answers with substance, not just one liners!! Congrats boys.

The CIA have asked if you could do an interview with Osama Bin L.
It seems you have a knack for finding people in far flung places, so what the hey.....
Zac appears to be a genuine nice guy!  Sure he wouldnt give an inch on the track ,but angry young man he aint.
Great interview Kanga, and thanks to ZP too. Its good to see .......

Big Congratulations to Zac in his marriage to Nicole.

For those that don't know, Zac now has a new father in law an it is Jimmy Cassidy.

I sent him the following message this morning:-

It's been three years since I interviewed you for our horse racing web site in Australia. One of the goals you had was to win the HK jockey title.
You are almost there now! Well done mate. And big congratulations on the wedding. The Pumper as a father in law, life will be a good laugh!
Mick

And his response was:-

Time flies when your getting old.
I'm still in persuit of that premiership but it's hard going up against someone that has the support of Size, if they ever fell out it would be open slather.
Thanks for your wishes, it was a great day and Jimmy gave a great speech
